How many of you wear make up every day?

I don'y, mostly because I'm lazy but also because I'm lucky that my skin is fairly good and I've never felt the need to cover it up. So I've never got in the habit.

Anyway, now I'm mid-30s, hit the dizzy heights of middle management, and not looking so hot (being 18 weeks pregnant). Is now the time to start making the effort? And what is the bare minimum I can get away with (and look better, iykwim)?

I do wear make up when I go out, and am pretty competent (if slightly conservative) at application, and I'm quite happy to buy decent brands.

Thought and suggestions? Thanks all!

LISPY! does black honey lipstick suit everyone? is it a subtle everyday sort of lipstick? I am intrigued by the enthusiasm with which you recommend it.

Zebraa · 01/12/2008 12:45

I wear it, I wouldn't leave the house without it to be honest. I have really good skin so just use a really good mosituriser but I wear No. 7 P&P foundaton, Touche Eclat, bourjois blush, and maxfactor mascara, I will wear barry m eyeliner if I'm going out and mac brown eyeshadow.

I love being female!!

Annthecat · 01/12/2008 12:47

I love putting my make up one. It's quick and I feel 'ready' and completed once it's on.

drying my hair though, I loathe.

psychomum5 · 01/12/2008 12:50

I do. Not always full-face (ie, foundation and everything), but I always have on lipstick and mascara.

feel a bit 'naked' otherwise.

actually, the only time I don;t is if I am ill.....and it is a good give-away to people if I am bare-faced.....and they give me sympathy

ChukkyPig · 01/12/2008 12:52

Only when going out, meeting clients at work, or if for some reason I feel inspired (rare).

Although I do feel a bit better with make-up on, I'd hate to feel like I was unable to leave the house without it. I know one person who gets up early so her partner rarely sees her without her face on which is rather sad.

ChukkyPig · 01/12/2008 12:57

Women who don't wear makeup look "dull and uninspired"

Maybe they are confident in how they look? Maybe they are natural beauties?

bluebump · 01/12/2008 13:06

Yes I always wear make up every day.

Foundation - Clinique Superbalanced
Mascara - whatever is on offer but usually Clinique, Maybelline or Rimmel
Concealer - Boots Natural Collection, only 1.99!
Lip Gloss or just lip balm

I'll add more to that if i'm going anywhere nice or out in the evening, usually some eye shadow and some Benefit Hollywood Glo.

Penthesileia · 01/12/2008 13:30

Clearly I am 'dull and uninspired'. Never wear makeup, not even when I got married. I think I look ok without it. And I'm pretty well groomed, TBH. Always getting complimented on my appearance. I sound arrogant, but don't mean to be: I don't think I'm a looker or anything, but makeup wouldn't make me look any better - only 'painted', IYSWIM. Am lucky to have good skin, so don't 'need' it, either.

honestfriend · 01/12/2008 14:29

I think if you can look great with no make up you are VERY lucky! I have great skin- so I am told but it is very very pale- and I have purple under eye shadows. I need foundation to even it all out, then put a bit of colour back. Eyelashes are sparse and my colouring is fair- without make up I look dead.

Can't see it is a contentious issue- either you like wearing make up or you don't, and either you care how you look or you don't!

Annthecat · 01/12/2008 14:37

Has someone sactually said you are 'dull and uninspired' if you don't wear make up.

I wish I could manage to look halfway decent without the slap, but I don't. I look pale, spotty and rather care worn.

and obviously with a bit of make up I am transformed into a tanned nubile flawless moggle.

christMAScomesbutonceayear · 01/12/2008 14:40

yes, because otherwise I'd look like crap

bettythebauble · 01/12/2008 15:15

I wear make up every day- the only time in recent memory that I haven't put any on was the weekend before last when i was so ill with a cold a)I couldn't be bothered and b) I would still have looked like death warmed up.

nooka · 01/12/2008 19:00

I've never worn make up, and I don't use any other stuff on my face. I suspect that's why my skin is good. I can't believe that putting stuff full of all sorts of things is actually good for skin. Let it breathe!

I only notice other people's make up if it is overdone. It's not my first priority (or indeed a priority at all) to consider why other people might choose to wear make up, so I really can't see why anyone should care whether I do. I am happy being a woman, and know how to knock em out, if I so choose, but when I go to work it is as a professional, and it's my mind that matters, not the fact that I have no lippy on.

giddykipper · 01/12/2008 19:09

Funnily enough nooka I argue that my skin is good because I wear make-up! I've had SPF30 on my face every day for years, my skin never gets tanned which is why I think I have no wrinkles.

LaDiDaDi · 01/12/2008 19:16

Almost always wear foundation (No 7 Protect and Perfect at the moment), concealer (Benefit Boing is the best ever), bit of blusher/ benefit highlighter/benefit bronzer and mascara.

I rarely wear lipstick, tend to just wear lip balm and I sometimes wear a little grey eyeshadow if I want to look particularly smart during the day.

For nights out I wear much more eye-make up and might manage to wear some lipgloss.

honestfriend · 01/12/2008 19:38

agreed giddy- I have used Clinique City Block for over 15 years and have very few if any wrinkles at all. I think make up protect your skin- I put on moisturiser, city block and eye cream every morning, then my foundation and I am TOLD that I look 10 yrs younger. Not boasting- just wanting to extol the virtues of looking after your skin- it pays off years down the line.

Hulababy · 01/12/2008 19:46

I wear a little bit of make up pretty much every day. I use Virgin one step base and then Bodyshop's lip and cheek stain. That is sufficient for every day stuff for me.

mumchie · 01/12/2008 20:00

I always wear make everyday. A bit less in the week as I'm only doing school run i.e blusher, mascara, vaseline on lips and a bit more at the weekend so I feel a bit nicer.

Bare minerals is great...really easy and so quick, you can go as natural or as full on as you like!

Joolyjoolyjoo · 01/12/2008 20:07

Wow- I must be a right old sob, as I never wear make-up, unless I am going out somewhere special (v. rare!), and even at that I wear the bare minimum!

My thinking is that because I never wear make-up, when I do make the effort, everyone goes "wow- you look great!" On the other hand, if you wear make-up every day, that's the way people come to expect you to look, so if for some reason you ever appear without make-up everyone thinks "Oh my God- how rough does she look!!" See what I mean? I prefer to set people's expectations of me very low, so that I can occasionally surprise them!

Lol Joolyjool. I think that's pretty much my feelings too besides I think most men's faces look just fine, and most men I know don't put anything on their faces (except shaving related stuff). However I am quite happy for other people to do whatever they like, so long as they don't ascribe motives I don't have to my not wearing makeup.
