The opposite of dreading the school fashion parade: dreading the school fleece brigade!

My little girl has just started nursery and I thought it would be nice to get to know some other mums.

I wear fashionable clothes! And because of this, the only mums who talk to me are those very few others who also wear the same kind of clothes. The majority wear bootcut jeans and fleeces. Now I have nothing against fleeces and jeans, and when the weather is rubbish you will find me in the same things!

Does anyone else have this? Honastly, I wore my rain hat the other day and I swear a few of the mums sneered at me. Should I just have turned up with sopping wet hair?!!

I am totally considereding addapting a fleecy look just to get to know some other mums I have tried smiling and saying hello, but no response.

I like the rainhat.

I like to wear interesting flattering clothes but as I have to be able to run, bend over a lot, wipe a lot of bottoms, breastfeed and absorb various stains in my clothes there is a limit to how many long bell sleeved casmere dresses and silk blouses I am prepared to ruin! .

So for the day to day maintenence of three small children a top and jeans (bootleg/wide leg/ flared) is difficult to beat!

Jewelsandgems · 04/09/2009 14:26

I am with you there bigmouth! jeans are my absolute staple! As are floral tops/dresses what hide any lunch food stains!

Actually I am wearing lots of leggings too lately, faster to dry than jeans and comfier for constant sitting on floor playing with the girls.

Jeans are great. It's when people wear them too tight, too short with an ill fitting Mickey Mouse T Shirt that reveals their muffin top I don't like.

I can honestly say that unless someone looks absolutely fantastic, I don't notice what they are wearing. I can't believe that people refuse to speak to other mums because the are over/underdressed. I say hello and occasionally may enter into small talk but I'm not there to make friends so perhaps I may be seen as standoffish by some.

Jewelsandgems · 04/09/2009 14:33

Oooh yes HF not a good look.

May be guilty of wearing them too tight though when mine are freshly washed they look a bit tight at first, til I've been sat on the floor for bloody hours then they are ok again.

I think it's a bit of a tired argument that those who invest a bit of time & care in their appearance do so because they are insecure.

We all like clothes fgs. And it doesn't need to be expensive if you know what suits you.

I think that most people who suggest that you have to be insecure to give a toss about what you are wearing are actually projecting, they are the insecure ones.

Jewelsandgems · 04/09/2009 14:36

Well said bodenista!

I just don't 'get' people who moan about their appearance - and don't do anything about it. Exercise, join WeightWatchers, have a home beauty treatment. There are so many cheap - and free - things you can do to look better.

Or people who dress about 10 years older than they really are.

thedollshouse · 04/09/2009 14:39

I'm with UQD. I swear I should have been born a man, cause quite frankly this thread is just plain silly.

kittywise · 04/09/2009 14:41

Nice try couch psych bondenista,

Bodenista · 04/09/2009 14:47

But seriously, the OP sounds lovely.

If people are genuinely avoiding her because of the way she likes to dress then that's says more about them than her IMO

cherryblossoms · 04/09/2009 14:51

Agree with Bodenista - on both points.

OrmIrian · 04/09/2009 14:55

But bodenista I think that is the point! I very much doubt they are avoiding her, and certainly not for the reason she suspects. We are always reading threads on here about how cliquey the school run is. And I very much doubt it's ever about what clothing

KristinaM · 04/09/2009 14:57

i believe that the concertina-type rain hats are called rain mates or rain bonnets . here is the queen looking rather fetching in one

if its good enough for her...

Bodenista · 04/09/2009 14:59

Perhaps Ormirian,

but how do you know for sure that that isn't the reason

Quite possibly you would never judge someone on their appearance

Doesn't mean other people don't/won't!

OrmIrian · 04/09/2009 15:01

I don't know for sure but I suspect it. IME it is rare people are truly that petty. I hope I am right and that jewels gets to meet some nice ones soon.

Bodenista · 04/09/2009 15:06

Actually, I hope you are right too Ormirian.

The alternative is too depressing!

Katisha · 04/09/2009 15:10

It's not the clothes themselves though is it? It's the impression the style of clothing gives, in the eyes of the beholder.
Who then makes assumptions about whether that person is someone they can get on with. It's shorthand.
It's not great.
But surely it's why people going for job interviews are told that first impressions are vital. The clothes give off all sorts of signals, whether intended or not.

Peabody · 04/09/2009 15:14

Any clothes I don in the morning will be covered in banana and vomit five minutes later. This is one of the many reasons why you won't see me prancing around in Boden tea dresses. There will be time for that when the kids have mastered the art of eating.

TheDMshouldbeRivened · 04/09/2009 16:22

'We all like clothes fgs. And it doesn't need to be expensive if you know what suits you.'

Dont be daft. Some of us have no interest in clothes at all (and evena £3 t-shirt is too much if you have no money)
But then no-one can see my scrufffy jeans and T because i have an abaya over the top. Or comment on my wild scarecrow hair cos I have a headscarf.
But when its cold I wear a fleece over the top of the lot. bwahahahahahahahah

You can't own a child like dd and ever dress nicely even at home. Sick, wee and manual handling.

TheDMshouldbeRivened · 04/09/2009 16:24

in dd's Bode nw earing school poeple are too busy judging the only muslim in the school and wondering how oppressed I am to judge any fleece I might put on

OrmIrian · 04/09/2009 16:26

I must be very dim riven but I didn't know you were Muslim

bodenites · 04/09/2009 16:28

thats quite a racist remark imo you cant know what the whole school is thinking
