Are these rugs outdated?

I’d like a cosy shaggy runner rug for my narrow hallway. I want it to be light coloured and I quite like these classic Moroccan ones but I’m aware this design & pattern has been around for a while, and I’m worried it’ll make my house look dated. The rest of my house is part modern, part vintage/rustic. Eg. Interior brick feature wall, lots of lamps and plants, green walls, hard wood floors, light oak or industrial style furniture with reclaimed wood and black metal. I know I should just get what I like and all that but I’m probably a bit of a snob when it comes to my house decor! I like it to reflect my personality so I really don’t want to get anything that looks dated or unfashionable. I know nothing about rug trends so any tips or suggestions of other types of rug would be appreciated too!

Who decides? If you like the look of something, it’s practical and enhances your life - have it in your home 🤷🏼‍♀️

Lozlegs · 07/10/2026 09:28

They were definitely a trend but if you like them go for it. I think they are simple enough/not statement pieces and will stand the test of time. Unlike for example the trend of red glossy kitchens a few years ago which now just look really dated.

Everyone will judge you OP, you’ll be the talk of your street!

Just joking - I don’t think anyone would even notice such an inoffensive rug, surely!

Lol I know I massively overthink everything about the style of my house! It probably means something worrying about my brain or the way I’m wired 😬

I might wear the middle one with the squiggles down the long sides. Looks nice and light and would make a lovely wrap over some sequinned trousers and a little knitted camisole.

I like the one in the big picture.
One drawback for me would be if it was too shaggy. I have form for rug-tripping. I'd be over on the floor in no time.

These kind of beni ourain rugs are not suitable for a hallway imo. A proper one will have a really deep pile. Its not for heavy traffic or where lots of mud and leaves will be dragged through. Its for a cosy den or similar.
I love thrm though and don't care if theyre dated.
A fake one, not handmade, but regular machine made, plastic materials, or a thin pile is a weak copy and the devils own work.

MyManinCaracas · 07/10/2026 19:39

I think they’re a classic but I would be concerned about tracking in dirt.

GreenEyesMillennial · 07/10/2026 19:42

I have a few jute ones which look good www.oliverbonas.com/homeware/scalloped-jute-runner-rug-200x80cm-384237

FancyKitten · 07/10/2026 19:44

Never really liked them in the first place.

leaderZ · 07/10/2026 19:47

Sorry think it’s passed 2010 ish. Get pastels or camel shades now

What about the shagginess? If I was to get a different style but still shaggy would it still look dated? It’s not for a high traffic area- the hallway is not an entrance hallway

I was expecting something horrific
These are high maintenance but its fairly inoffensive / unremarkable (ie i wouldnt be waiting to get to the car to cackle to my husband about your terrible rugs)

If you like it go for it.

dudsville · 08/10/2026 11:04

I think that given the confidence you may usually have in how you style your home, that this isn't the rug for you. Keep looking until you have the confidence that comes from loving something so much that you don't care - that's the rug that will just work for you.

This is excellent advice and very accurate. If I love something I don’t usually question it. Thanks!

Just get them if you like them, they are very neutral too.

AmberTigerEyes · 10/10/2026 06:47

Your choices are perfectly fine.
