If so how much? If not do you feel comfortable not tipping - what's the norm please?

I pay £64 for a cut and blow dry, but never tip the hairdresser because they charge so bloody much.
I tip the Shampooist £2-£3 though.

higgle · 23/01/2009 07:27

£3 for cut and £5 when I have it coloured, but I have been a bit worried about whether this is enough ( cut costs £35, with colour £95. I always make sure I have some change or a fiver when I go out, would be embarrassed to mess about with asking for change etc.

boredveryverybored · 23/01/2009 07:34

I never used to tip hairdressers, just never entered my head to tbh
But have fab new one who I've been going to for about a year now and he is lovely, and does my hair exactly how I want it, he gets me when I ramble nonsensical explanations of what I want I was soooo chuffed the first time he did my hair I tipped then, and have ever since. I go every 2 months and pay around £90 for cut colour and blow. Tip £10

LoveMyLapTop · 23/01/2009 08:03

surley with the minimum wage hairdressers wages are about the same as everyone elses?
Also when i have been to the hairdressers it is usually the salon owner who does my hair and they are loaded!

Nyx · 23/01/2009 08:13

I have very short hair now, so I just go for a 'dry cut' at £7.99 - I generally hand the hairdresser £10 and say 'just keep the rest, thanks very much' (big spender! LOL)

SuzeMcG · 23/01/2009 20:19

I always tip 10% and give £2 to the girl who shampoos.

mileniwmffalcon · 23/01/2009 20:26

the salon director cuts my hair (i go anywhere between once every 6 months and every 2 years lol) it costs me £45, i don't tip her, but i do sometimes (if feeling flush) ask the receptionist to take e.g. £3 or £4 for the shampoo/head massage girl.

quint · 23/01/2009 20:32

I always tip. As a former hairdresser I know how tight things can be and tips used to pay for my lunch!!!!

However I only tip if I like what they've done.

And if you do tip, please don't forget the girl / boy who washed your hair as their pay is really bad!

harpomarx · 23/01/2009 20:32

I try to tip if I've got enough, usually about 10% - though never really sure whether to give it the hairdresser, colourist or shampooer! Mind you, I don't go very much, so I can afford to be a bit generous when I do. I also try to tip when I get my legs waxed. If I could easily afford it, I would always, always tip and very generously. I also always tip in cafes - having worked as a waitress I appreciate how important it is. And I never give a load of small change (ie coppers and 5ps) 'cos I know how annoying it is to divvy up at the end of the day

chandellina · 23/01/2009 21:26

it's great to know what other people do because i was never sure.

I tip my colourist £10. (for a £55 job). i usually give it to the receptionist.

I tip the cutter £4-5 (for a cut that costs about £30).

they are both awesome and i am happy to "reward" them.

i never tip the shampoo girls though. they're usually pretty rubbish at my place, truth be told.

HeadFairy · 23/01/2009 21:27

I don't tip because a cut with highlights costs £120, I can't afford any more than that! I figure it's enough for them to pay their staff decent salaries, esp as I usually have to book 2 weeks in advance as they're so busy!

FairyMum · 23/01/2009 21:31

Nope. It takes about 30 mins for a cut and blowdry and I pay £45, that's enough!!

lrichards77 · 08/07/2014 02:05

As a hairdresser... we appreciate tips but do not expect them. The terms of employment for hairdressers vary and so the wages vary, but any extra is of course welcome. Just remember that maybe your hairdresser is earning less than minimum wage. And if your hair is particularly difficult (extra long or extra thick) they may do you a favour and charge you less so you should show your appreciation with a gesture, whether that's a couple of coins or 10% is up to you. Ditto with mobile hairdressers, they do set their own prices but they still have to be competitive, and although a cut and blowdry doesn't cost them money you'd be surprised how much it costs to do someone's colour.

Peace.

Greengardenpixie · 08/07/2014 07:17

No I don't ever tip. I don't agree with it. I never tip anyone. I don't believe giving a tip helps in the long run...just encourages employers to maintain paying low wages.

MrsDavidBowie · 08/07/2014 07:25

I tip a tenner...pay £100 every 6 weeks

Wishfulmakeupping · 08/07/2014 07:35

I have a mobile hairdresser it always comes to £ 58 so I round it up to 60 always tipped all my hairdressers a couple of pounds even when I use to pay ridiculous city centre prices- £115!! more money then sense

r2d2ismyidealman · 08/07/2014 09:11

I feel uncomfortable either way. I don't feel I should have to tip, I don't tip at the M&S till, but if I don't tip I feel bad. I usually give a flat rate of £5. I've just accepted that I tip restaurants and hairdressers. My real sticking point is taxis. If, for example, it's near £5 then I'll round up, sometimes, depends on the journey, but if it is £5 I leave it. I'm all over the shop with whether or not I tip the taxi ... I should get a rule for this.

missmartha · 08/07/2014 09:29

I tip 10% on a £120 cut and highlight every 6-8 weeks.

Worth it imo and I know hairdressers aren't paid a huge amount. He makes my hair look lovely and I've got nightmare hair.

splodgeness · 08/07/2014 13:41

I tip 10% on cut and colour which usually comes to about £80. But sometimes if I have had a special colour or treatment and it comes to more than that I just can't bring myself to cough up any more.

Usually the hairdresser will take you to the till and that is your opportunity to give them a few coins. When mine went off pregnant I gave her £20 because I like her and we chat a lot, but sometimes I don't have any change and don't give any. I always worry that they write it down on your notes!

hollyisalovelyname · 08/07/2014 20:29

Yes. Blowdry is 27 euro so I give the stylist 2 euro and the girl who washes it 1 euro.
If the stylist washes it herself I give her 3 euro.
I give a tenner to the colourist.
Sometimes I resent it - when I read on Mumsnet that many give nothing Smile
I don't think I get better service.
My parents always tipped so I do too.

hollyisalovelyname · 08/07/2014 20:33

Pushchair does Donna actually get it ?
I always tip in cash, never put it on the Visa ( in restaurants) as I don't believe the waiting staff get it.
When I was a chambermaid ( student job) the head of housekeeping went into the rooms first to get the tips left behind by the guests Hmm

HamAndPlaques · 08/07/2014 21:47

I don't tip the hairdresser as she co-owns the salon and does alright, but I tip the salon junior who does the hair wash / coffees etc a fiver.

TollgateDebs · 09/07/2014 08:31

No tipping here either. I changed to a cheaper hairdresser too after mine talked about her holidays and tennis lessons. I worked out her hourly rate once, based on the previous client and then me and it worked out at £150 +.

playftseforme · 09/07/2014 08:33

I tip 5 to my stylist for a cut and blow dry which costs 45-50 (she also washes my her so no additional dilemma re tipping shampooist!)
