Is a short blunt bob cool or frumpy?

I am 52, oval shaped face, and have fine blonde highlighted hair.

I am also fancying a change from my long and slightly wavy, no fringe, hair and have been eyeing up a 'Scandi bob.'

However, can it still look cool on someone my age or will I look like I am doing the middle-aged meno haircut as mine now looks too straggly too long...?

Sorry I've not posted a pic, I know too many other MN users in RL!

Cool (except when one little bit of it flicks out - grr).

OriginalUsername2 · 08/10/2026 19:58

I googled scandi bob on 50 year old, they all look great. Go for it! It will be so much easier to get some oomf in it at a shorter length too.

HoldMyWine · 08/10/2026 20:00

the bob is classic, always looks cool.

QuirkyHorse · 08/10/2026 20:01

A cool classic.
I always admire a brilliantly cut bob. Not graduated though, they aren't a good look on anyone.

sleeppleasesoon · 08/10/2026 20:04

I think it looks cool if the ends are strait and not blow dried under.

DramaAlpaca · 08/10/2026 20:08

Cool, I hope!

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 08/10/2026 20:10

Anything is cool as long as the wearer feels the vibe of cool. Feel frumpy and you’re fucked 🤣

ElleintheWoods · 08/10/2026 21:17

If it is specifically a Scandi bob, with more French girl vibes, not polished but messy, I am going for cool.

If it is anything like the 2000s Victoria Beckham bob, with sleek hair... No. Some older ladies at work have it and it looks very aging, and also a bit like a wig on them. Because it's quite sleek and polished, it brings out face/ skin structure more, and it really ages them.

OsfameronTanamoril · 08/10/2026 21:20

A choppy bob- Italian or French- is cool now, I think.
I just had my wavy hair cut and the stylist gave me a helmet rather than the choppy bob I asked for. Am fuming.

Edit: just Googled Scandi bob. It's cool and exactly what I wanted. But got something else!

BCBird · 08/10/2026 21:24

Looove a bob. Not suitable for my hair unfortunately. Go for it

Prangie · 09/10/2026 08:53

Thank you!!
This is just what I wanted to hear! I certainly want it blunt cut, rather than sensibly layered. Now I just need to ponder a fringe (and if so, what kind!)
Exciting!

As someone who has had many bobs over the years I would say that, crucially, do not let them cut it any shorter than chin length. Also take advice re the layers. If I had mine blunt cut I would end up with a triangle as my hair is too thick for that.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 09/10/2026 11:41

I am the same age as you, and have had a bob in one form or another for most of the past 30 odd years. I am not cool, so unsurprisingly, my bob is not. I have seen many women of my age who wear a bob in an edgy manner. So (carefully removing the fence splinters from my backside), it depends on you.

GoodLordMother · 09/10/2026 11:47

Definitely go for it but make sure your hairdresser knows exactly what you mean, be very very clear and show lots of pictures. I wanted this a few years ago, but I think my hairdresser went on auto pilot and gave me the Victoria Beckham angled Bob from the 00's! I was devastated I had that cut in the 00's when Victoria had it I certainly didn't want something so dated 15 years later!

Also make sure you know how to style it, what are the best products for your hair, get tips from your hairdresser as with fine hair a bob can look very limp and dowdy at any age.

Have fun with it!

I'm 53, blonde with dark roots (intentional) and recently went for a French bob and I get so many compliments. For some reason, now that it's shorter I feel less self conscious if I ruffle my hair and haven't got a mirror. ie, if its really windy or I have pushed my glasses back on my hair. I just run a hand through and feel OK. When it was longer I was always grabbing a mirror to make sure I didn't have tufts sticking up!

QuaintGreenFawn · 09/10/2026 11:52

I have similar hair type. If you have time to style it each day (I like the slight wave put in with straighteners) then go for it. If you don't then it can look very flat.
I'm growing mine out as got annoyed with not being able to tie it up (eg for the gym or the days where it ideally needs washing but could get away with putting it up)

Alwaysrushingabout · 09/10/2026 11:55

I think most people can wear it. I had that type of cut when I was a student and it looked great but I couldn’t wear it now as don’t have the jawline or neck.

Prangie · 09/10/2026 16:57

This is all really helpful, thank you!

My hairdresser is fabulous and I have been going to her for a long time now so will trust her opinion, but still take plenty of pictures.

This! You have to have the ‘cool’ scandi dress style to go with it, which at 50+ is easy enough to achieve

One step closer to the Karen cut. Be careful

Peakyblinder18 · Today 02:31

I just had a haircut which is cut from the nape if the neck down along the jaw line at an angle and chopped slightly from the top.
My favourite. It takes years off me and luckily I can manage blow-drying to feel a million dollars.
