I love Mad Men and agree - she is gorgeous. I would start with pencil skirts, and fine knitted v necked tops. Always wear heels and lipstick!

I try to go for this sort of look and am waiting for my first dress from Style Shake as I simply couldn't find anything in the shops. Meanwhile, a broad elastic belt helps with the cinched in waist look.

i think you need to start with a girdle of some sort

schprooz · 23/01/2009 09:29

RachePache · 23/01/2009 09:51

Comma me too. Don't know about DH but I've a big girlie crush on her.

Comma · 23/01/2009 09:52

God i love em all, and i think lisa Armstrong( the times fashion editor) is a secret fan too. She mentions them often. I think Obama woudl be a great casting in that show - all slick hair, thin ties and chiselled jawlines.

I'm going to watch this thread for ideas. Before I would always hunt out these clothes no matter what else was going on in fashion as some now it suits me. Even my Gran and Mum used to find stuff in charity shops for me as everyone knew in my family that it suits me. Look out for twin sets, shoulder length hair in a french plait, Capri pants shirt and more shirts tucked in with a wide belt on the waist, cardigans over the top. I have gone totally to pot since DS and the clothes are waiting in the loft for me to lose weight.

Comma · 23/01/2009 10:01

make up matt too with orange lipstick( shudder) for leeshure, or red fo vampability

Comma · 23/01/2009 10:13

Right do we want the Joan look rathe thant he betty?
I think the key is all sillouette to show off tthat figure.- you need suport undies, conical breasts (madonna was so past her time) and smooth unfussy lines in strong colours.

A cap sleeved sheath or straight dress is good like this from dull old next - below the knee though note and one like this for evening here and courts to go with it like these( no platform) but not in white obv
Joan often has a brooch too - very of the era, maybe given to her for services rendered...
A tiny clutch bag for her cigarettes and you are ready for a Manhattan.like this one

Comma · 23/01/2009 10:14

SOrry the brooch link has been shoved to the end.!

GrapefruitMoon · 23/01/2009 10:16

I love the look but wouldn't it be really uncomfortable for everyday?

Welcome back Comma btw

RachePache · 23/01/2009 10:16

John Lewis always has lots of vintage brooches - not too expensive.

Comma · 23/01/2009 10:17

I am so glad RubyRedfort is back too - I love her name and can't believe it hadn't been snapped up long ago!

KarlWrenbury · 23/01/2009 10:21

I think Betty is a better name.

GrapefruitMoon · 23/01/2009 10:26
