Do you have to be skinny to wear skinny jeans?

Out of interest. I see skinny jeans are very in and as i have inherited my fathers chunky legs I'm presuming skinny jeans would be a definite no-no.

I'm a size 14, 5'2" pearshape.

Skinny jeans, yes or no?

Just wear whatever you like and stop worrying

flowerybeanbag · 06/11/2008 11:59

I am exactly same size and shape as BirdyArms. I do have a pair but they only come out with long slouchy jumpers and tucked into chunky boots. Otherwise would look awful.

lilysmummy2007 · 06/11/2008 12:03

butter i have same overhang from csection and it is unsightly, but have invested in pair of bridget jonesesque giant pants and seens to do the trick

littlestrawberry · 06/11/2008 12:04

I'm a size 14 pear shaped and look awful in skinny jeans. They make me look about 10 foot wide.

Do think it depends on your style though, I'm not exactly cutting edge fashion wise

CountessDracula · 06/11/2008 12:06

I really think pears should avoid skinny jeans

I am an apple and a 14 (ie i have no hips and fairly slim thighs) and I wouldn't wear them. Mind you I am 42

I was walking behind a girl this am who was about 5 foot 2 and i would guess a 14, she was a total pear and wearing black skinnies and she looked really awful

neolara · 06/11/2008 12:14

No-one over 16 looks good in skinny jeans, surely? Actually not sure how many under 16 look ok.....

I am 5'8" AND A CHUNKY 14. i compromise with straight leg jeans. Got some nice dark ones from Boden last winter. Just got back into them after ds was born 8 weeks ago.

ilookbetterwithdrink · 06/11/2008 12:24

I look awful in them as i think im just too short. but hrhsaintmamazon ceetainly would nt describe herself as skinny but she wears them and looks fab!

Dragonbutter · 06/11/2008 12:35

bloody hell where did you all appear from.
give me a minute to catch up.

ok so they would look ok if i cover up my calfs with boots and cover my thighs and bottom with a dress. that just leaves my knees which are hideous.
..and if everybody else is made to wear a blindfold right?

or i can stick with my usual bootleg, which are already in my wardrobe and i wouldn't have to go shopping.

and mamazon is beautiful iirc, she's one of those people who can wear anything.
i'm not.

do it- I'm 5 10 and a 12 but with a large gut and I wear them with boots, wellies (they are excellent with wellies) and ballet slippers. They do look a bit odd with the pumps as they shorten my legs but they are ok. You need to have good legs not skinny legs, and it took me agers to take the plunge but now I have I'm not looking back (even if they are 'out')

minko · 06/11/2008 13:23

OK, so shoot me. I'm a size 14, 5'10" and 37 years old but I love mine. Took a bit of getting used to and I am a little paranoid that I look too old for them, but they are sooo comfy! And only £15 from DP's. (Long tops and knee boots de rigeur though).

Guadalupe · 06/11/2008 13:26

I am a pear shape and size 12/14. I think I look awful in them, make my legs look like turkey drummers.

annoyingdevil · 06/11/2008 13:43

But really skinny people look silly in them too.(like pipe cleaners). I think you need to be slim, but not too skinny for them (that count's me out, of course!)

Yeni · 06/11/2008 14:21

I think you do have to be quite slim. Even straigt jeans make me look like a parsnip.

littlestrawberry · 06/11/2008 14:23

LOL at parsnip.

I tried them with chunky boots but thought I looked like a carrot, now I'm thinking parsnip is more appropriate

Guadalupe · 06/11/2008 14:45

parsnip

CurrantBun · 06/11/2008 16:30

I'm pretty skinny (and short!) and I still haven't convinced myself to buy a pair. I think flares/bootcuts look much better on me and balance me out more.

But that may be just because that's what I'm comfortable with and I'm not someone who ventures much outside her comfort zone ...

sorkycake · 06/11/2008 16:33

I have them but my thighs don't touch in the middle and that I think is the key.
Straight leg give the look but are a little more forgiving.

HRHSaintMamazon · 06/11/2008 16:36

oh no seriously dragon - plenty of things look bloody ridiculous on me.
i bought my skinny jeans about 3 years ago...way before they became fashionable and quite by mistake.

first time i wore them it was due to a wardrobe meltdown. i felt silly and way too old and fat to be wearing them. but i got comliments all day long.

so now i wear them all the time and probably shouldn't.

Wizzska · 06/11/2008 16:50

You can wear skinny jeans if you tuck them in to boots like TheGoat says, it balances out any big arse problems (I have experience). I too have c-section overhang / too many biscuits overhang, and wear skinny jeans. Haven't been caught by the fashion police yet, and DH is quite forgiving and says nice things to me anyway.

mrsmaidamess · 06/11/2008 17:00

I am 5 ft 9 and size 16 14. I can't do mine up am having a rest from skinnys at the moment, but will rewear when I lose half a stone Gok says so.

Ewe · 06/11/2008 17:20

It's about shape not size IMO, oh and attitude! I am a 12/14 and wear skinny jeans but I am an apple so think it's not that bad as I have a v.small bum!

I wear them with longish jumpers, wrap tops, t-shirts etc. I think providing you don't have a fat arse you can do skinny jeans you just need to feel confident wearing them.
