What should I wear with this dress please ?

We have a posh dinner coming up in three weeks and I managed to get this dress in my size.
What should I wear with it - shoes, colour of tights, jewellery and handbag?

I am the biggest frump and have no idea about being stylish.

Please can someone help? Much appreciated in advance

Ooh I like those office ones Otter, perhaps the black ones with thick black tights and delicate necklace.

nontoxic · 17/01/2009 20:37

I think the Office ones are too high - as someone else said, the dress has a thirties 'daydress' look and they would clash with it stylewise. It puts me in mind of a bohemian Oxford bluestocking, in the best sense of the word (ie someone brainy but up for a damn good time!)

Have you looked at schuhstore yet? Don't miss this chance!

Are they not just lovely !

I'm not a huge fan of jewellery but have a very fine gold chain necklace with tiny rubies in it. It is quite subtle.
(I'm all excited about going now - I did not want to go but it is the only thing we go to once a year)

Here is the Schuh link

Your necklace sounds perfect.

GentleOtter · 17/01/2009 20:51

The schuh link does not let you post up individual shoes. There is a nice purple coloured pair but I think they would clash with the blood red.

Thank you all for helping me get sorted out.

this

or
these

or
these (apparently animal "matches" nothing so "goes" with everything.

Its hard to say what the dress will look like on, but I would worry that unless you have killer shoes, it may look a bit serious.

Unless that is what you were going for...?

What kind of vibe are you going for?

purpleduck · 17/01/2009 23:18

I just looked at my first link again, and totally changed my mind.

Disregard

purpleduck · 17/01/2009 23:26

suede would go with the velvet

strappy would "lighten" the look a bit

the ruffle on these would compliment the gathers on the dress

saucy!!

a bit of bling

I Love shoes

nontoxic · 17/01/2009 23:46

Purpleduck, you must be the queen of shoes.
My faves are the red tie-front mjs.
You might be right about the others being too serious.

tb73 · 18/01/2009 12:46

Make sure you get the right underwear! If you get a good pair of control pants (that are thigh length and come up under your bust) they will make you feel and look fantastic. Take your dress with you to get fitted for the right bra (not M&S) and this will also make a really huge difference, I promise.

Finally, manicured nails, good posure and a big smile are the best accessories. Enjoy your night!

purpleduck · 18/01/2009 13:56

Thanks nontoxic

GentleOtter - let us know what you choose

GentleOtter · 18/01/2009 19:40

Those 'animal' ones, purpleduck. Ohmygod I love them! Do you think I should disregard the dress and only go in those shoes?

The vibe is confident with a bit of Lilith thrown in - there is a strong political slant to this soiree and those that we have been hectoring lobbying will be there.
It is my one crack at the whip so to speak as it really is the only night dh and I go out in the entire year.

Oh god, yes! Just the shoes!!! People will def notice you, and I bet you will be swamped with invites .

CuttySark · 19/01/2009 10:01

It is a thought purpleduck as there will be MP's and a lord there. I would like to get their attention....
