So.... mners....What should I wear to my sister's wedding????

My sister is getting married in April - so I have loads of time to look for an outfit... but formal dressing REALLY scares me and I have found myself getting really very extremely nervous about... well... what to wear???

It is an afternoon city wedding with a sit down meal followed by dancing and general partying to a Brit Pop band after. My daughter is a bridesmaid for it. The bridesmaids are wearing chocolate brown and my Mum has bought a beautiful brightly coloured and quite highly patterned dress from East. It is browns, blues and pinks. Tasteful and jolly. It is very boho chic!

My outfit needs to not clash with my Mum. My sister is not keen on me wearing something completely plain as her adult bridesmaid is wearing a simple but stunning plain brown cocktail dress and she wants her to stand out in the photos.

Another very lovely mner suggested this (see below) which I think is lovely... and kindly added - that I should ask in 'style and beauty' too!

So I have taken her advice - Does anyone else have any good ideas???

Urrrmmmm... sheepishly calls mners please heeeeeelp!!!!

brimfull · 05/10/2008 11:24

GOd noooo

looks like a waitress uniform

with your figure and age you need something sexyish and young

teafortwo · 05/10/2008 13:01

ggirl - thank you!!!! I was thinking that but doubting myself quite a bit too!!!

I have e-mailed back saying - the LK Bennett one is my prefered choice - it is the colours I am asking do you mind about - that is all really!

Have only just got round to reading this thread! I had a nightmare last year buying for a wedding and of course ended up having half a day to find something and ended up with an expensive mistake from Coast! Really think there is something to be said for buying stuff when you see it and not when you NEED it!

Can't see a Matilda dress on the Coast website - tho sometimes they do diasppear and come back after a few days! Agree with ggirl re the Hobbs dress - def a no. Which LK Bennett one did you like?

I saw someone trying this on and it looked lovely (high neck tho so not sure if you like. Also may be too wintery for a April wedding - my sis got married in a April at it was very hot and sunny!)
here

I also quite like this if you are ok with the colour?

traceybath · 05/10/2008 18:23

definitely no to the hobbs dress - is your sister trying to make you look bad on purpose??

lkbennett much better - which one is in your basket so we can think about shoes etc?

h sorry for not explaining which dress very well.... It is this lovely thing!!!!

Thanks for feedback on my sister's choice of dress! I looked a bit like this when I opened the link - ??!!??

Anyway - today she went into town tried on the dress above herself got someone to take a picture of her in it e-mailed the photo to me and wrote "It is gorgous! Me and my dp don't mind that it is black and white. What is important is that you feel comfortable in it. We want you to feel yourself on our wedding day." So GREEN LIGHT on the colour!!!! Eventually!!!!!! Oh well - that is sister's for ya!

OllieWollieWoo · 05/10/2008 19:07

Oooo - lovely dress teafortwo. Hope you like it on! (Saw this whilst trawling the Laura Ashley website for bargains in todays sale and it reminded me a little bit of the LK Bennett one - may be worth a look if not entirely happy with LKB one - tho think LKB one has the edge?????)

teafortwo · 05/10/2008 19:12

Olliwolliewoo - I like i like i like - oh yes - def a good standby!!!!

Ha ha ha about something 'white' - infact I think she put it on so I could imagine it on me more easily - but we don't look very alike all I know is it looks very good on her now!!!

So ..... shoes, bag, hairstyle to go with said lovely LKBennett dress, ladies???

I've always been hopeless accessorizing but whilst the Next bag is nice, me thinks its too big for a wedding. You don't want to take away from your dress. I would go for smallish clutch bag

Something like this (I am a sucker for things with bows on them!)here or maybe too fussy?
or here

nice

Re shoes - I'd go for a simple peep toed heel or maybe a patent mary jane????

brimfull · 05/10/2008 20:05

tea4two-your sister sounds like a bridezilla!

teafortwo · 05/10/2008 20:18

I'd been eyeing up the next one - is it a bit of a nod to 50s style too? Very nice - I like a lot!!!

The thing that worries me is... I am a bit scared of not having room for all the Mummy things for parenting a 2 yr old- few fiddly keep her quiet toys, spare pants, spare dress, babywipes and cardi won't fit in that sexy little number!!! That is why I suggested the big one!

Regarding shoes - In general I am queen of flip flops (I got married in a pair) in summer and Queen of the flat boots in winter - However, I have one pair of grown-up lady-like timeless shoes from Hobbs... black rounded toe, with a not too chunky, not too high heel and simple cut outs on the toes. I am wondering - I think they could really go well with this dress and not give me blisters or make me scared of falling - plus I know I am happy walking in them! They are matt black leather.

I like the Hobbs one, but it is not wedding caliber imho.

traceybath · 05/10/2008 20:36

OK - shoe wise i'd go black - perhaps something patent or mock-croc

cheaper versions in m&s which have the benefit of insolia (comfy inner soles)

i'd go for a clutch bag wise and put all child stuff in another bag on pushchair.

topshop have a fab clutch (in vogue not on website yet) - its £25 and judith lieber'esque. Its shaped like a love heart and covered in red diamante - sounds vile but is very sweet and would be fab for a wedding!

or you could go classic like this

teafortwo · 05/10/2008 20:38

Thanks Aefondkiss - and I noticed that my sister had no desire to run out and try that Hobbs one on in the good name of helping me choose a dress!!! I think the LK Bennett one is much more of a "wow" how extremely very very nice! I think that is why I got the picture of her in it. She saw it - and wanted to try it on because it was so lovely!!!

OP posts:
Aefondkiss · 05/10/2008 20:52

oh I thought it was a red/pink one you liked in l.k bennett, I must pay more attention!

I would obviously consider some serious statement shoes (c'mon it is your sister's wedding and that dress really needs the perfect shoes just a teensy bit out your comfort zone) and a colourful/sparkly bag, because the dress is very simple, after all.

Remember you won't be doing lots of walking and if your bag is big enough you could have a wee pair of flats in it for when foot ache sets in... you must know which shoes you are buying before you buy the dress, take the shoes with you when you try the dress on (they can always be taken back if they are not right, same for the bag.

teafortwo · 05/10/2008 20:54

giggling at the topshop bag - sounds fun - tried googling it just to see - no luck!

I was wondering though... Won't it look prettier to have one nice bag than a clutch bag and another bag for dds stuff???

... however... I like the 'classic' tres chic!

OP posts:
traceybath · 05/10/2008 20:56

make your DH carry the other bag - will you be taking a pushchair as you could shove all daughter's stuff underneath it

Aefondkiss · 05/10/2008 20:58

l.k bennet recommends we could find similar?

teafortwo · 05/10/2008 21:06

Hey - I have gone from bunny in head lights to - "Oh yes - I am loving this!" It is fun choosing clothes with you style and beauty mners - thanks!!!

OP posts:
teafortwo · 05/10/2008 21:12

What about a bag a bit like the one they recommend? That looks like a good half house to me. Not the massive bag my head wants or the tiny sexy bag my heart wants - but a very nice compromise!!!
