Balyage

I'll start this by saying Im not a hairdresser so not very savvy about this form of witchcraft.
I went for a very expensive balyage a couple of years ago and it looked fabulous. She painted it on.
Sadly I didnt go back as I cant justify the cost every 8 weeks. Ive been to two other hairdressers since then who did it with some kind of back combing method and it looked bloody awful with lumps of colour everywhere that weren't subtle and looked awful.
Is back combing the normal method of doing balyage? I don't know how it should be done.
Any advice much appreciated.

both. Backcombing ensures it looks more natural and helps with regrowth but balayage is the method of painting it on randomly.

I am the queen of lazy hair care and get a full balayage done once a year. Yes it grows out, but my hairdresser is fabulous and it looks great throughout the year. I get a cut and toner maybe a couple of other times throughout the year, I certainly don’t touch up my hair every 8 weeks!

For my balayage, they take a section, weave a comb through it (so it drops some hair), then back combs some of it, then paints on the bleach. It sounds so simple but it really is an art.

I thought the whole point is that it doesn’t need redoing. I had a similar thing which I think my hairdresser called “lived in blonde” or something similar? It’s lasted 2 years so far and is just growing out with no noticeable growing out, if that makes sense. She has won awards for her blonde colouring though.

It does need redoing. Your hair will grow and so the coloured bit will be lower and lower down the hair shaft.

Mine is painted on but I certainly don’t go every 8 weeks! I get my roots done maybe 3 times and then have my colour done. That’s probably over a year.

Agree that you don’t need to go every 8 weeks, it’s much lower maintenance. My hairdresser recommends every 3-4 months. I probably go every 5-6.

Mine was done backcombing first time having it done so assumed that was normal
