WHY WHY WHY are shoes for little girls so VILE?

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 21/09/2008 06:49

Have been looking for shoes for dd2 (aged 2). Everything pink and shiny or embellished with twee hearts/ribbons. Also preponderance of suede/nubuck to ensure they'll be trashed after five minutes. Why? Do people actually like this stuff?

Those toy shoes are a nightmare, the inner sole of them moves forward with the kids opening them all the time and makes a big ridge in the middle of the shoe, I took DD1's back after 1 week to Clarks and the lady said they were fed up as people were continually bringing them back for the same reason. Also DD1's school has sent a letter this week to say DO NOT send your child into school with the toys in them as the kids are distracted at story time etc as they are playing with their shoes. Big gimmick which is daft, thought Clarks had more sense.

themildmannneredjanitor · 21/09/2008 10:34

ds2 has those toy shoes.
the toy NEVER makes it to school-it is usually lost within 24 hours of buying them!
and as for the sole-no-they are fine. absolutely fine. bnever had any problems with them. or the pair he had last trm.

roisin · 21/09/2008 10:49

It's so easy with boys though isn't it Cod? I go to Clarks and say we need a pair of shoes. Shop assistant brings out 5 prs of black school shoes that all look virtually identical, and ds chooses one.

We go to JJB and I say they can choose a pair no more than £20, not white, and they choose a pair. Job done.

MrsMattie · 21/09/2008 10:53

My son has big, wide feet and we don't have a choice of shoe. Clarks do one pair of clumpy black PC plum shoes in his size. Havne't found his exact size anywhere else, even at specialist shoe shops. in fact, the only time he has ever had a choice (well, since he was about 2 yrs old) is when we were in the USA, where they have lots of stuff in extra-wide.

Umlellala · 21/09/2008 11:22

I had Clarks shoes with a key in the sole/heel about twenty years ago. I loved them!

My dd seems to have easy feet too, as she usually has gorgeous second-hand shoes usually from Primigi or Ecco. And she likes my taste (Generally agree with principle of her shoes, her decision - but it's my money so my limitations!)

Ronaldinhio · 21/09/2008 11:46

All the childrens shoes at the store near us seem not only to be pink but just unsuitable for purpose which is I guess the real jist.
I was so farked off by adult woman looking shoes and sandals for an 18month old
She just has converse type boots all the time now and a pair of trainers.
Does the trick

pgwithnumber3 · 21/09/2008 11:55

mildmannerjanitor - you probably haven't had any problems with the sole because the toy was lost! He didn't have to open it to get it out! After 1 week of DD1 putting that flaming little doll back in the heel, the shoes were unwearable.

piratecat · 21/09/2008 12:05

As soon as my dd got over the size 9, they appeared tobe no choice but to go for a lovely black shoe in clarks. This might just be clarks but some towns don't have many places where you can get leather shoes. I mean my dd was 4, and all those schooly shoes are hideous. There's some lovely purple/lilac/ cute designs until you are about 3 1/2 then bang, you look a turnip. The boys have far far more choice, and nice colours, browns/greens/dark red combos. Nice stitching, and lots of those boot style ones, that would be great to combine for my dd for school/weekend too.

I know it's been said before but putting a toy in a shoe is fucking stupid if you happen to

a, be poor and not able to afford them, hence kid is dissapionted and thinks all shoes should have toys in them-NO its a shoe.

b, be able to afford them but they don't have their size.

c, they adversely affect the fit of the shoe and you get probs with the sole. I mean how bloody ridiculous.

bah

why do people want their kids to be smart all the time let em where tshirts leggings jam and dirt stained clothes.

there really is no harm in it.

they are notdolls

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 21/09/2008 18:13

but that's the point. she's not a doll so why would i want to dress her as one?

I can't see a problem with pink shoes for an girl...I guess those of you who disagree would no doubt even complain if the only shoes available were in navy or brown.. .

Its part of life, girls wear pink boys wear blue. Get over it .

shhhh · 21/09/2008 21:12

btw, I complained in clarks this week..went for shoes for dd (3) and all that was available was bottle green, deep purple and red . Not even dd was happy...ffs she is a girl...girls = pink imo...

StealthPolarBear · 21/09/2008 21:15

My son did pick his own shoes, picked same as his best friend
They were pink and flowery

WinkyWinkola · 21/09/2008 21:16

Well, I'd actually like the choice of colours for my children.

Who tells me what colours my children wear? Pink schmink for girls. I'm tired of being restricted in my purchasing choices in this respect. It's ridiculous.

My DD looks great in blue and DS has a couple of pink things.

And those Lelli Kelly (spelling?) shoes are truly rank. They look like shoes Liberace would wear.

aGalChangedHerName · 21/09/2008 21:17

The dd's who are 2 and 4 choose their own footwear. I do steer them to good choices according to the season but i don't give a shit if they wear navy or pink. They are only shoes fgs.

Why do you care??? My girls like pink. I don't but each to their own hey?

MilkMonitor · 21/09/2008 21:20

STyle and choice is important to some people. I've been in shoe shops when the only shoe colour available for girls is pink. It's like shopping in the Eastern Bloc when you can only get one thing.

swedishmum · 21/09/2008 21:44

Clarks toy shoes are tacky and vile beyond belief. Fortunately they are all too wide to fit my dd3 (4y). Startrite provide lovely untacky patent shoes for school (country people therefore can wipe them easily). Sadly I need to drive 45 miles to Startrite shop.
For non school activities school shoes are banned. They are dull. Dd3 wears Converse or twinkly shoes, but never Clarks with butterflies/bows etc. Trainers are the work of the devil and banned for anything except active sport. This ban includes the 3 teenage children. None are allowed into town in trainers, even 12yo ds.

swedishmum · 21/09/2008 21:45

Reading that message back I sound like a control freak nutter. You should hear my views on football tops....

I agree with Cod. Have promised little dd Clarks shoes with toys in them the minute she is big enough for them. Ds gets any trainers he likes provided they aren't stupidly expensive.
