WHY WHY WHY are shoes for little girls so VILE?

Have been looking for shoes for dd2 (aged 2). Everything pink and shiny or embellished with twee hearts/ribbons. Also preponderance of suede/nubuck to ensure they'll be trashed after five minutes. Why? Do people actually like this stuff?

My DSs always choose the vilest, most hideous shoes known to man. BUT when they are complaining about having to put their shoes on, I have ammunition "What, you don;t want to wear the shoes that YOU were so insistent on having?"

Same with clothes. I will buy the terrible Spiderman fleece, so long as they wear it and we don;t have ructions in the winter (My 2 are jumper/coat phobic)

cod speaks some truth but even dd baulked at the hot pink patent horrors thrust upon her last time.

but if you follow cods logic all little girls would be dressed up like some sort of disney princess porn show - and i don't think it is too controlling or precious to object to that.

This morning, DS1 is wearing a bob the builder fleece, brown shorts, blue and orange striped socks and red jelly shoes.

He chose them. He is happy. I have something to remind him of when he is precious about his hair etc. in 10 years time

after a seventies childhood of brogue-ish footwear I actively seek out the sparkle... much of this thread reeks of snobbereeee.

WouldYouCouldYouWithAGoat · 21/09/2008 09:42

i crocheted dd a gorgeous bolero - she won't wear it cos 'people will laugh at her' she is wise beyond her years.

and she nearlly passed out when my mum bought her dora the explorer pjs. she has never even seen dora the explorer but knows it is the ultimate in cool.

DS1 has worn the same pair of Buzz Lightyear trousers for the last few weeks. If it means we get out of the house with min of fuss, so be it. (They are being washed though today. They stink)

Who am I to stifle his fashion sense?

Lol - DS1 went to bed for a few weeks last year with a tupperware pot. No idea why.

My parenting mantra is "anything for a quiet life"

loving the nocturnal tupperware/garden stones scenario... my DD also squirrels little random objects under her pillow at night-time. Items include- a coin collection, her horse pen, a set of keys and a photo album.

Have never had a problem buying DD pretty simple, nfncy black school shoes. Lots available in our independent shoe shops.

As for fancy weekend shops - DD likes the pink and sparkly. But then she is 6y, and it is she who is wearing them. If you can't where pink and glitter at 6y then when can you? Time enough for DD to move into sensble plain shoes when she is older. For now, her choice...

i don't have girls i have boys.
i have never had a shoe buying experience like cod's wher you CHOOSE which shoes you want.

it has ALAYS been 'this is the only shoe that fits' and tso that is what we buy.

however-i don't get the 'no lights in shoes, no toys in shoes' thing that people rant on about.

i would LOVE shoes with lights in the soles! it would be so cool!!!! so if my boys can get them-great! ditton-toys in the ir shoes. they are still black school shoes-just makes shoe buying less of an awful tedious chore.

pgwithnumber3 · 21/09/2008 10:24

I remember DD1 getting her first proper walking shoes, she was a tiny 2.5F and Clarks only had black patent T bars that would fit her. She looked like she was about to start Child Genius School. Didn't look right on a baby. I think they should wear sweet little pink shoes that they love, part of being a child (within reason). Start Rite did do some lovely plain mary janes in very soft pink patent leather a few years back. Although I do love the Start Rite English Classics, they need to be dressed in smocked dresses all the time or pinafores and cardigans for them to look the part.

I suppose. I guess we don't have that situation, but I still would prefer DD to chse - that way i know she would actually want to wear them wen we got home.

DD's school shoes have to be black or red, and sensible school shoes. Who would want to wear them with weekend clothes? So, DD has trainers, party shoes, weekend boots, etc. Not all expensive, esp party shoes. TBH DD prefers shoes to me lol.

themildmannneredjanitor · 21/09/2008 10:25

ds 1 has enormously long narrow feet. nightmare for shoe buying.
