If so how much? If not do you feel comfortable not tipping - what's the norm please?

i find a cut and blow for £26 extortionate enough and i always pay on switch so no chance to add a top on - i feel comfortable being a tight arse

nappyzonehasastroppytoddler · 22/01/2009 21:47

tip on

LoveMyLapTop · 22/01/2009 21:48

I always feel really uncomfortable tipping.
I have a mobile hairdresser who i know earns more than me ( judging by all teh fab hols she goes on !)
I dont tip tho cos she uses my shampoo wter and leccy!

Heated · 22/01/2009 21:48

I don't tip.

SlartyBartFast · 22/01/2009 21:48

i do 10%, roughly,
i pay by card but ask them to add it on.

LittlePeanut · 22/01/2009 21:49

I always tip. It comes to £25 which I pay by Switch and then I add £3 cash.

fluffles · 22/01/2009 21:49

I hate this i feel sooo awkward. I don't tip but only cause i can't work out how to do it without looking utterly condescending and patronising

I only pay £30 for a cut and dry (which isn't really a blowdry as i have curly hair so just sit under the dryer thingy).... i don't think i should tip any more than a fiver at most but i can't bear to hand over coins.

I'm rubbish and sooo british about tipping so will watch this thread with interest.

nancy75 · 22/01/2009 21:49

i always tip, usually about £5

fluffles · 22/01/2009 21:50

Those who tip - do you hand the money to the receptionist or hairdresser? What do you say when you hand it over?

janeite · 22/01/2009 21:50

I do - about 10%.

Dropdeadfred · 22/01/2009 21:50

I always tip..10%

Ronaldinhio · 22/01/2009 21:52

I hate this - I get really embarrased. I asked them to put the tip as on my card as that's how I was paying, but they couldn't do that and I wasn't sure I had enough cash to give anything other than a £1 and I was so flustered I didn't tip at all. I figured a crap tip was worse than no tip. I never know what to do and then get in a complete pickle. Sad muppet that I am!

General op is that tipping is expected?

Linnet · 22/01/2009 22:04

I don't tip. A cut and blow dry costs me around £30 and if I'm getting highlights as well which I get every 3 months or so it bumps it up to around £55. I feel that is enough.

pushchair · 22/01/2009 22:09

I asked a friend of mine who is a hairdresser if I should and how it was regarded and she said it was like waiting tables-they rely on tips to bulk out wages. So I now tip a fiver and hand to receptionist saying 'this is for Donna'

Tip my hairdresser on the way out just after he's given me a lovely, Italian (but sadly gay) double-cheek kiss. Leave something at reception for my colourist as she's usually disappeared by then.

squeaver · 22/01/2009 22:52

my colourist. What an arse I sound

beepspirits · 22/01/2009 22:56

Mine costs about £50 as it is (more with colour), so I don't tip usually, but I tip at Christmas.

I used to work at a supermarket, and no one ever tipped me, and I wasn't exactly well paid!!

madlentileater · 22/01/2009 22:56

no, I don't. I think the whole culture of tipping is wrong, people should be paid a decent wage and not have to rely on good will. It's usually the owner who does my hair, would be wierd to give him a tip.
I feel a bit different about waitresses- maybe because it's harder work (imo)

cheekychickenknickers · 22/01/2009 22:59

I tip for it to be shared between them - I always have my toddler with me and they are very patient with colouring and cutting my hair assisted by a 3 year old

cheekychickenknickers · 22/01/2009 23:00

sorry you asked about how much 10-15%

BexieID · 22/01/2009 23:08

Tip? Never thought about, although had mobile one until I moved to Scotland. It's bad enough going, lol.
