DH is complaining bitterly about my granny knickers - recommendations for cute ones please

I have lost some weight and have to replace my pants because they were literally falling off me. As an interim measure I ordered some from M&S which didn't look too huge on the model but when I tried them on came up to my navel. They're a bit too baggy as well (even though they're a size 16 and the ones I threw out were a 20).

Anyway, DH is not impressed by them and I need to buy some better ones. I have narrow hips and a relatively small flat bum but I have a big saggy tummy So teeny pants would look ridiculous.

Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to find me comfortable cotton pants with adequate tummy coverage that look sexy (or at least don't look like granny pants).

I know Mutt, they're pretty grim aren't they. Like I say I was in need and in a hurry.

Those aren't cotton enough bellavita, but these might be the thing if they come high enough on my tummy.

Right, DH and I have had a discussion re pants. DH wants cheapish, exciting pants that match my expensive bras and my socks and shoes. "Because that's the whole point isn't it? Everything should match." I think I'm going to have to start chucking away the Sunday supplements.

He is completely sure that I had fabulous pants when we were first going out, but I suspect that it was my 18 year old body that was fabulous [modest emoticon] and the pants were fairly ordinary. At least I don't remember paying all that much attention to my underwear back then. Under pressure he has accepted that if we could produce the pants I had back then they wouldn't look at all the same on my current 41 year old body.

I think I might try those last Next pants and perhaps the M&S Brazilian pants and see how we go. In the meantime I will make an effort to only be seen fully clothed or naked, and not too often naked either.

Not yet Cod, you are so suspicious. He is much too workaholic to have time for an affair.

Although it's fairly common in his industry to be unfaithful, I know of quite a few of his professional friends/acquintances who have been, including one who has a wife in the UK and a girlfriend in each of at least 2 other countries where he works regularly and has property.

OK, I've asked for his phone to check if he's having an affair. He laughed and handed it over. Should I even bother checking it? (He is definitely not, he's not the type.)

Mutt, he says he doesn't know what he wants in the way of exciting pants, just not the ones I'm currently wearing. He says that he realises that I'm not 18 anymore and it's the me that I currently am that he wants, just not in these pants.

Not very helpful really.

Oh, and I already asked him the question about his pants matching his socks, but apparently it doesn't apply to men. It wouldn't be macho to worry about whether things match or not, apart from co-ordinating tie, shirt and suit obviously.

OP posts:
bran · 24/08/2008 22:11

I think I'll have to order a few and model them, it's hard for a man to look at a pair of pants on a size 0 model and imagine how they will look on his not size 0 wife.

The phone is clear Cod. There was only a week's worth of texts on there, mostly to and from me. Only two other women send messages, one is his office manager and the other was looking for a job (part of what his company does is recruitment). Are you still suspicious or can I leave the poor chap to his work?

these are fantastic and come in all the colours under the sun. i have them in black and orange!

bran · 24/08/2008 22:28

They're very cute sophable, but they're not cotton. These ones could be what I'm looking for, depending on how they fit. They are also lovely in black and peach.

HaventSleptForAYear · 25/08/2008 14:12

Yes they are cute (bran)

Although I find lower-cut ones MORE flattering than cover your tummy ones.

HAve to say I agree with your DH that the ones you bought are definitely granny.

ANYTHING else is going to be an improvement!

Good luck (and keep us posted!)

Matching knickers look nice but unless you pay shed loads they are often made of polyester. Thongs are hideous. Always have been. Always will be. Only women who are going to be put through photoshop should even think about them. And even then, they're still pretty terrible.

bran · 25/08/2008 14:48

Righty-ho, I have ordered some of the La Senza knickers from my previous post, and a couple of pairs of M&S Brazilian style to try. Hopefully some of them will hit the spot.

I've also done some intensive psychological probing on DH to get to the bottom of the matching bra and pants issue. It turns out that until recently all my bras were white/cream, skintone or black as were all my pants. Then 4 or 5 years ago I started buying coloured bras but my pants stayed neutral so in DH's eyes they no longer matched. Also he admitted that he gets unreasonably annoyed if he sees me dressing/undressing/catches a glimpse of bra strap and my bra clashes with my top. He's not artistic in the slightest so neither he nor I can understand why he's so irrational about bras clashing with tops. I suspect his straight-laced Malaysian upbringing leads him to equate coloured underwear with overt sluttiness or something unless it's done very tastefully to match outer clothes.

OP posts:
bran · 25/08/2008 14:49

I think as I am dropping a bra size anyway I will stick with neutrals until my weight stabilises and then deal with the knotty issue of getting cotton pants to match my (new) gorgeous bras.

Blondilocks · 25/08/2008 19:26

Perhaps you just tell him it's a ridiculous idea & then get a matching set on the sly to surprise him?!

I think I've made a mistake by always trying to wear matching sets when I see my OH - if not the exact match, at least the same colour. Hopefully he'll not be too disappointed when we end up living together as I usually am far from matching!

I got some really comfy underwear in Triumph - think they were sloggi. Really comfy shorts & a bra, which come in pretty colours.

I think perhaps it's the colours that make them a bit more attractive? I have to wear white knickers to work & hate them, but have the same knickers in black & feel a lot more sexy in those!

bran · 25/08/2008 20:10

Do you know what? I've just had an astonishing flash of brilliance, I should dye my pants. Everytime I buy a new bra I should buy a pack of (non-grannyish) white knickers and a matching colour of those dye things that you throw in the washing machine.

OP posts:
bran · 28/08/2008 22:17

If anyone is still interested I have received my Brazilian knickers from M&S and they are surprisingly comfy with reasonable tummy coverage and a rather rakish cut across the bum. They are trimmed with stretchy lace and there is no VPL at all, which is good. They do come up large (perhaps because I have relatively narrow hips) so I will be ordering a size smaller in future.

OP posts:
piratecat · 28/08/2008 22:23

bran were the ones you ordered the £5 for a pack ones? Only I had a look at them in m&S yesterday and they were ginornous, when they were supposed to be a bog standard normal bikini style.I was really shocked at how baggy the ass area was, and how pathetically thin they were.

Yrs back they did NICE pack of pants, ones with a bit of quality, even in their cheapest range.

bran · 28/08/2008 22:30

No, the Brazilian ones were £4 each or 3 for £10. The granny ones that DH took a dislike to were about £5 a pack I think, and they were also quite big for the size.

OP posts:
piratecat · 28/08/2008 22:35

ah can see the brazillian ones are not thepack ones.

the ones you ordered were too grannyish, but i swear their ordinary ones were huge too, maybe i was looking at the high leg ones not bikini style.

i bit the bullet and bought a selection of 3 for a tenner ones, a while back, well about 2 yrs back.

They were more the hipster/low styles. I am about your size with a belly. my mum wears high legs but they look ridiculous on me for some reason!!

bran · 29/08/2008 11:13

Well the Brazilian ones got DH's approval (I'm sure you'll all be relieved to hear it). There's no getting away from the fact that they would look much better on a flat, tanned tummy but they don't make my tummy look any worse than it does naked.

I got the La Senza ones this morning and they weren't as good. Tummy coverage was ok and the frill is sweet, but they are weirdly low-rise at the back giving a slight builder's bum effect. Also the edge is quite bulky so there is definite VPL. I think they would be ok under something heavy though, like low-rise jeans. They are definitely not comfy though as I could feel all the edges, for instance when I sit I can feel the edge dig in between the seat and my bum.

I agree that high legs are not good if you have any degree of tummy-sag as they expose the sag at the sides. [yeuch emoticon]
