Why oh why have I been going to M&S for bras for all these years??????

Because they are shite!!!!!!

I went today for maternity bras, i was measured after waiting 30 minutes and woman said I was 32D, that didnt fit, then she tried a 34dd, no good, then she decided I might be an E cup but said she didnt have any maternity in an E cup!

So I trotted off to Bravissimo, had never been before and wasnt swayed by useless marketing twaddle on the wall about how women have never felt so good shopping for underwear blah blah.

No measuring, she looked at my boobs, told me I was wearing the wrong size pre-pregnancy (also measured by M&S), she came in with a bra, put it on, told me to bend over and jiggle my boobs and stood up ...HEP PRESTO the most perfect fitted bra Ive ever worn in my life.
Yes it was more expesive, but my boobs look good and Im comfortable.
I will go back after pregnancy and kit myself out with proper fitting bras.

I left being part of the marketing twaddle highly recommended

To be fair, I think M&S might be cottoning onto the fact that a LOT of people aren't happy with their fitting service.

I've been disappointed and put-off by the manner and accuracy of M&S staff several times in the past.

However, last time I went, I had a lovely assistant who measured me by eye only and brought me a well-fitting bra.

Joggler · 24/05/2009 23:19

M and S bras just arent supprotive enough and their SPORTS bras for anything over a c

they havepretty little tiny ones

or DOREEN style ones

none that are nice for dd plus - straps are shite too

bronze · 24/05/2009 23:23

mothercare are also crap

wish we had soemwhere better here. Seems the best person at measuring in these parts is my dh

MuffinToptheMule · 24/05/2009 23:25

Another vote for Bravissimo. I went to La Senza and they measured me as a 42B. The girl brought me a bra in that size but it just kept falling off.
Then I went to M&S and I was measured as a 38B. Norks seriously were not fitting in the cups.
Finally I went to Bravissimo and got measured as a 30FF. My bra now fits wonderfully.

lucykate · 24/05/2009 23:38

i am a recent convert to buying more expensive bras. after years of wearing ones bought from george at asda, which never stayed in place, and were really uncomfortable, i now have bras that fit, and it doesn't feel like i'm wearing it at all it's so comfy. no bravissimo near me but i did go to a local proper underwear shop.

I agree

I only wear Freya

AitchTwoOh · 25/05/2009 01:02

me too with freya.

thumbwitch · 25/05/2009 01:02

M&S measuring service is indeed shite.
I have never quite fit into the "correct" sizes for my measurements - for ages I wore a 34B because that was the closest approximation, although I came to the conclusion that in reality I was a 35AB, a really common size, obviously.

Anyway, went to M&S and they measured me as a 36AA and then sent me to try one on - HA! Like trying to cover my assets with a posh sandwich (triangle, no crusts) - and the chest band wasn't even touching at the front! Rubbish.

When I give up bf'ing I will try bravissimo. Am now sort of a 38C but still not happy with the fit.

Technofairy · 25/05/2009 01:13

Bravissimo are ace! M&S measured me as 36DD and I spent far too long wearing ill fitting bras. Went into Bravissimo on the spur of the moment and discovered I'm actually 32GG. As the OP says, she just looked at me and came back with the right size. Talk about a revelation! I'm a new woman they are under control, well presented and I can now wear a size 12 top instead of a 14.

thumbwitch · 25/05/2009 01:20

I am at the difference in some of your sizes here! Really

tribpot · 25/05/2009 06:00

Yup, another vote here for Bravissimo.

Although I wonder, how do they train their fitters? Do they have to look at endless pictures of boobs? Or do they have some cunning multiplier that says "woman in M&S bra, deduct two from back size, add two to cup size"?

elliepac · 25/05/2009 06:06

Bravissimo = great boobs

howtotellmum · 25/05/2009 09:46

well, sorry to disagre, but M&S have saved my cleavage....there uplifting underwired T shirt bra for £12 is great. I have small boobs- 34 B or whatever, depending on style.

I have to say though that their sizes are all over the place- I have a 34A, 34Bs and 2 34Cs from M&S and although my boobs have got lisghtly bigger recently, I cannot rely on what size i think I take- always have to try on.

howtotellmum · 25/05/2009 09:47

sorry- "their" not there- I can spell.

BodenGroupie · 25/05/2009 09:56

Could only afford one £28 bra in Bravissimo but have since found loads of the same style on eBay for around £12. Went from and M & S 36D to a 32F! Does take a while to get used to the tightness across the back, but DD1 was looking at some old photos the other day and pointed out, "these were obviously taken before you got a proper bra!" - they looked like a spaniel's ears.

MrsBonJovi · 25/05/2009 10:02

M&S really need to sort the measuring out. I have been saying for many years they are crap. I now only buy from an independant small retailer who is fab but expensive. £30 a bra (but I am a H/J cup depending on cut and fit) Bravissmo are good too I just wish I had a shop nearby so I could try loads on!

cocolepew · 25/05/2009 10:09

Can't speak for their measuring, (I do it myself), but M & S bras seem to get bigger with each wash

Horton · 25/05/2009 10:23

I went to M&S years ago and they put me in a 34A. The band hung loose all the way around and the cups didn't adequately contain any part of my breasts. I just looked at the fitter and said 'I don't think this can be right, do you?!' and she just sort of shrugged. Needless to say, I didn't buy it. Then went to Rigby and Peller who put me in a 30D which was fabulously comfortable and I bought three in the same style. I'm a bit bigger post-pregnancy, about a 30E, but I've never bothered with M&S fitting again. For those with a small band size who can't afford Bravissimo or R&P, I've found that La Senza in a size 32 comes up quite small around the band, much nearer to a 30. I get a 32DD from there and it's very comfortable. They do also do a 30 band but not in as many styles.

Horton · 25/05/2009 10:24

Oh yes, I meant to say La Senza are currently doing a two bras for £25 offer.

MamaHobgoblin · 25/05/2009 10:27

If you're appalled at M&S's measuring skilz, try Mothercare! You'd think they'd be better at dealing with pregnant or lactating norks, really.

M&S had me in bras that didn't fit properly for years and years. I'm very that I didn't do something about it earlier, but a friend saved me and took me to R&P. Will now check out Bravissimo too. M&S 'fitters' tend to put you in too small a cup size and too large a back size, and I think this might be to do with the measuring tape - the better bra fitters all go by looking at the shape of your boobs and insisting on a very firm fit for the back size.

WhatWouldtheGoatDo · 25/05/2009 10:37

john lewis are good but only if you are 32 or above, they don't stock 30.

KingRolo · 25/05/2009 10:43

Mothercare are also terrible, really. My nursing bra from them is the vilest and most usless thing I have ever bought and it cost £15 so not even cheap.

Their maternity clothes are dreadful too.

Off to Bravissimo the moment I stop bf.

WorrisomeHeart · 25/05/2009 11:34

Leia are good too - not many shops around (one in Bluewater, and in Richmond, not sure where else). But great staff. I went there to get my wedding lingerie and was measured - came up as 36DD as opposed to the 38-40 C that I'd been measured as in M&S! Having said that, now that I know my right size, I have bought M&S bras, just not let them near me with their measuring tape! Think I will have to try out Bravissimo now though, like the look of their swimsuits too - anyone had any experience with their non-lingerie stock?

Horton · 25/05/2009 12:36

Ooh, I've never been in Leia but live in Richmond. I will definitely pay a visit. Are they very expensive?
