Come on everyone, I know you're all sick but pick up your beds and walk this way

The rules (anyone can join):

  • Sunscreen at all times;
  • No or little booze - it's allowed at the weekend if you want it;
  • Walking is important, a small amount every day if possible, 30 mins if you can;
  • Lots of water, aim for 2 litres a day;
  • Apply body cream as often as possible;
  • Use hand cream;
  • Go to bed early, by 10.30pm if poss;
  • Eat healthily;
  • Be happy.

The idea is that we all feel happier, healthier and glow with the good food, sleep, exercise, water and lack of sun damage.

Some people are doing India and Neris's Idiot Proof Diet (Atkins, more or less), others are doing Slimy World, others are just being as healthy as possible.

IDEA - for those of us who struggle with low mood for whatever reason - try to post five achievements here each day, however tiny.

Welcome everyone, have a good week.

Having had too much booze on Friday, I#m firmly back on the wagon. I can't cope with it - 3 glasses of wine and a brandy and I feel like crap. Hence I didn't run and have only made it to the gym today because of other commitments.

Must Do Better.

Will have think about achievements but may struggle to find 5. [defeatist]

eemie · 26/11/2008 18:45

Was thinking 3 more realistic - especially as have spent most of last 4 days in bed .

Got dd to school this morning
Cooked meal this evening
Helped dd make her fairy for homework

That's it since Friday

Aargh

Hello eemie and Saggars, where is everyone?

I am returned from my holibobs with children and parents. Thankfully DH stayed at home and worked. Would have been too stressful to have him along too.

On the plus side the holiday was great and mum and dad looked after the kids, on the minus side, I have eaten non-stop. Mothers home cooking will be the death of me. Also got horribly sunburnt on Wednesday. So surely am bottom of boot camp class.

Achievements . . . hmmm . . .

Eaten lots of fruit and veg (and sweets but surely fruit and veg cancelled them out)
Got Hospital to repay me $680 YAYAYAAYAYAYAYYYY
Survived said holiday with my parents and children in close quarters.

Phew, that's 3 in a week!

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 28/11/2008 10:12

Oh yes CS - bottom of the class (only so that I won't be) lol

Hmm - bootcamp - yes....well....nuff said.

And 3 things;

I've hoovered the stairs. This is good as I hate hoovering the stairs.
Been to the docs about a minor problem that I've been putting off. Hopefully all is OK.
Still off the booze [snile]

eemie · 28/11/2008 16:48

Welcome back CS, well done Saggars on hoovering the stairs. My dd used to show me up when she was a toddler by being terrified of the hoover .

Felt marginally less awful today. No bootcamping as such - (too wobbly for walks, eating comfort cake with mocha coffee) but did get brow & lip wax today so look less like Yeti.

Achievements:-

Helped with preparations for school sale
took drycleaning/put wash on (baby steps)
Rescued a puppy which was loose in the traffic at rush hour dd very proud of me

Lots of others still sick, hope they stagger back here soon

OP posts:
VanessaParody · 29/11/2008 00:49

I feel terrible. Will have to go to the Dr's next week. Can't bootcamp. Have no energy. Only just managing to keep family & farm fed & watered.

I'll be back when I can.

unknownrebelbang · 29/11/2008 01:00

Sorry to hear you're still not well VP.

I'm doing okish bootcampwise, although exercise is bare minimum at the moment, having had a very heavy month at work.

Got blood tests etc again next week and seeing the nurse on Friday.

DH now office-bound so am hoping stress levels at home will now reduce, although like everything else there are pros and cons .

Achievements today, hmm:

Walked for the first time in weeks;
Visited my favourite aunt, bunch of flowers in hand, cos she's been made redundant this week (and I only found out through the local rag last night ).
Had a peaceful couple of hours with DH.
Remained calm when the blardy hamster chewed DS2's karate gi, ffs.

LoveAndSqualor · 29/11/2008 17:34

Hey all,

Again, sorry for absence - start back at work on monday, and would have spent the whole week dashing around readying myself for that ... were it not for the fact that DS and I have had weird-and-grim sickness bug thing ... siiiiiiiiiigh ....

So no bootcamping as such, really. But! I will be back at work with a computer and no baby as of monday (well, you know, and a job - but really, how much can I be expected to do? It's all about reading the paper and drinking coffee, isn't it?) so will recommence regular posting then.

Chin up, all those who are languishing!

unknownrebelbang · 01/12/2008 22:28

How's today gone L&S?

eemie · 02/12/2008 14:45

Yes, how was it L&S?

Missing the chat on this thread.

Little achievements yesterday & today:-

Went back to work
Went to hear carol concert by our old choir, saw old friends
Posted off vital docs for house sale
Tidied desk
found missing vouchers in rubbish

Bootcamping a little better

Hope clinic appointment goes well ureb.

Has chutneymary produced yet? (Out of touch emoticon)

OP posts:
ClaudiaSchiffer · 04/12/2008 10:32

Good Lord is everyone still poorly or have you all deserted bootcamp during winter months? Like you eemie missing the friendly chat on this thread.

Bootcamping is going pretty badly down here in the southern hemisphere, we still have parents staying so am eating like a right ol' fatso and drinking to stay sane. Have had some lovely walks but can feel myself getting lazier and lazier. Not drinking much water - why bother when wine so easily available?? Am rather writing off the next couple of weeks until my folks go home - then will be BOOTCAMP QUEEN!

Well done eemie on your achievements. L & S how are things?

To all who are ill, get better soon.

eemie · 05/12/2008 15:13

Claudia, good to see you, it's been a bit lonely recently.

Still feeling pretty strange after labyrinthitis but gradually improving.

Had to go to work on my day off for mandatory training.

And puppy ran away from me in the park this morning - I was no match for rival attraction of about 10 dogs all gambolling together. Lots of extra exercise for me chasing her .

Achievements - did my tax, yipee, they owe me money. Cooked decent meal two nights running. Mended puppy's chewed bed. Persuaded colleague not to take on extra work she hasn't got time to do (although admit I used threats).

Need to drink more water - coffee is making my giddiness worse

Saggars, Vanessa, ureb, how goes it?

OP posts:
unknownrebelbang · 05/12/2008 18:24

Had my three month follow-up to the diagnosis today.

My Hb1ac is down to 6.1 (target is below 7, previously 7.4).

Fasting level also 6.1.

Still anaemic but iron levels increasing.

BP also improving but not quite 140/80 yet, and at a level which wouldn't be an issue if it wasn't for the diabetes.

Weight more or less what it was pre-children (alas not so well contained...).

Thanks everyone for the support, it really helped back in September.

eemie · 06/12/2008 13:30

Dragged self to sing carols at 'swanky' party with nine others from choir. Had to get agency babysitter to start at 6pm (£35). No time to eat anything.

Spent three hours rehearsing, standing about waiting (some of it outside in the dark, they wanted us to sing to guests as they arrived) and singing.

We had to ask for glasses of water.

Not only did guests not listen, they talked louder, indeed they SHOUTED over us. Then we were asked to leave via the utility room.

For this they donated £200 to the choir.

Then I coughed all night.

And puppy chewed mended bed again.

OP posts:
VanessaParody · 06/12/2008 15:35

l&s - how is WORK?

ureb - that all sounds v. good. Well done. How do you find your diet management on a daily basis?

eemie - oh they sounds like charming party guests. Did you spit in their mulled wine bid them a Merry Christmas on your way out?!

I am still taking huge amounts of penicillin. Initially I felt better but as the week wore on, I felt pretty terrible again. I had a huge coughing fit this morning and my ribs still hurt.

I am alarmed at how quickly I can get fat. I haven't been running for 3 months but I don't exactly have a sedentary lifestyle. I can't believe that I was in size 12 clothes so soon after having Archie and now my 14's are a cosy fit.

I did have a body scrub last night followed by all over moisturiser and used the Flexitol foot scrub (blue grainy stuff that you use on wet skin). AND I painted my nails. So I looked reasonably presentable for my stint at the school Christmas Fair today.

I think we need some new recruits here.

eemie · 07/12/2008 20:24

ureb, those numbers are looking good, you must be pleased - are you feeling okay?

Glad you managed to scrub up for the fair VP - not such great news about the cough, though. Mine still v. wearing as well.

Going to snuggle down for early night - hard frost by 5pm here.

OP posts:
unknownrebelbang · 11/12/2008 11:05

I'm feeling fine, thanks.

Diet management is fairly simple tbh Vanessa, although have been a bit lax this last week ...

It's really the bog-standard healthy-eating malarkey. The one thing I probably didn't do was eat regularly, so I ensure now that I eat regularly and, as far as possible, healthily. I don't eat much veg, so make up for that with fruit/salad (very restricted salad it has to be said).

There is still much room for improvement, tbh, but I have found that by being sensible most of the time, being fairly strict about breakfast/lunch most days, gave me leeway with the evening meal/treats.

The other thing that I have done is stick to 30 minutes (slow) exercise biking six days a week, and walked whenever possible. I can tell that the walking has dropped off (manic month at work combined with the colder/wetter weather), so must try harder.

BP is round about normal too, since my return visit.

moonshine · 12/12/2008 10:51

Knock knock can I can back in please [kicks tumbleweeds out of the way]? How the devil are you all? There seems to be a lot of illness around.

Can I give a little wave to WWW just in case she peeps in?

Are the other absent bootcampers around the place but just not posting here (show your faces now!)

Ureb - you seem to be doing very well, actually.

I have been on a sort of MN holiday but wanted to come back to the fold before the Xmas stufffest festivities.

I have still been bootcamping most of the time, although weight loss is still frustratingly slow/non-existent, but at least I have not put it back on. But I have minimal self-control so, as much as I am looking forward to it, Christmas week is worrying me (I always put on several pounds). Are you all going to have a bootcamp 'holiday' or is it just me who intends to stuff her face with truffles and Baileys (and tirimisu and mince pies etc etc)?

Are you still doing the three positive things?

Today mine are:

  1. I am not at work
  2. I have been to the gym
  3. I don't have to wash my hair today
moonshine · 12/12/2008 10:53

Just realised how bad going to the gym but not washing my hair looks . But I have just had my roots re-done so was told not to, honest!

eemie · 14/12/2008 11:05

Good to see you, ureb and moonshine. I've started feeling more human again - labyrinthitis finally cleared up. Have started cleaning and tidying again which is usually a sign that I've turned the corner.

Don't know where all the other bootacampers are - have been pining a bit. Some have staggered in just to say they're ill and staggered out again.

Got through last minute panic re: house sale last week - solicitors screwed up - but still due to exchange contracts on Tuesday. If that happens it'll be a load off my mind.

Achievements:

Had good appraisal at work and got small pay rise which will be handy;
Ate healthily on three days (but v. badly on one - long gaps then emergency chocolate );
Weight down again - back to pre-baby weight in another 2.5kg (and baby only 10 yrs old )

OP posts:
ClaudiaSchiffer · 17/12/2008 08:11

Hello hello hello

Very quiet here, I guess this time of year is really no time for bootcamping. What with Christmas food and wine glut to be consumed n' all.

Here all rather ordinary. My folks left today to fly back to the UK, I feel utterly bereft and a little relieved.

Good things I have done today are . . .

  1. Drank lots of water - seem to have insatiable thirst
  2. Read some of my book
  3. Revelled in the peace and quiet at home.

Hope everyone else is well and involved in happy Christmas preparations.

moonshine · 18/12/2008 17:56

Eemie - you are very, er, brave moving house at this time of year. Has the deed been done?

I am trying not to totally roll off the wagon and be crushed by its wheels now that I have officially finished work until the 5th January (small cheer). The temptation is to start drinking and not stop until the Sunday before, especially as I have in-laws to entertain on Saturday and then am off to be criticised by my ever grumpy parents' house on Sunday.

And I have bought some Baileys (well the Sainsbury equivalent which is just as nice and so much cheaper).

And said parents have bought us a tin of Celebrations.

And I am planning to cook 3 desserts on Saturday.

That was just a teeny tiny snapshot of the bad to come (I have so much more [hides fudge yule log, gin, wine etc).

The good

  1. No work for more than 2 weeks
  2. I have finally cleaned my bathroom
  3. School and all its demands is nearly out for Christmas (to paraphrase a certain song).
eemie · 18/12/2008 23:39

No, we moved in August but we're still trying to sell. Living in a rented house for now.

No, it didn't exchange - all sorts of problems down the chain, and our buyer hasn't got enough for the deposit (?) and hasn't decided about the fixtures and fittings (??) and our solicitor has sent vital docs to wrong address, sent wrong docs, etc .

Only the estate agent is keeping me sane. How many times have you heard someone say that?

Quite.

  1. Have moved office this week. Now have my own office after sharing with six (6, VI) different people in five years. The last one very noisy.
  2. Cooked best ragu ever (never been much of a meat cook)
  3. Went on date with dh - heard Ex Cathedra's Christmas by Candlelight at St John's Smith Square, which was amazing, especially the Roderick Williams Adonai, knocked our socks off .
OP posts:
VanessaParody · 19/12/2008 23:59

Huge apologies for totally crappy absence. I am free of bronchitis/tonsilitis but so very, very busy. The children finished school today so I am now officially entering the Christmas period. DH had his birthday yesterday which is very bloody inconvenient of him. It involved fish & chips AND cake.

Bootcamping? Hahahaha. Shall we suspend the rules until the New Year?

I am trying to spend my £250 SweatyBetty vouchers on tons of new winter running gear as I aim to start again when schools restarts. I'll be starting with one measly mile, two mornings a week and build it up again. I will post results here and not on the running thread were everyone claims to be an overweight new runner but does 5k in the time it takes me to put my trainers on.

eemie, huge sympathies on the whole nasty house selling/buying situation. I hope it works out and soon.

claudia - chin up. Will you be seeing lots of friends etc over Christmas to cheer you up?

moonshine, good to see you back.

ureb - give yourself an extra Christmas present for being so good.

eemie · 21/12/2008 22:14

Well, I think I've finally cottoned on to why the bottom has dropped out of the bootcamp threads .

Are there enough of us non-exclusive types left around to keep it going, d'you think? Because it was fun for a while, but less so when days at a time go by with no posts.

No doubt the Christmas meet-up died the death for the same reason?

VP, moonshine, Claudia - good to see you. Have a very happy and healthy Christmas and New Year.
