Just had my skin ripped off during eyebrow wax. WWYD. Pic on profile

I went to get my brows waxed this morning.

It stung a bit, but it always does.

I looked in the mirror and said it was fine. It was red and swollen, but it always is after waxing.

When I got home, it was still stinging so I looked in the mirror to find that my skin has been ripped off. Pic on my profile.

I am torn between going there and making a fuss, but not wanting the lassie to get into trouble.

But then, she's arsed up my eyebrows big time. Just as well I wasn't getting them done for some big occasions.

What do you think I should do? It's just a wee local salon, so if I kick up a stink then I can't ever go back....

omg that is awful!

I have my eyebrows threaded - would recommend it!

FairMidden · 03/06/2009 20:08

[winces]

[makes mental note to continue ham-fisted - but safe - DIY brow maintenance]

Hope you get an apology, maw.

warthog · 03/06/2009 20:57

i also have my eyebrows threaded. not had a bad experience yet.

have however had bad experiences with waxing - one woman took off half my eyebrow by mistake. was awful! took quite a while to recover, meanwhile, i had the excrutiating pleasure of facing the world...

lilacclaire · 03/06/2009 21:02

This has happened to me, the wax was too hot and I got burnt, looks pretty much the same.

I went back to their small reception area which was full of customers saying very loudly how they had burnt me.

They whisked me through the back quick smart and I got a few free treatments from them (although that was not the goal).

Please keep it covered with sunscreen or stay out the sun if you can, or it could make it worse (thats what my salon told me).

Oh and i've been back loads of times since (no shame me)

mawbroon · 03/06/2009 21:03

I have heard of threading. Only very recently though. It was either Pruners or nailpolish was telling me about it.

I am not too fussed about being seen out and about with a big injury above my eye, but I know that for some women, they woulnd't want to go out looking like this and it could be pretty traumatic for them.

OP posts:
mawbroon · 03/06/2009 21:04

I don't think it's a burn though. The wax didn't feel too hot at all, and maybe you can't see it in the picture, but the top layer of skin has definitely been peeled away.

lilacclaire · 03/06/2009 21:06

cover with sunblock anyway, ouch you poor thing.

pinkmagic1 · 03/06/2009 21:07

I would never use wax on the facial area, threading is the way to go!

Ivykaty44 · 03/06/2009 21:11

I would

Write a small note saying just that you were upset by this event - pop in the photo that is on your profile, ask what they would like to do ? and take it in in the morning.

Make the note really nice,

Dear salon owner,

i really enjoy visiting your salon, toaday though there was an incident that has upset me and I am concerned about this. I would be grateful if you can let me know what we can do about this.

thank you

mrs eyebrow mess

hellymelly · 03/06/2009 21:13

I would put on some of that silicone stuff that helps scars. You get it front the pharmacy,it should stop it scarring anyway. It is expensive but you can bill the salon. It looks terrible! How could she have been so blase?Hope you get a good reaction from the boss.

mawbroon · 03/06/2009 21:38

Do you know what it is called hellymelly? I am thinking about bio oil or something. Is that any good?

OP posts:
Ewe · 03/06/2009 21:40

That is awful. Does look like a burn - could be a chemical burn as opposed to a heat one?

FWIW, my family own beauty salons and had a similar incident (but it was due to wax being too hot) and the customer tried to sue and got about a £500 settlement in the end. Not suggesting you do the same unless you are feeling incredibly traumatised or some such but you should at least get a full refund and a course of treatments that you want for example.

The salon trying to just say it is not them at fault is not good enough.

mawbroon · 03/06/2009 21:47

LOL, the girl said it couldn't be a burn because the other side wasn't burned.

How can I argue with that logic eh?

No, I am not going to sue. I couldn't be arsed tbh.

If you shave your legs and cut one leg it can't be a razor cut as the other leg hasn't got a razor cut? hmm

I think it is more of a case of letting them no this really needs to be addressed as she needs retraining otherwise it could damage next time and someone may lose more than a bit of skin.....

mawbroon · 04/06/2009 10:02

So, the owner has not phoned me back yet.

I went to the doc about my eye, just so that there is a record of it should I decide to take this further.

OP posts:
Penthesileia · 04/06/2009 10:52

If your skin was warm and soft (and thus more likely to come away when in contact with hot wax), then it seems likely that the only other reasonable explanation is that the wax was too hot, and you were burnt.

Did she do that eye first? That would explain why that eye was burnt, and not the other - by the time she did the other, the wax would've cooled a little.

Really and truly they have to acknowledge that the wax was too hot and you were burnt.

for you.

Penthesileia · 04/06/2009 10:52

Sorry, "if your skin was not warm and soft..."

Lovemyshoes · 04/06/2009 11:03

From what I can see here the wax has most definately been put below the eyesocket which should DEFINATELY not have happened,

For it to take a layer of the epidermis off (which it has)it doesn't necessarily mean it has been left on too long, the skin round this area is paper thin and needs to be treated with extra care, the wax should have been put on the eyebrown with something a little wider than an orange stick.

I wouldn't risk anything like bio-oil mainly because of perfumes etc (though this will be excellent when the scab has come away etc, as the oil will stop scarring)

I would recomment that you use Aloe Vera gel and keep a close eye for it weeping or becoming infected

If you get no joy from the manager, get more photos and name and shame in your local paper.

Lovemyshoes · 04/06/2009 11:04

Also, did you have a skin diagnostic beforehand (or have you had one before there) this would determine whether you had extra sensitive skin etc.

ilovesprouts · 04/06/2009 11:09

ooh looks sore hope u get somthing done

warthog · 04/06/2009 13:56

what did doc say?

mawbroon · 04/06/2009 17:27

He didn't say much. I said that I just wanted it noted on my medical records in case I wanted to take it further. He just asked what happened and said that part of the epidermis had been stripped off (which the lassie denied) and not to put anything on it so it could heal.

I have had no response from the owner, but will now put it in writing to him giving 14 days for a response.

OP posts:
mawbroon · 04/06/2009 17:29

Lovemyshoes, no skin consultation done beforehand. She asked me to fill in a form which asked for doctors details, any surgery, illnesses and the like. When it came to the bit about skin type, I said that I had left it blank because I didn't really know what my skin type was. She said that was fine and then didn't ask anything else. In fact, she didn't even look at the form before shoving it away in the drawer...

ilovemydogandmrobama · 04/06/2009 17:38

I had an eyebrow waxed off once

But it was a trainee and the owner was very very apologetic. Got leg waxing for free for a very long time.

the annoying thing is that they are digging themselves into a hole. If they apologized immediately and took some responsibility for it, you probably wouldn't feel the need to make the matter further.

You should contact Environmental health as salons have to comply with strict regulations.

mawbroon · 04/06/2009 17:47

That's exactly it. If she had apologised and just been a bit more customer focussed then that would have been it.

I am beginning to feel more annoyed about the lack of customer service than the actual injury!
