How to get your hair really soft, shiny and slippery but with lots of body as opposed to a bit like wire wool.

Is this achievable or it it an impossible hair marketing dream?

Am open to any ideas, home remedies or products, be they cheap & cheerful or not too much more expensive.

My hair used to feel soft and silky whenever I left it to dry naturally, but of late it feels 'textured'/sort of rough, unless I straighten it which I don't want to do as it wrecks it! Also I don't want it entirely straight. I have hair with a natural wave which is prone to frizz. I know FrizzEase is popular but I can't seem to get on with it very well, it makes my hair lank and too oily with loads of 'build up'. I just want to be able to leave my hair to do its thing and curl but not 'fuzz up'.

The sort of look I am aiming for is what I call the 'Nigella', which (in her case is no doubt achieved after several hours of styling) looks natural.

Please post withbresults - I've recently realised my hair looks like straw when I wash it.

I'm probably not best placed to give advice on this topic as I'm currently going through a "I hate my hair" phase However, I've got similar hair to you and I agree with one of the other posters that a loose plait when damp is a good way of getting a soft wave. Also, a hairdresser with curly hair once taught me that you have to work with the wave/curl not agaist it. Basically, you need to put some product in while damp/wet (she used an Aveda curl creme thing but you can get other cheaper things that do the same job or just use a good frizz taming mousse), then twist sections round and round with your fingers (so they look like rope IYSWIM) and then leave them to dry like that. Then just shake it out (don't brush) and you should have frizz free, soft curls.

I don't generally have the time so just tie it back and straighten the fringe. As I say, I hate my hair!!

I am a recent and fervent convert to the Garnier Fructis anti-frizz serum stuff(comes in a spherical pump pack). It's very cheap so I wasn't expecting great things of it but it's brilliant.

pellmell · 26/01/2009 12:13

hair dye conditioner here too.
Nice and easy sell them seperately in boots

bosch · 26/01/2009 13:19

mrsseanbean - actually, conditioner will set quite hard after half an hour or so! I would put a towel on the pillow as well though.

CountessDracula · 26/01/2009 13:21

You need GHDs

CountessDracula · 26/01/2009 13:22

omg I can't believe no-one else has said it

They totally sort out frizz and you don't have to have it straight

oh have just seen you don't want to straighten it

Have you tried the Frizz Ease serum in the darker bottle

hazeyjane · 26/01/2009 13:26

If you're hair is coloured I would recommend the conditioner that comes with Nice and Easy, you can get it seperately in Boots, to use weekly. My hair always feels really silky after using it, and has no frizz.

PerArduaAdNauseum · 26/01/2009 13:30

Can I recommend the ultra-cheap coconut oil? Doesn't weigh your hair down, gives it a bit of gloss and separation, looks great on curls. You have to use the tiniest amount - about enough to cover 5 pin heads - and spread around your palms then smooth over the hair. I use it as a gloss in the morning.

But avoid pantene and the like - silicon builds up and feels so wrong...

littlerach · 26/01/2009 13:30

You can buy the post hair dye conditioner in some Boots.

HeadFairy · 26/01/2009 13:36

If you can stand it, when you rinse your hair give it a blast of icy cold water. I quite often do a vinegar rinse on my hair too.... half a cup of wine vinegar in a jug of water and pour that over your hair after the last rinse. It makes hair very shiney. Works best on darker hair.

ICUP · 26/01/2009 13:52

to get body in clean hair you mean?
you want the aveda range of hair potionadbundance ( liek a poweder you spray on done hair to make it tousled and second day - ish) and the root lift spray tonic

MissisBoot · 26/01/2009 14:09

You need paul mitchell the detangler It'll leave your hair super soft.

MadameCastafiore · 26/01/2009 14:10

I have long curly hair and it looks dreadful straight! Si I have tried alsorts and what i always go back to is cheap as chips Alberto balsam sun kissed rasperry shampoo and conditioner (although this bottle of conditioner feels a bit different and i wonder if they changed the recipe?) - usually about 99p. My hair is always frizz free after this. It really is the best.

I tried the aussie 5 min conditioner and thats ok but a lot more expensive.

My hair tolerates the frizz ease mousse for a while then frizzes up, so its best in short spurts. Was recomended the wella high hair curl energy by the hairdresser and that is another one good in short bursts.

I have also read another review about that fructis pump cream that someone mentioned but not not tried it.

The best mousse i have ever found is studioline curl power re-curling mousse, and i leave it to dry naturally, but then defuse for the last two mins literally just to pump it up a bit.

When my hair looks nice it is shiny smooth chunky curls, no frizz.
