What do you really think of scruffy friends?

  • My hair is permanently wavy and tatty.
  • I'm uber-pale and I don't tan.
  • I don't have much time to iron, so tend to "chance it" with my clothes.
  • Said clothes are generally old, over-tumbled, and my jeans are ripped at the back from walking on them (I'm short)
  • I don't have matching accessories, bags, etc
  • I don't dress very feminine or stylish, but tend to go for classic things like dark tops and jeans or black trousers.
  • I still look like a student.

My (mostly childless) friends constantly look glamorous, made up, straightened, tanned, in accessorised outfits with lovely haircuts, and I feel like a tatty minger next to them. I tend to look overdressed when I do attempt to smarten up as I can't get the balance right.

Should I be trying to fight against the scruffy hippy I seem to have become, or should I just accept that not everyone is the glamorous and organised type, and just accept who I am?

What do you really think of your scruffy friends? And don't be PC, I want the truth!

oh joolyjoo, I'm an ex goth too! I wonder if a pattern is emerging... any other ex goths on the thread? Out with it!!

'Being scruffy is the new black' - lol VV.

Cashncarry · 19/07/2008 00:35

LOL at ex-goth

Couldn't leave the house without black leggings, black t-shirt, big black mac complemented with heavy black make up and black nails

Lucky if I remember to change out of my PJs these days let alone apply any make up!

Joolyjoolyjoo · 19/07/2008 00:49

Aha- so that's it! Old goths never die...they just opt out!

violentviolet · 19/07/2008 00:50

lol, cashncarry, that's three then, a definite pattern!

Oh I fucking LOVE my pyjamas. I swear to god if I'm staing in I only take them off half an hour before dp gets home, then half an hour after he gets home I say I'm uncomfortable and go stick them back on! I'm sure he's onto me.

(For "my pyjamas", read: Dp's christmas homer simpson shorts, and an old faded tshirt with a bunny on)

I'm a dedicated sort of slob, me.

pmsl at changing before DP gets in. I used to get up in the morning before then DP (now DH) brush my teeth, apply make up and carefully get back into bed. Also never ever broke wind in front of him before marriage.

Oh, how times have changed

My current pjs of choice are - an old black tshirt which is so faded it's grey and brown and a pair of trackie bottoms which are so frayed between the legs that I don't have to take them off to have a wee

Cashncarry · 19/07/2008 00:58

God - just realised that makes me sound disgusting I DO take them off before I have a wee and they ARE clean - honestly!

Absolutley shite. Why can't they sort themselves out? Are they slags or what

violentviolet · 19/07/2008 01:04

lol at cashncarry's pissy pants!

I didn't fart in front of dp for months either. I nearly combusted.

I bet our dp's wish we'd come with a receipt! lol

Goodnight, scruffies and glamourpusses. xxx

Farking hell Kazzia, you call your friends "slags"? Assume you haven't got that many then!

Cashncarry · 19/07/2008 01:05

G'night VV - pmsl at my pissy pants

littlewoman · 19/07/2008 01:10

I find people who don't really care much about their appearance are usually pretty interesting people. Not superficial.

Slags - obviously but not superficial.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 19/07/2008 01:14

Interesting post, Kazzia. Let's asume for a moment you are not just trying to be inflamatory- why do you care so much how your friends dress? do you feel it reflects on your own ability to impress the many influential people at toddler group, or is it just that you prefer to be seen with similar superficial clones?

Joolyjoolyjoo · 19/07/2008 01:15

Sory- assume and inflammatory

littlewoman · 19/07/2008 01:23

Never apologise for spelling mistakes, JJJ. It's a sign of weakness

S1ur · 19/07/2008 01:23

Jooley and LW hang a teeny bit.

I am NOT defending K's post, slightly bonkers tbh and rude I grant you.

But take the high ground here. My lovely scruffs (of which I include myself sometimes) are as I say amazing women.

And as I say I don't care how they look, I am more in awe feel indequate of their parenting or talents or wit or intelleigence and so on.

Point being, please don't make this into a 'if you straighten your hair or give a shit about clothes you are only a vacuous, unintelligent muppet'

I realise you are not doing this, but I sense it could go that way

Joolyjoolyjoo · 19/07/2008 01:28

Slur, many of my dear friends are gorgeous fashion icons, but I like to think that they are intelligent and caring enough to take me the way I am. I have no problem with people being better dressed and turned out than me (let's face it, I'd have problems with the majority of the population if I did!), just that those of us with different priorities shouldn't necessarily be deemed slags (although some of us may be )

littlewoman · 19/07/2008 01:33

I thought Kazzia was probably joking, tbh, Slur. That's why I made a joke of it.

(Oo er, LW wishes she had gone to bed ten minutes ago, like she said she was going to )

S1ur · 19/07/2008 01:34

Yes def no slags here, seriously though, certainly I wouldn't even consider my scruffy friends as that!

I just didn't want the fabulous, less groomed folk start on the superficial clones thang. Though ffs she did ask for it!

S1ur · 19/07/2008 01:36

I am v light hearted about this, seem to be coming across slightly more serious than I intended

I think all women are both scruffs and glamourpusses when they feel like it. Damn right.

I came home today and kicked off my heeled boots, constrictive bra, change my skinnies for trackies and got pissed.

and I'm an ex-goth

Joolyjoolyjoo · 19/07/2008 01:41

No, I am genuinely in awe of the better groomed- there but for the grime and goo go I, and all that! Just doesn't suit the lifestyle I now find myself in, but I do admire my friends with their matching clothes and accessories and often make resolutions to do better! But the kind of people who judge their friends on what they wear and find them lacking must have some need to be seen a certain way, and only want to hang out with people prepared to fit into their stewreotype, hence the clones comment! my lovely friends don't seem to care that I could give Worzel Gummidge a run for his money- or maybe I just make them look even better!!

Joolyjoolyjoo · 19/07/2008 01:42

Typos galore tonight- in my defence the heating has gone off, and my fingers are cold!!!

littlewoman · 19/07/2008 01:42

Hexactly Slur. Last night I looked gorgeous (ish); tonight I look like the wreck of the Titanic. I don't care who likes and doesn't like anything. Certainly not about to start a punch up

littlewoman · 19/07/2008 01:45

JJJ get some fingerless gloves on, to complete your uber-scruff ensemble .
