High street fashion is so awful at the moment?

Moonlightfrog · 06/10/2026 15:05

Just been into town. Went to Primark, M&S and Next. I am after a winter dress, but primark had no dresses at all, Next only had 2 casual type dresses (both denim shirt type dress), M&S was all brown and beige and over priced.
I don’t have a huge amount of money to spend on clothes, I have gained a little weight (thanks menopause) and my trousers are a little uncomfortable so I wanted a dress that I could layer and wear with tights and boots as it gets cooler, possibly needle cord in a plain colour. I was hoping to grab something in town whilst shopping with dd but the clothes in the shops are just disappointing.

Are there any good online shops with high street prices?

Before anyone suggests vinted, I have been looking but can’t really find what I am looking for…..I’m not even sure I know what I am looking for.

Next really is awful at the minute unless you want to dress like a pile of dead leaves with glitter on . I really like urban outfitters but it can be quite pricey unless your in store and rake the sale rails

Boden has lots of cord dresses, including in burgundy. https://www.boden.com/collections/womens-dresses

Their search engine is pretty good so you can also look for denim dresses, they also have lots.

I mostly shop on Vinted these days, but I still wear lots of Boden and I get more compliments on their clothes than anything else I wear. Their clothes wash well, and they have lots of dresses with pockets. They have very frequent sales too, I usually wait for things to get discounted - it’s every few weeks.

What is beedkecord please?

It's a typo for needlecord! Corduroy with narrow 'stripes'.

Yes I know what needlecord is, thanks!
I just couldn't work that out! 😁

StylishAndBeautiful · 06/10/2026 21:04

Try the chain shops like New Look. Charity shops are good for pull on pinafores and shirtdresses in needlecord or denim. I wear them a lot.

RaraRachael · 06/10/2026 21:06

There's also a lot of stuff with lace trimmings so you look like you've gone out in your lingerie.

MagdaLenor · 06/10/2026 21:07

I agree with everyone; the shops are full of brown and grey and it's depressing. The days are getting shorter, it's getting colder, but I want to wear colourful and cheerful clothes!
Awful choices.

EmmaB1309 · 06/10/2026 21:08

Agreed. Every top is high necked, cropped or lampshade style, same with jumpers and absolutely no good for any one with a tummy and boobs. All trousers are wide as the Clyde and look ridiculous on anyone who isn’t six feet tall. And don’t even get me started on dresses.

OMG dying at this. Accurate

whythehellnow · 06/10/2026 21:20

John Lewis all the way if you like knitted winter dresses.

Also found some in Zara and Mango, which only work if you’re a size 12 or smaller.

cheeseomelette · 06/10/2026 21:22

Thought exactly this today. Fat face was full of fugly dresses and acrylic knitwear. Mint velvet takes a decent item and ruins it with a naff detail. Next had the clothes of polyester dreams.

marks and Spencer’s is where it’s at for me, along with cos, & other stories and Uniqlo.

I only like Tu at Sainsbury's and M&S for clothes - and Vinted I'm afraid.

I walked around a shopping mall looking in every shop to just try and understand my style, never mind whether I could afford them. Hated it all, universally.

Hate to say it but Tu is my go to too.

An ex legal director boss of mine bought all her work clothes from Tu and looked amazing.

I really can’t fault anything I’ve bought from there lately. From a checked rain jacket with a hood, to dresses, opaque tights. My viral pale yellow with brown polka dots jacket was from there this spring. Barrel leg dark jeans, from Tu.

I do like some but not all stuff I buy from M&S. And then they changed my favourite bra from there. I have had excellent footwear and trainers from there in the past though.

Sainsburys and charity shops is my best buys

And also 'you should never stoop so low as to be fashionable'

To paraphrase the great Parton

Henowner · 06/10/2026 21:33

Toast and charity shops for me, can't bear polyester 🤮

And when I say Toast I mean 2/3 items a year max, I'm not made of money.

I have a lot of ancient clothes which I still wear. Old clothes were made to last, luckily for me!

Moonlightfrog · 06/10/2026 22:00

JustAMinutePeople · 06/10/2026 20:08

But why do you need to buy new?

So many tonnes and tonnes of ‘autumn’ dresses and other items have already been produced and are going to waste. Look second hand. Vinted is awash with autumnal dresses.

I don’t. I said I had looked on vinted but couldn’t find what I was looking for, I shop in charity shops….most of my clothes come from there.

Sea salt , White Stuff , Joe Briwn . I think Roman must have new designers as there stuff looks nice when it pops up on my feed

MouldyOldBaps · 06/10/2026 22:04

Have you tried Seasalt? I haven’t looked this year, but they often have a good choice, especially of cotton fabrics.

Dandeloosha · 06/10/2026 22:12

And everything is in that disgusting, slimy, stretchy, crinkly, ‘fabric’ or that equally disgusting non stretchy slimy, crinkly fabric. I was in George the other day and apart from t-shirts everything was polyester and looked like it would go bobbly in 30 seconds. The men’s section had lovely pure cotton, and merino wool, jumpers in lovely colours that cost less (very reasonable) than the crimplene horrors in the ladies. Unfortunately, I am generous of nork or I’d have snapped them up.

Dandeloosha · 06/10/2026 22:18

Mountain Warehouse do a good range of casual serviceable dresses suitable for layering.

YourTruthorMine · 06/10/2026 22:18

I would have said Joe Browns, but it's a sea of browns & greens at the moment, People with autumn colouring fill your boots

DoreenCorkhill · 06/10/2026 22:22

Yes clothing is hideous currently
Badly made mismatched seams no lining poor threading
Awful fabrics
Polyester recycled shit ! ( Yes I said recycled shit !)
Awful stuff from lower end high st to what was once considered ‘higher’ end .
I have taken to trailing vinted and eBay seeking stuff I previously owned knowing it is good quality .
Bit of charity shopping adding to the mix .
Never had as much disposable income in my life and never had such a lack lustre uninspiring wardrobe .
Wore a 24 year old coat today and a dress that’s at least 10 years old complimented on both .
But really the joy of fashion has gone .

youngmum2000 · 06/10/2026 22:23

you know who’s

Thanks for this, but I refuse to give Tory Johnny any money.

I haven’t looked at their Autumn/Winter collection so can’t comment specifically on that, but over the past two years I’ve bought loads of my Summer holiday dresses from https://www.nobodyschild.com and would definitely recommend.
