Upper lip hair removal

SpeedOfLife · Yesterday 15:49

I’m looking for some advice on upper lip hair removal for my DD who is 13. She has beautiful dark hair and pale skin.
She wasn’t keen on trying the bleach when I suggested it. What’s the best way to keep it looking good all the time, I don’t want the regrowth to be worse than before she started removing it.

Thanks, going to avoid the bleach!

I use my epilator, it’s a tad ouchy but takes a minute or so to. Quick and effective.

I use an IPL (Philips Lumea) with the facial adapter on my upper lip and it works well. I have dark (but greying), very fine hair, and pale, freckled skin. For me, it doesn't get rid of absolutely all the hair on my upper lip, but it reduces it down from dark wires to a slightly heavier peach fuzz that I don't think is particularly noticeable.

However, the Philips Lumea is not recommended for anyone under the age of 18. But that's because it's not been tested on children, rather than a specific risk being identified, as far as I'm aware.

I recomend those twizzler stick things

Quick, easy, cheap, don't have to leave the house. Hurts though.

Me too. They’re great, and quite satisfying to use.

She’s old enough for waxing or threading.
I think shaving leaves blunt ends that appear darker, but the little facial razors are easy.

I have had this problem since school, and was shaving for around 30 years. Then got electrolysis. Never looked back

Gifteddeposit2008 · Yesterday 19:17

I'd get her waxed or threaded at a salon for the first time as it's always more painful with a full growth, so better if someone experienced does it. I find the Veet facial strips amazing and can't believe how much better wax strips are than they were in the past, so then I would just do regrowth with those.

Is she too young for laser? I don’t know the rules on this but at least it would be permanent

Dunnow1 · Yesterday 19:32

I would get a flawless facial hair remover from Amazon (and I guess Boots etc), it’s easy, quick, painless and can be done regularly in a few minutes so she’ll be able to keep up with it herself.

Eye brow and face trimmer works for step daughter, very dark hair on olive skin
and works perfect, no shaving no tweezers no pain no waxing every few days and don't need to wait for hair to grow to wax. Works on chin hair too https://www.debenhams.com/product/wahl-precision-eyebrow-trimmer-kitydd01403?colour=rose+gold&size=One+Size&gclsrc=aw.ds&gadsource=1&gadcampaignid=23624907486&gbraid=0AAAAABevdS78uXKy9rvKf4dq2mIHYqeui&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIw-Cm6pKwlwMVZJtQBh3ZaQhsEAkYAyABEgKucvDBwE

Just buzz over painlessno cuts no shaving needed

Genevie82 · Yesterday 20:21

Facial epilator - great for facial hair but depends on her pain threshold at her age.

YourWatermelonship · Yesterday 20:25

I have very pale olive skin and bleaching hits the sweet spot of hair becoming invisible against my skin. Waxing (at salons or at home) doesn't work for me, it just breaks the hairs

I have a Philips lumea which I have used elsewhere in my body with mixed results (pretty good for legs, minor improvement in bikini area and I swear it's made my underarm hair worse). So I wouldn't use it on my face.

Isobel201 · Yesterday 20:26

I use a manual razor on my facial hair and upper lip in the shower once a week.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · Yesterday 20:29

If they do laser on under 18s and you can afford it, do that. She has the perfect colouring for it. Proper laser at a medical clinic, not the IPL a lot of beauty salons use. Then a home IPL machine for top ups.

Electrolysis is the other permanent option, and is definitely possible for a 13 year old. But it takes much, much longer - so although it's considerably cheaper per session it may well not be cheaper overall - and it hurts.

Bleaching plus trimming is near painless (as long as you adhere to the specified bleach time) but needs redoing everything couple of weeks minimum and doesn't deal with the cause. Either one without the other leaves either roots or hairs visible.

Waxing or epilating needs you to wait for regrowth, and can leave a lingering redness, rash or spots. If trying it, start in the holidays when she doesn't need to see anyone for a few days. Needs to be combined with a good exfoliating routine to avoid ingrowing hairs.

Get a wire spring for facial hair/threader from Amazon ( tuto on youtube)
easy, cheap, no chemicals

Regrowth after waxing is OK imo...because its been pulled from the root a new hair has to grow but it comes out tapered rather than blunt like it does with shaving. Ive also heard that every time you pull a hair out by the root, the next time it goes it keeps getting weaker...no idea how correct that is though but it makes sense.

Unfortunately as someone who was dark haired, waxing makes bugger all difference to how quickly, thickly or darkly the hair grows! When I was in my teens I went to a salon for bleaching, then we did it at home. As a student I used hair remover cream, but now I prefer wax strips and tweeze the odd hair the wax doesn't get.

Babybirdmum · Yesterday 21:06

@motherofreptiles @SpeedOfLife after years of bleaching mine (which was a faff, often stung and didn’t work properly anyway) now I just pluck the hairs with a tweezer when I do my eyebrows. I found it to be the simplest way of removing the hair and the quickest and they definitely don’t grow back thicker.

EatingTillIDie · Yesterday 21:08

Had dark upper hair lip as a teen. Used jolen. Then moved to tweezing and after 30 years the hairs got very dark and stubborn. I would pluck daily. It made me very anxious and introverted. Wish I had done laser treatment years ago. I go to laserclinics uk and it takes 5 mins. I bought a bundle for 50% off and the hair is gone. It will start to feel like fuzz is coming back after a few weeks but it is nowhere near as bad as before and most of it is invisible. I just keep it shaved every few weeks with an electric facial shaver or dermaplaner.. No more thick dark hairs. No more hiding my face. I am free!!!!

Whoops75 · Yesterday 21:15

I used to wax mine but have ended up with fine lines from it, definitely wouldn’t let dd wax anything on her face.
Threading is good but sore
Derma plaining is shaving by another name

I would use a mascara wand to bleach it while it’s fine and look at laser for when she’s older.

Smallestshadow · Yesterday 21:16

Shaving/plucking is the quickest/cheapest/easiest way. It really doesn’t make hair grow back thicker- that’s nonsense and a physical impossibility.

Witchlite · Yesterday 21:51

Waxing causes ingrowing hairs. They can be seen through pale skin. Bleach irritates skin and shaving causes unsightly stubble.

If you have the money pale skin and dark hair are perfect for IPL or laser treatment.

if they had been around when I was younger, they would have saved me years of pancake makeup, thick tights and long sleeves.

philips Lumea worked well for me, but do look into it as there may be age restrictions.

Fast800goingforit · Yesterday 21:55

I'm probably going to jinx myself here, but I have never had an ingrowing hair from waxing my upper lip. Exfoliation helps if you are prone to ingrowing hair.

Franpie · Yesterday 22:01

Get it threaded. No need to worry about regrowth as you need very little growth for threading, unlike waxing. My DD goes and gets her brows and upper lip done about every 2 weeks and pays £8. She’s been doing it since she was 14.
