Has there been a thread yet on what you're wearing to work in the heat?

I have such trouble when it gets hot. Have been looking for dresses but find the shops are full of sleeveless linen numbers which are not my thing - I always look like a bag lady in anything linen.

So......inspire me. What are you wearing to work today?

I am wearing shorts - tailored knee length white ones, with a blazer and a stripy top (honestly it sounds better than it is!).

I wear linen dresses a lot, somehow (god knows how) I don't look too creased.

I have put all my suits in the wardrobe for the time being, sod wearing grey and black in this heat!

GetOrfMoiLand · 29/06/2009 16:25

Durr - I mean it looks better than it sounds.

pollycazalet · 29/06/2009 16:27

Getorf - are you working at butlins

Oh can't help then cause I'm planning to wear linen trousers tomorrow. But then I teach, so am expected to look like a bag lady!

What about a wrap dress? I always find them cool. I have two those both from last season; one from Jigsaw the other Oasis.

doggiesayswoof · 29/06/2009 16:30

arf at "sounds better than it is"

I am useless at this.

Wearing black wide leg trousers, black short-sleeved shirt and - yes - black flats today

tomorrow will be similar.

I have some nice dresses for work but usually wear them with opaques and hate going tightless - don't mind bare legs at the weekend but it makes me feel naked in the office.

There are quite a few knee-length A line skirts about in my office today, in various prints, with plain fitted t-shirts.

myredcardigan · 29/06/2009 16:31

Dh wants one of those tailored shorts that are part of a suit combo. We saw a few blokes wearing them in Brighton the other week. Am trying to explain why that was!

janeite · 29/06/2009 16:51

I HATE dressing for work when it's hot. Today I wore grey wide-legged trousers, a cotton scoop necked short sleeved blouse and ballet flats. I was okay in my classroom with the fan on but the train ride home was very warm indeed.

I really struggle because I think skirts and bare legs look a bit unprofessional, linen trousers crumple and don't suit me anyway and I don't wear long skirts as I'm only 5'2, so I end up in trousers, or in a skirt with skin-coloured tights. Either way, I tend to be very warm.

lumpsdumps · 29/06/2009 16:53

I'm struggling in work as we also have to have the heating on as I work in an old peoples home, so not only am I contending with the heat outside but even more inside! Could do with some ideas, today I've been wearing a shirt dress which is very thin material

InTheseShoes · 29/06/2009 17:36

I'm a teacher and I wore a calf length khaki A line linen skirt (a most bargaineous £5 in Primark sale yesterday) and a black scoop necked short sleeved t shirt with strappy black cork wedges. I was quite cool and felt like I looked okay. I think I'll be linen trousers and coloured similar t shirt tomorrow. I do go bare legged but I use Garnier self tan moisturiser to take the edge off. I could not possibly wear tights in this heat!

IkeaSnake · 29/06/2009 17:38

tailored white shorts and a t shirt.

MrsBadger · 29/06/2009 17:55

the Primark polka-dot shirtdress from 2005

bloody marvellous for £10

lumpsdumps · 29/06/2009 18:40

Hello Mrs Badger, haven't seen you around here for awhile

fishie · 29/06/2009 18:45

dark denim skirt and grey flowery cap sleeved top

MrsBadger · 29/06/2009 18:47

work have cracked down and the home laptop is bust...

littlegreen · 29/06/2009 19:40

Teach in a primary school where at least half the female staff are wearing strappy camisoles and 3/4 length trousers with flip flops! Call me old fashioned and a prude but excessive amounts of flesh and mammaries is not profesional. Myredcardigan and janeite, what do the staff wear in your schools during this heatwave?

littlegreen · 29/06/2009 19:42

professional, sorry. should preview!

janeite · 29/06/2009 19:45

Today most of the women were in rather crumpled looking linen trousers and cotton kaftan things. I must admit I like to be smarter than that. Having said that the head was wearing a sleeveless summer dress and sandals.

Tomorrow I need to look really smart as we have an 'event' - how can I do this without collapsing do you think?

I just sweat it out in shift dresses, nude coloured tights and ballet flats.

janeite · 29/06/2009 19:52

I saw that Sprogger. I do wear shorts to work sometimes but they are city shorts (ie just above the knee) and I wear them with tights and a fitted top. Then again when I was much younger and much slimmer I had a lovely shorts suit with a fitted short sleeved jacket - I thought it was quite Chanel at the time!

littlegreen · 29/06/2009 19:53

Janeite, poor you . . . loose clothing to let the air flow as much as possible. Especially the inner thighs, if like me, yours make contact when you stand with your feet together.

FrayedKnot · 29/06/2009 20:01

I wore white linen trousers (unlined) and an olive green top from Red herring

Then got AF halfway throught the monring...oh joy!

Must remember to check diary next month

And sorry that was not helpful, was it?

I'll probably get had up now by MN style plice for the white trousers too.

myredcardigan · 29/06/2009 20:37

Littlegreen, I'm wearing linen trousers and modest t-shirt. Tomorrow I'll wear an ankle length white linen skirt and a long aqua top from next.
My mammaries are too well used for show.

spicemonster · 29/06/2009 21:26

Today I wore black linen trousers and a cream linen shirt and ballet flats. Last week I wore a linen skirt and a voile shirt one day and some very fine suit trousers (unlined) and a different linen shirt. I have a pair of cream linen trousers too that I shall put into service.

My problem is shoes. I wear ballet flats because all my girly summer heels are not very work appropriate.

It's horrendous isn't it - I start the day looking like a damp rag

I'm working from home tomorrow, Wednesday and Friday I've decided - it's just too hot to fight with the twats tourists that are overrunning the tube.

janeite · 29/06/2009 21:37

Can't do white or cream - would end up covered in board marker by 9.30!

I have a pair of very light work-style trousers in pale grey but I am too fat for them.
