Hand picked make up advent calendar

I would like to get my DD (23) an advent type calendar present for Christmas, but make up only. Not skincare. I don’t want to be stuck to one brand so I thought it would do my own advent style make up gift for her with hand picked favourites. I’m not “up” with the most popular / cult make up products these days. I was going to add YSL touché eclat, Nars orgasm lipstick. What other products do people suggest I should include ? She has dropped many hints about loving makeup but definitely does not want skincare. Any suggestions for products I should include ?

I did this for my adult DD last year. I included things like nail varnish, hair bobbles etc and some Christmas themed items socks, a decoration etc.
I bought an Urban Decay set and split this up. She loved the setting spray and said it was better than the one she’d used before. She loves Mac so I included some items.
I got branded make up from discount sites and offers/ £10 Tuesday on Boots.
I got the Ginger Ray advent boxes (wrapped anything too big) which were good.

TFImBackIn · 29/09/2026 12:32

That sounds lovely. How are you going to package it?

24Dogcuddler · 29/09/2026 13:08

Last year I got a large canvas Christmas bag from TK Maxx. Think no 1 was a large Christmas throw!
I bought way too much last year just kept on buying Already started this year.

retiredhorse · 29/09/2026 19:35

To be honest, how I package it etc I haven’t given a lot of thought too. It’s more about suggestions for products I’m keen to get Thank you for the urban decay set suggestion.

packing wise I was lucky enough to get a liberty advent calendar so I may use that to put the gifts in

I would go to Sephora and ask a member of staff to give you 24 best selling bits.
you know this is going to be super expensive right??

user593 · 29/09/2026 19:52

If I’m honest I think Touché Eclat and Orgasm might be a bit old school for a 23 year old. If you’re planning on doing 24 days I’d also consider buying holiday sets and breaking them up as this will be much more economical.

Ilia The Lip Sketch Gloss Set
Ilia Eye Stylus Trio
Boots x Nars Beauty Edit
Summer Fridays The Lip Butter Balm Minis
Saie Super Glowy Gel Duo

More sets will be released as we get closer to Christmas too.

Thank you so much - just what I was looking for, I suspected I was very outdated with my two suggestions.

Yes, I was adding it up in my head, and I would probably buy 10 or so full size and then pack out with filler stuff like hair bands etc. It’s joint birthday and Christmas present and she is now living independently and working in a full time job post graduation and I would like to treat her with something special that she won’t be able to buy herself.

Nk space would be great for this as well, but I’d try and get some idea of what brands and shades she likes, maybe a voucher too?

What is her style? Lisa Eldridge, Merit, Rhode and Violette FR are also good brands. If she likes sparkles Half Magic is great.

campingwoes · 29/09/2026 20:01

If you're buying a couple of things from the beauty counter sometimes they'll give you the odd perfume tester - I like the Chanel ones. I know you said no skincare but those under eye patches are lovely for pre-makeup prep. My mum got me a posh set of eyelash curlers one year in my stocking which I still have and use daily, that might be a nice option too. Lovely idea!

I’d say pretty natural most of the time but when she does her makeup I’d say it’s an elegant sort of style. It doesn’t seem overdone. No idea of what brands - seems to be a mixture, but she’s sensible with money and although she says she loves luxury things she doesn’t treat herself much.

I think it would be cheaper to buy a make-up heavy beauty advent calendar (like ASOS) and replace all the skincare with bits from Boots/Sephora/John Lewis/Space NK edits that will be coming out from now until Christmas. Otherwise it will be unbelievably expensive and those calendars and edits already contain the most popular brands.

XelaM · 29/09/2026 20:17

Have a looks at all the different BAC offerings on the Beauty Advent thread. You can pick the one with the most make-up and replace the items your daughter won't like from other edits.

PJ98 · 29/09/2026 20:21

Can you ask one of her friends on Facebook what brands she likes?

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePleaseBarista · 29/09/2026 20:33

@SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePleaseBarista
Thank you so much for the detailed list - this is so helpful. Thank you!

For all those suggesting that I get an "off the shelf" Advent Calendar and remove / replace the skincare, I hate waste and I don't really have other people I could give the other items to etc and I don't want the additional packaging as I have empty calendars I can use, appreciate it may not be the wisest cost wise but I really want to hand pick items.

Thanks again for all the feedback.

Lucky girl!

I make one for DD (20) and usually do a mixture of beauty, makeup and Christmas stuff e.g. socks, hot chocolate, biscuits etc and she loves the variety way more than the off the shelf ones I've bought her before.

I don't normally get her the big beauty brands and spend considerably less than you are planning but DD likes K-beauty brands and there's loads of choice in TK Maxx.

I don't prescribe the day - just a lucky dip and all goes in a big Christmas gift bag!

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePleaseBarista · 01/10/2026 18:04

@retiredhorsethats my attitude too, may cost more but everything is something she will use so no waste.

@itsnothingoriginalI could go lucky dip and mix it up if I kept the first and Christmas Eve pyjamas though. I wrap each item and buy advent stickers from the same woman on Etsy each year.

People are buying advent calendars and selling off bits on vinted so I would have a look there first.

I recently purchased the lisa eldridge liquid eyeliner for £8, it was from this years spacenk advent.I really like it and have picked up another.

For a palette i would go for natasha denona from vinted some people are selling ones from edits , last years cult beauty advent and also from last years Glossybox at much lower than retail. For setting spray you will also find loads on vinted but I I particularly like makeup forever, urban decay or Mac. I'm currently using the MILK setting spray and would say it's quite good and loads are on vinted.

Mac is my usual go to for lipsticks but I quite like Vieve too and Sisley. Perfume wise I'd go Kayali and get her a mini. For mascara I would consider the brand ilia. For blush I wpuld go for a Patrick Ta duo and again its cropped up in advents this year so lots of vinted.

I would add an eyebrow gel, mascara, eyeliner, eye pencil, her regular foundation, powder, setting spray, liquid blush, contour stick, bronzer, ,powder blush, highlighter, eyeshadow palette, lip liner, lipsticks x3, lip gloss, lip oil, makeup remover so micellar water and cotton pads or reusable ones or makeup wipes. After that a candle, fluffy socks a face mask and some eye patches and a perfume.

So if make a list of what you want tp but, any particular brands you want, check vinted and then other retailers such as Spacenk, Cult beauty, Sephora, boots etc. If you sign up as a new member you will be liable for discounts and can check for a blue light card discount if that works for you.

I'm going to challenge myself to doing this next year for myself and then getting my dh to fill an empty advent calendar I already have.

IThinkThereforeIPaint · Yesterday 08:29

People sell the bits from beauty calendars they don't want, so you could pick up unused makeup in the box for less on Vinted or eBay. Particularly if you are a bit flexible on what you are looking for.

SheilaFentiman · Yesterday 08:40

Something like this would get you five make up products and a make up cleanser

24Dogcuddler · Yesterday 09:19

This week I’ve ordered make up items from Sephora and Branded Beauty for my adult DD’s advent bag. Some great bargains.

Topbird29 · Yesterday 09:32

Sephora sell lots of mini sized items nearer their till. Not cheap though! But good brands. Boots £10 tues is good- there was a set of 2 no7 make up brushes on there last week - individually boxed. That's the type of thing that can bulk out with - i like pp suggestion of maje up remover and the re usable cotton pads. Maybe a face mask. Also splitting beauty edits - next have quite a few, but maybe more skincare focused. And check out the beauty advent calendar thread - agree that loads of people are selling unwanted items from advent calendars now. I picked up a mini laura mercier blurring powder for about £8 - wanted to try it but not spend loads.
