Boots for bunions help

I posted on here in summer for advice to get sandals to fit my awful bunions and got some great suggestions so am back, this time looking for everyday winter boots.

I have had bunions since I was a teenager but since getting pregnant last year, the bunion on my right foot has significantly worsened and footwear is extremely uncomfortable - i can't wear any of my old shoes and even with wider ones I find it aches. I know that surgery is the answer but it won't be possible for some time with a baby due to the lengthy recovery process. I actually feel very worried about how I will cope over the next few years if it continues to worsen.

I have tried to include a pic but got an error message saying it was too large - if anyone knows how to get around this then let me know and I will include one so you can see what I am dealing with.

As an aside, if anyone knows how to prevent bunions from getting worse then I am all ears!

This probably isn’t what you really want to hear but what helped and actually reduced my bunion is proper walking boots every time you walk anywhere. You need boots with rigid soles for walks. If you buy a size up in a men’s range you should have a toe box that is wide enough. I buy Brasher. No, they’re not especially beautiful but needs must I think. My previously painful bunion is a shadow of its former self and I would not consider surgery now.

@NormalityIsOverratedoh wow, so your bunion improved??? I have never heard of Brasher but will look them up. You think the wide toe box made all the difference? What made you try them, were they recommended?

I walk miles every day with my dogs and to be honest it was an accidental discovery. I needed wide fit, waterproof boots and Brasher suit me best; other walking boots are available!
And yes, my bunion is massively improved. But I’m a great deal older than you and gave up worrying about how I looked a couple of decades ago.
Whatever you do please don’t wear flip flops or any shoe that makes you grip with your toes.

I found Jones boots really good. I’ve got very big bunions, claw toe etc and really need decent toe box.

I don’t have an answer on the boots but wanted to say the bunion op was life changing for me. I only wish I had both done together to get it done. I’m now early 40s, trying to exercise to ward off the menopausal bloat, and my bunion is causing me pain. The bunion free foot is great.

@NormalityIsOverratedwhat do you do when an occasion calls for something smarter? And in the summer? For the first time this year I got supportive sandals and threw all my flip flops away. I am so envious of people who can wear nice footwear!

@Iwouldratherbemuckingoutthank you! I will have a look there

@rosiebrhow did you find the surgery and recovery? I would love to have it done but I don’t see how it could work with a baby/toddler

@firsttimepregnanthelp I rarely need anything smarter but when I do
I stick to flat ballet pumps provided that I don't need to walk far in them. If I have to walk any distance of more than a mile or so then I wear boots and carry shoes. But as I said I'm way older than you and just don't care how I look 🙂

The actual healing part, with the boot and not putting weight on it was only a couple of weeks for me. The longer term problem was the swelling, which lasted about 9 months so wearing shoes was difficult, I had to buy extra wide fit sandals, which were too big on my non-bunion operated foot. It will be difficult with the kids for a couple of weeks if you don’t have the support at home. But the heel weight bearing shoe meant I could walk, I wasn’t bed-bound. The important thing was keeping it elevated when I wasn’t walking.
