What conventional beauty advice don’t you follow?

The advice I have read a lot is to spend money on the base. At the moment I am wearing Aldi tinted moisturiser for my base that cost less than £5 if I remember right.

Never used toner, never have, never will. Total waste of money in my opinion, and a marketing ploy to make women buy more crap they don’t need.
And I have great skin Grin

I don't think I really know what toner is meant to do 😂

I used toner in brief spurts of trying to follow the “rules” in my youth forty years ago.
Think the marketing was it ensured all cleanser was removed and shrunk your pores.
Probably utter crap.

OsfameronTanamoril · Yesterday 08:37

I didn't use moisturiser until past 50. Didn't need it.

Frrrout · Yesterday 08:43

Yes toner was all ‘close your pores ready for moisturising’ to my understanding. Even my 14 year old self when I learned this thought it was a pile of utter nonsense, because why would I want my moisturiser to just sit on my skin?? Seems like it really should penetrate it somewhat.

WrinklesShminkles · Yesterday 10:55

"Face wipes don't work/are bad for your skin." Yes they do, especially as a first step to get makeup off. (Why would a tissue soaked in cleanser not cleanse the skin?) Have used them for years and my skin is in good shape.

Singasonga · Yesterday 11:01

Mine used to be not tanning when everyone was terrified of looking “pasty,” and the only way to look healthy was to have “a nice bit of colour.” As a burn & peel girl, it was a never a beauty standard I could meet prior to the invention of fake tan.

As a result, I fell into using daily sunscreen early in life. It’s turned out pretty well for me!

"Wear sunscreen every day" - no thanks. I live in a traditionally overcast, rainy corner of nw Europe
"Embrace tret and retinol" - i get the impression this thins my skin, actually, and that its often promoted by women who also use botox and fillers

I use tret but no botox or fillers ever!

SatinHeart · Yesterday 11:05

I don't use cleaner or toner. I wash my face with dove soap and then use moisturiser.

AtIusvue · Yesterday 11:12
  • Don’t wax or pluck brows after age of 35 as I think it can make women look hard. So to using pencil to fill in etc. There’s nothing wrong with a natural brow and it helps softens the face, particularly when you’re showing signs elsewhere. Clean crisp brows only work on a young face.

UV still comes through the clouds even if you’re not visibly tanning, but there’s no rule saying you have to care about it! Like I said, my extra caution has ended up serving me well without any beauty industry input. I was at least a decade ahead of the advice on daily sunscreen.

DramaAlpaca · Yesterday 12:13

I'm so low maintenance I pretty much ignore all conventional beauty advice. I can't even be bothered to use moisturiser as I don't think I need it.

The only thing I do is drink loads of water and keep out of the sun, and it's probably because the reason I've good skin for a 62 year old.

seanconneryseyebrow · Yesterday 12:15

My skin care routine is soap and water - and coconut oil. Anything else I’m a huge rashy mess. I’m 52 and get told I look younger all the time (probably bollox).

seanconneryseyebrow · Yesterday 12:16

I rarely drink water. Think it’s been debunked the
‘drink a gallon a day’ think it’s been proven that you only need to drink what you need . Anymore is pointless

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · Yesterday 12:27

I do nothing to my face but wash it with soap and water, and use a moderately priced Nivea moisturiser with SPF on the morning, and BioOil at night. I am frequently mistaken for being 10 years younger than I really am.

PauliesWalnuts · Yesterday 12:27

I wash my face with ordinary soap and water and don’t moisturise. My face is very oily and any moisturiser I’ve used makes my face look like an oil slick; even when I use products for oily skin. So I just don’t bother. I’m very fair and stay out of the sun because I can’t tan, so my skin is in decent nick for mid-50s.

FindingMeno · Yesterday 12:44

I follow hardly any nowadays.
My skin is best when I wash with cold plain water and slap on some oil of olay
I don't wear sunscreen as I sweat it all off anyway.
I very rarely go to a hairdresser and never blow dry my hair.
I never wear make up and like the tone of my skin to look natural, not one sheet colour.
My look is very natural and healthy and I look good for close to 60. People are always genuinely surprised when I tell them my age!

FindingMeno · Yesterday 12:47

I went for a facial a few years ago ( it was a present and the only facial I've ever had)
The beautician said I have normal skin with no congestion, and that I was very lucky.
I put it down to not mucking around with lots of crap that blocks your pores.

Alwaysinacrisis · Yesterday 13:53

I recently stopped colouring my hair. I just turned 40, I'm probably 50% grey and I just can't be bothered any more. My hair dresser told me I was too young to go grey but I'm obviously not, because I am! It might age me but I don't care.

Fernsarethebestplants · Yesterday 13:56

The more products the better- nope.

My skin always goes wrong when I deviate from wash with cleanser and moisturise with one product.

Serums, toners, step-by-step programmes- my skin hates them.

I am also sceptical about anything that increases cell turnover and seems to cause irritation very easily.

I also use cleansing wipes though, so what would I know?

kiakoa · Yesterday 14:00

I like toner but alcohol free, I don’t cleanse my face in the morning & don’t double cleanse at night.

A lot of how good your skin is is down to genetics as opposed to diet, products etc.

EmmaB1309 · Yesterday 15:50

Most of it to be honest, I think the vast majority of it is a money making ploy. I’ve only ever cleansed and moisturised, and even moisturising I didn’t really start doing religiously till I was in my forties. My skin has always been oily and I couldn’t find one that didn’t just leave me shiny. My skin is drier now so I use Clinique. I’m 47 and always get told I look young so 🤷‍♀️.
I really should be drinking more water.

Summerhillsquare · Yesterday 16:21

Double cleansing is the biggest scam ever! And toning. And concealer, use a dab of foundation.
