I am currently a size 12, probably 10 top half. I have hips, a big bum and big legs but my top half isn't really that big. I need a nice dress (or other outfit) to wear to a hen night and wedding that are coming up soon. I want to look dressed up, and really want something that will make me look slimmer and enhance my shape (skim over larger bottom area and show my waist/top half). Does any one have any ideas for me?

I was thinking that a strapless 50's style dress might look nice? But I have no clue what is the best for my shape really. Probably describe my shape as english pear?!

Aefondkiss im liking that one too, Like the black with the splash of colour, nice pattern. Only down side I think would be the thin straps, making my arms look bigger??

I can't really say if the thin straps would make your arms look bigger, not my area of expertise, though it sounds like you are slim, so it might be a confidence thing? you could always get a shrug?

OK...so I ordered this

this

this-my favourite

What do you all think? Are any of them nice? I wasn't brave enough to go for any colour!!

Oh forgot to say, I ordered them all, but i can only keep one of them, so elp to decide which ones the keeper! As long as it looks good on too.

I like the last one of those, but I find black a bit 'meh'.

Can I tempt you into a bit of colour? One of these in blue or green would look great for hen night and could be covered up with a shrug for the day time bit of the wedding;

Wow, I'm so glad I have Mumsnet!

I can never seem to find all these outfits that everyone else comes up with!

The second one is my favourite...although its black it is lovely!

The last one is also nice and the colours look good! First one is nice and would have suited my pre-baby figure but think it will make my hips look even bigger than they are!

Glad you like number two. It is a bit different I think.

Oli also have some very nice sequinned stuff if you take a look - I am down on black but approve when it is very glam OR sparkly.

oneyummymummy · 16/04/2009 18:35

this is lovely and its NOT black

do you think the layers would only exaggerate my size?

You are only a 10/12, so not big at all.

I think that the pink satin number could be very unflattering (I am a bit scared of satin tbh).

Number two is a triangle shape and I think it will exaggerate the fact that your lower half is bigger than your top. Mind you, if you have strong shoulders it could look great.

Okay, I have a couple more to throw into the ring. I do think that the '50s would work for your shape:

This might be a bit tame for the hen night but I think that it could be very flattering on:
