Just had my skin ripped off during eyebrow wax. WWYD. Pic on profile

I went to get my brows waxed this morning.

It stung a bit, but it always does.

I looked in the mirror and said it was fine. It was red and swollen, but it always is after waxing.

When I got home, it was still stinging so I looked in the mirror to find that my skin has been ripped off. Pic on my profile.

I am torn between going there and making a fuss, but not wanting the lassie to get into trouble.

But then, she's arsed up my eyebrows big time. Just as well I wasn't getting them done for some big occasions.

What do you think I should do? It's just a wee local salon, so if I kick up a stink then I can't ever go back....

I've put a better pic on profile now too.

Can't believe the pics mb
Hope you get some result from the manager....

Lovemyshoes · 04/06/2009 21:40

Mawbroom, I cannot believe she did nothing more when you said you didn't know what skin type you were, they should have laid you down on the couch and done a full check for contra-indications as to whether they are able to treat you and also they would have been able to advise you of which of the four main skin types you are, this definately sounds like shoddy workmanship

Lovemyshoes · 04/06/2009 21:43

I've looked at the second picture and I cannot for the life of me understand why on earth the wax was put that low, it was definatey far too low to be effective as you have very few, if any hairs there.

It goes without saying that you shouldn't use any makeup or perfumed products until it has healed as this may cause irritation, though I think if you needed to deep cleanse the 'oil cleaning method' that the ladies have recommended on here would be ok without the added oils etc.

Lovemyshoes · 04/06/2009 21:45

P.s. Without seeing you personally and looking at the photo, I would say you have combination skin

mawbroon · 04/06/2009 22:03

No need to worry about using make up or perfumed products Lovemyshoes!

I wear make up once a year or so, and my face just gets a sploosh with water in the shower.

how can you tell I have combination skin?

mawbroon, that looks most unpleasant! to hear of the lack of customer service though, she should have apologised at the very least.
It does seem a bit low down though, so either you are Hairy McHairy and have to have an inch of hair taken off, or she missed with the wax and has actually burnt your eyelid. Which is what it looks like to me - that you have a wax burn. But I could be wrong. Good that you have the photos - even if it fades, you still have evidence to show the manager.

Has someone mentioned using aloe vera gel? That might help to take the burn off.

Lovemyshoes · 04/06/2009 22:11

Purely from what I can see.

It looks like you MIGHT be a little oily on the forehead and and the side of the noise, but, I could be completely wrong, you may have been sweating or you may have just moisturised which would add a sheen.

rookiemater · 04/06/2009 22:12

Heelo mb, hope your eyebrows are recovering well. I can recommend two local home beauticians, double the number due to my hormone induced extra hairyness.

one of which is my CM who doubles up as a beauty therapist after hours, oh and then after that goes out salsa dancing until the wee hours, both very reasonable as work from home.

Was it that dodgy looking salon at the end of the road beside the chinese takeaway ?

They should at least have refunded your money.

mawbroon · 04/06/2009 22:13

LOL at Hairy McHairy.

I did ask the girl why the wax was so low down when I didn't have any hair growing there. She said, that's what you do with waxing, and no, there was nothing wrong with her technique because look, I've just done my own and they are fine.....

Lovemyshoes · 04/06/2009 22:14

Even when I do facials for friends etc I ALWAYS do a diagnostic, there may be less or more contraindications than before due to illness/medication or even a silly thing. Changing from wearing spectacles to wearing contact lenses is a contra-indication

mawbroon · 04/06/2009 22:14

Yes, rookie. That's the one. I have been there loads of times before and it's been just fine, but it was a different girl who did it before.

I am not sure that I will do waxing again tbh. I like the sound of threading that was mentioned earlier.

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 04/06/2009 22:18

ha. so obviously she gets it 100% right EVERY time then, doesn't take extra care with her own or anything, oh no.

I think she has put too much wax on for sure, and even if it hasn't burnt you as such, it's just much more sensitive skin lower onto the eyelid; so either it has burnt you or just done more damage because it's more delicate skin.

FWIW, it doesn't actually look as though the skin is ripped off...

And I'm not a beautician but I'm prreeetty sure you're not supposed to put the wax that low down...

mawbroon · 04/06/2009 22:20

The top layer of skin is definitely missing thumbwitch.

I guess the question is was it burned off, or stripped off, but it's not really that relevant.

She fucked up either way!

jojosmaman · 04/06/2009 22:28

Ooh that looks sore, I'd b seriously pissed off! I had mine tweezered just this eve and the girl caught me with the tweezer but was very apologetic so I didn't bother complaning even though I have a little red mark on my brow and a wedding on saturday. Sometimes a little sorry goes a long way!

Also, the salon I go to doesn't do waxing on the face as they said eventually the waxing softens/ loosens the skin and causes wrinkles/ lines over time in this delicate area. Better to thread or tweeze they say.

Lovemyshoes · 04/06/2009 23:17

To be honest, if you did get burned on that part, why not elsewhere and also on the other eye?

My opinion is that on that eye she spread it far too thick and went far too low down and thus pulled off the top layer of the epidermis, if burned, it may have been more red round the edges etc.

Also, it is a load of bollocks about her waxing her own eyebrows, my friend and I do each others, but NEVER our own, we also dye each others eyebrows and once again NEVER our own, it is far too dangerous.

Hope it isn't too sore and if you need more advice, give me a shout, and, for what it's worth I've heard that threading is excellent, though I have never given it a go myself as no-one practices it where I live, not only does it trim but it also thins out and I've heard you get a far more even look.

Lovemyshoes · 04/06/2009 23:18

She doesn't sound experienced to me, once my friend did it slightly wrong and she left that part of the wax to dry and put something on it before peeling it off and there was NO damage done whatsoever.

pointydog · 04/06/2009 23:25

wow, that looks bad. I'd be livid at their rubbish customer care too. And at the ridiculous, illogical attempts to pacify.

amidaiwish · 05/06/2009 14:14

my sister had a pedicure once and the woman slashed her heel quite badly, blood spurting everywhere but at least she had the decency to be mortified.

i said to my sister "i hope you got it for free at least" my sister said "no and i even gave her a tip as i felt sorry for her"
(my sister is a much nicer person than me...)

warthog · 06/06/2009 07:52

well, have they made good? free threading for a year?

mawbroon · 06/06/2009 09:43

Nope, haven't heard a peep.

I will be writing my letter of complaint today.

Did you hear anything back from them?

foofi · 13/06/2009 10:33

Hope your face has calmed down a bit now mawbroon. It doesn't help much at the moment I know, but can I just say that I've recently had my eyebrows threaded, and it leaves the skin much less red than other types of treatment imo.

K91 · 20/08/2009 10:50

Hello, im a beauty therapist myself.

I know it was a couple of months ago now, but I would advise you to go in and complain, if you havent already. Because who ever owns the salon, will not want a bad name for her business.

Depending on how thick the spatula was that she used, that may have been why the wax was so far down.

Sometimes is not their fault though, I burnt my brothers skin the other day.. and I ALWAYS tests it on my skin and then on my clients, before applying the wax for that treatment. and it wasnt hot! and its not as if the wax pot and been on ages. obviously i said sorry though, and he couldnt understand why because he said ''but the wax wasnt hot.'' thankfully this is the only time its happened. I would be devastated if it happened to a paying client

And as for people saying doing treatments on yourself is dangerous, its not i do everything on myself. obviously when it comes to underarm/bikini waxing i have someone to help me pull the skin, but i do my treatments on myself.

I get a red patch like yours, its always on the same eye everytime, no matter who has done it, but then later on in the day it looks dry and i just moisturise it and exfoliate it off, then its fine i obviously havent had my top layer of skin taken off! thank god!

Hope you've had luck with sorting everything out with the salon.
