The advice I have read a lot is to spend money on the base. At the moment I am wearing Aldi tinted moisturiser for my base that cost less than £5 if I remember right.

I very rarely wear make up but if I do I never take it off before bed ,I wash it off the next morning in the shower .
have great skin, always have & I’m almost 48

Great thread OP! As mentioned by @seanconneryseyebrow I too use coconut oil as a moisturizer. I have very dry, easily irritated, peri menopausal skin and this seems to calm it down, stop itching and not irritate my eyes.

Those of you that use soap is it a special face soap?

ABZombie · Yesterday 16:50

I wash my hair every day without fail. In fact, sometimes I wash it twice a day.

PearPeer · Yesterday 17:01

I don't take my eye make up off. Well very occasionally, if I am giving myself a facial or such, but not every night. And sometimes I wear quite a lot. Removing it would interfere with my false eyelashes, but the main reason is that I am convinced that messing about with and dragging your delicate eye skin around with a cloth/cotton wool/whatever is more damaging than sleeping with some purposely-made powder on your skin.

If I do remove it, I use coconut oil. Cuts through everything, doesn't sting, is kind to your eyes. And costs a fraction of all the hyped-up ones I've seen (and used to try to use).

I've stopped having highlights in 2019 , and my hair is in the best condition, had highlights from in my early 20s I'm now 66, my hair is dark mousey colour, was blonde child went dark in early teens, I have a few greys hairs now which I don't mind, my friend says you should go lighter as you get older not darker, but it' the colour nature gave me so it should suit me.

I rarely take my make up off at night. Not that I wear loads. Otherwise I look after myself and have fairly good skin.

I follow hardly any nowadays.
My skin is best when I wash with cold plain water and slap on some oil of olay
I don't wear sunscreen as I sweat it all off anyway.
I very rarely go to a hairdresser and never blow dry my hair.
I never wear make up and like the tone of my skin to look natural, not one sheet colour.
My look is very natural and healthy and I look good for close to 60. People are always genuinely surprised when I tell them my age!

Ah come on now! Everyone on MN claims that!
I'm sure you look good and it's great you're so confident, but people are never going to say "you look old for 60"!

Summerlovingtheraspberries · Yesterday 17:45

I don’t dye my hair and it’s in good condition. Much better condition than when I dyed it.

Same here, for more than 40 years, my hair is in great condition.

Great name @SoapCollector ! Admittedly I like a nice soap - triple milled stuff from Toasted Crumpet or National Trust shops, or if I run out I use Pears, but otherwise nothing special.

I use the fragrance free soap from www.frenchsoaps.co.uk

where do you get coconut oil from? Think I need to try this!

CordwainerBird · Yesterday 19:20

I wash my face and body with bar soap, it’s grand

JuRoo · Yesterday 19:27

All of the products really, full of chemicals & microplastics & various other hormone disruptors. A little Almond oil & filtered water on a cotton pad is wonderful cleanser & moisturiser all in one. Sunscreen & body washes are the worst. Sunscreen is mostly plastics & body washes are chemicals that won’t rinse off. Yuk

Sssshhhh!!!
Let me enjoy the flattery and not ask too many questions 😂

ohtowinthelottery · Yesterday 19:35

I don't really know what the beauty advice is! I wash my face with soap and water and use either Nivea or Simple moisturiser and that's it. I'm 62 and think I have a lot better skin than many people of my age.

Wow only a few greys at nearly 70! Are your family the same? I’m 30s and have loads. I don’t want to go grey yet but it feels like such a long (hopefully) time ahead of me to keep dyeing it 😮‍💨

My skincare is a shambles and would like it to be better but genetically do have pretty good skin (could be better does get a bit dry sometimes). Don’t drink enough water and often don’t get round to taking my makeup off. Moisturise in the morning but not at night.

Fizbosshoes · Yesterday 19:41

Im too lazy to follow most advice, im shit at drinking water (its not unusual to have a day when I drink no water at all) and ive only recently started moisturising- and I still dont remember to every day.

I do.always take make up off before going to bed though! 😃

Me too! (But mostly because I am lazy) my skin is totally fine it’s never caused a problem.

ExtraHotDoubleShot · Yesterday 19:46

I just don’t do a lot of it.

Don’t get my nails done. Don’t like fake lashes. Hate the jabs, would never do that. Don’t want an 8 step skincare routine. Think centre partings and that greasy tight ponytail look aren’t for me.

I’m lucky though I have good skin and not a single grey hair yet (mid 30s). I get my brows tinted and waxed once a month, and my hair highlighted and cut every 6 months or so, but that’s it. Aside from that it’s just mascara and Bare Minerals foundation stick which I then take off in the evenings. Moisturiser is Nivea Soft.

TheOGCCL · Yesterday 19:56

I'm another one terrible for drinking water but my skin is pretty luminous. Maybe it helps I don't drink alcohol.
I also pick at spots and think it helps them go away faster. I don't really get scarring.

Otherwise I do follow the rules.

Coconut oil as a body moisturiser. Hm.

Well I once stayed in the guest room at my parent's. Mum didn't change the sheets as they'd only had me in them and I was due to stay again in a week's time.

I had had a bath, slathered myself in coconut oil and gone to bed.

Half way through the week, the bedroom began to pong.

It had rubbed off me onto the sheets, and gone off! 😆

Not pleasant, and I was not popular!

Am I the only one?

I usually buy it from a supermarket, cooking oil shelf. I also use it as a face cleanser, using damp cotton wool to remove it. It's useful on my hair too (dry curly hair here!).

Thanks for the soap recommendation.

I've never had this! Maybe the oil was close to it's expiry date?

Allili26 · Yesterday 20:18

I'm in my 50s. I don't dye my hair and for makeup I use a tinted moisturiser and a little foundation on my cheeks because I have some broken capillaries. I never wear any kind of eye makeup or lipstick and I've never worn nail polish. It's not that I'm against beauty routines, but I find clutter very overwhelming. Even the idea of having a bag of makeup or a shelf of beauty products stresses me out. I'm like that in other areas of my life as well.

PearPeer · Yesterday 20:21

Possibly, but I don't think so? I still used it up until it had ran out without further ado (albeit only as a make-up remover and for cooking)!
