What are stylish people wearing on their feet and ankles this winter?

I’ve struggled with this question for ages. What shoes and boots would make me look vaguely current? And talk me through the relationship between trouser length and shoe/trainer/boot style. Please!

I’m quite short so very tall boots aren’t great.

Shoe/sock combos.... I never understand bringing attention to the ankle unless you can meet both these criteria:
• socks are long enough to not expose flesh
• sock colour (roughly) matches either trousers or shoes

So many people have 3 contrasts going on with trousers/socks/shoes and it's just jarring! Even worse if you've got flesh on show! It's particularly bad when people are wearing Mary Jane's and don't observe these rules - it makes them look like they have the legs of a 6 year old.

Would love to k ow the answer to this question too! For my big birthday last year DH bought me some ME+EM knee length slimline boots with a slight heel. I loved them. So soft. But now I see slouchy boots and think I got it entirely wrong!

Loafers are still in fashion, though more elegant and less chunky.

Your footwear choices will depend on where you are wearing them and what with? If work trousers then loafers; sambas; low heeled neat ankle boots.

if skirts or dresses then kitten heel pointed ankle boots (like the noughties).

if jeans then anything goes - trainers; loafers or thicker soles Chelsea boots - or kitten heel fabric ankle boots for dressy events.

So pointy flat or kitten heeled maryjanes ..they look so pretty but with socks? Bare feet? I’m seeing my younger colleagues wearing ankle socks with dresses and skirts but not sure how to pull that off.

Knee high black boots with leggings, and knee- or calf-length skirt. I’m not fashionable, but I’m lovely and comfortable.

This is a great thread as my feet are already cold and I need to prepare for winter.

I’m hoping the rumours are true and slouch boots are back in fashion. I love them! Anonymous Copenhagen have a few in at the moment that I’m debating whether to bite the bullet and get.

Please tell me if you pull the trigger on a pair! i am also tempted/looking for an excuse to do it!

I bought a pair from them last year but I got the size wrong, or the fit at least was just not quite right so back they went... I was on the A Copenhagen site again last night. I am in Ireland and I don’t think they are available retail here yet so return costs rack up quickly - makes me hesitant! Anthropologie’s winter stuff looks great this year too and boots of all sorts.

I really need to get into some shops and actually try these styles on…

A couple of mentions of platform brogues- any recommendations please?

I’m in Ireland too. Dunnes have a few fab pairs of slouchy boots with a kitten heel in tan and beige. Great price point. I’m so sorry I have all my kitten heel velvet and cord boots to the charity shop!!! The velvet were from Dunnes! The cord ones were designer🙁

DramaAlpaca · Today 21:06

Slouchy boots in Dunnes you say?? That's it, I'm popping to Dunnes on the way home from work tomorrow.

Silverbirchleaf · Today 21:21

Salamon XT6 are in my wish list.

Yes! This is what puts me off. My friend bought some from there for her wedding and she has wide feet and said they were so comfortable. I have average feet and found one pair very tight around the little toe. I have bought a couple of pairs from Vinted in different sizes and they’ve been uncomfortable, but I also bought a pair of ankle boots (with a heel, which admittedly I don’t wear heels that much anymore), and they’ve were fine.

Their shoes look so beautiful though, I love the long, slightly welly looking, flat leather boots they have at the moment. I have a similar pair from Jonak so don’t feel I can justify getting something so similar.

In my opinion the footwear options at the moment don’t suit the clothes options.

Tweed, tartan, kilts, pointy toed boots and shoes? It's what was in 1979-82 so it's a second or third return for all of it except the kilts. I'm trotting out some vintage items, sadly no kilts remain at the back of the wardrobe

Same as it’s been for 35 years. Docs

The Jasmina 20 by any chance?? That’s the style I bought and returned last year - they were too wide across the top of my foot and too small in the toe box, I couldn’t figure out if they were too big or too small!

god I would love to be able to buy lots of pairs. I’m always looking the boot that can basically do everything, which is ridiculous!

Oooh thanks good heads up! And I feel your pain, I moved house last year and threw out so much stuff, in fairness most of it I don’t regret - but there have been a few of pairs of shoes and boots I realise I sent packing to the charity shop :(
