What do you really think of scruffy friends?

  • My hair is permanently wavy and tatty.
  • I'm uber-pale and I don't tan.
  • I don't have much time to iron, so tend to "chance it" with my clothes.
  • Said clothes are generally old, over-tumbled, and my jeans are ripped at the back from walking on them (I'm short)
  • I don't have matching accessories, bags, etc
  • I don't dress very feminine or stylish, but tend to go for classic things like dark tops and jeans or black trousers.
  • I still look like a student.

My (mostly childless) friends constantly look glamorous, made up, straightened, tanned, in accessorised outfits with lovely haircuts, and I feel like a tatty minger next to them. I tend to look overdressed when I do attempt to smarten up as I can't get the balance right.

Should I be trying to fight against the scruffy hippy I seem to have become, or should I just accept that not everyone is the glamorous and organised type, and just accept who I am?

What do you really think of your scruffy friends? And don't be PC, I want the truth!

actually, my self esteem is often lowered by too much preening.

Too much looking in the mirror makes me feel a bit odd. i prefer the 'wash and go' effect. I feel freer, less like a product.

At my happiest, i picture myself running through a field in something flowing and hippyish, devil may care. My least happy time was when i was stuck in a showy office all day, having to worry about my looks 'oh my god what am i gonna wear.

I'm moving to the country in about 5 weeks, and i'm looking forward to being as free and outdoorsy and unkempt as possible

in my imagination i'm felicity kendal in 'the good life' or i will be soon

Nothing, I'm the scruffiest person I know!

It's not unusual for me to wear clothes until they are literally falling apart or incredibly faded.

It bothers me for a bit, but then I forget it about it weeks on end.

Part of my problem is not buying ahead or knowing what suits me so I lose interest. But I will be buying some new clothes for autumn soon.

violentviolet, you have just described me. I don't think my friends mind too much though, I make them look good.

Aefondkiss · 21/07/2008 20:47

good justification there kewcumber.

I agree with with totalmisfit and all the defenders of scruffdom.

Mercy · 21/07/2008 20:52

The Felicity Kendal character was positively stylish compared to me

bogie · 21/07/2008 20:55

OP are you me!! I am just the same but I have given up trying to match childless friends who have all the latest clothes and can afford to go to the hairdresses once a month.
