How to get your hair really soft, shiny and slippery but with lots of body as opposed to a bit like wire wool.

Is this achievable or it it an impossible hair marketing dream?

Am open to any ideas, home remedies or products, be they cheap & cheerful or not too much more expensive.

My hair used to feel soft and silky whenever I left it to dry naturally, but of late it feels 'textured'/sort of rough, unless I straighten it which I don't want to do as it wrecks it! Also I don't want it entirely straight. I have hair with a natural wave which is prone to frizz. I know FrizzEase is popular but I can't seem to get on with it very well, it makes my hair lank and too oily with loads of 'build up'. I just want to be able to leave my hair to do its thing and curl but not 'fuzz up'.

The sort of look I am aiming for is what I call the 'Nigella', which (in her case is no doubt achieved after several hours of styling) looks natural.

at Aveda, is there anything round about the £1.99 budget!?!

Bubble99 · 25/01/2009 23:04

Someone I know swears by the conditioner that comes with home hair-dye kits.

Not that I'd know, of course.

mrsseanbean · 25/01/2009 23:04

Can sometimes get a bargain on ebay

peppered Bubble, Peppered

I used to dye my own hair and now that you've reminded me I DO remember it being lovely and shiney and soft - do you think boots would notice me removing the conditioning pouches from all the hair dye kits!?!

I've found that if i wanted to reduce the number of products I use after washing hair, it has to be ridiculously well conditioned.

After ds3, I used to put conditioner on dry hair at bedtime, once a week, and wash it out the next day. (yes a bit of a passion killer, dh generally away one night a week!)

Can now manage with use of a good conditioner every wash (every other day) left on hair while I shower ( a good ten mins in steaming atmos!)

twinsetandpearls · 25/01/2009 23:09

redken all soft.

I am currently using some shampoo from the aussie range and have lots of compliments on my hair.

twinsetandpearls · 25/01/2009 23:10

I bought lots of aveda when in America also very good, I had one that smelt of peppermint.

weetimorousdizzybeastie · 25/01/2009 23:12

anniemac do you need it so much being on the Radio?!?

aussie range have a good curl tamer leave in thing that makes hair feel lovely and soft too

Tinker · 25/01/2009 23:13

Using a leave-in conditioner helps (a bit) I use and Andrew Collinge one I think. Does make it feel softer. But I've rubbish hair as well. Mine would look like James May's if I did nothing to it.

mrsseanbean · 25/01/2009 23:15

I sometimes used to plait my hair loosely and it would set quite nicely over-night into waves. But it is very thick and sometimes would still be wet in the middle if I'd washed it too late. If I went to bed with damp hair and just just left it loose, I would wake up with it very curly but totally mad, sticking up almost vertically in places, skewed all over to one side and with an horrendous cowlick. No amount of product would get it under control.

Lee Stafford has a treatment that you use between shampoo and conditioner that is very good, will see if I can find it online. Very cheap.

mrsseanbean · 25/01/2009 23:17

Bosch, interesting, but how did you stop it rubbing off your hair overnight? Didn't it make the pillow wet?

OP posts:
weetimorousdizzybeastie · 25/01/2009 23:17

between shampoo and conditioner I'm lucky if I've time for conditioner so would love to have time for all 3

mrsseanbean, if I have mine just below jaw length I can leave it to dry overnight in a sort of shaggy/messy/bed head look thats not too bad but then its not long enough to chuck up in a band when needs must time wise (which is every day) so at the moment its washed, dried very quickly and dragged back in the hope am not looking so deranged that someone phones the social on me

twinsetandpearls · 25/01/2009 23:19

it may be this

or maybe this

ravenAK · 25/01/2009 23:19

Lush 'Veganese' - good on my long, fine but unruly, dyed hair. But a bit heavy for every day. Does leave hair silky & with natural curl.

Bloody amazing on softening dBIL's mental 'a ginger sofa just burst in my face' beard! . That probably isn't an obvious recommendation, but it is a good product (just ask dSIL).

RiaParkinson · 25/01/2009 23:19

bubble those hair dye conditioners are THE BEST

i use aveda and it is rubbish in comparison

Lmccrean · 25/01/2009 23:19

Ive heard tesco pro-v stuff is good. Ive tried loads and only pantene classic care works on my hair and even then i have to wash every day!

Maybe try skipping shampoo every other wash and just use conditioner?

Or what about this ?

twinsetandpearls · 25/01/2009 23:21

I get in the shower shampoo my hair, rinse then put on a treatment ( do this onceor twice a week) leave on while I have a wash, rinse and then condition.

It works better if you leave on in the bath as you get longer.

mrsseanbean · 25/01/2009 23:25

Lmccrean, I like the sound of the conditioner only wash - thanks for the link, will give ythat a try definitely.
