Dramatic title but thats how i feel.. am late 50s but i WFH mostly with the odd trip to the office. My life is casual but i caught sight of myself in a mirror in tkmax and i just thought i can do better than this !!! After 30 years on a corporate job I have lost my way and just can't get it right. Ive been following the minilalist posts and just want a dozen or so things i actalluly love, which last and make me feel good rather than a heap of rsndom meh... ideas ??? ..5 foot 8 size 14 mostly !!

Sorry to derail slightly, but can I ask how you’ve lost this weight? Same age as you and I seem to have gained weight for no apparent reason. I don’t seem to be able to shake it either (& still normal bmi so not eligible for weight loss med). Would like to get back to what I was!

Jabs. I was BMI 25 so I cheated. I looked fine and healthy but I just wanted to go back to the way I was, and before jabs Id really Ive never eaten healhtier and less in my life, and was exercising so it didn't seem fair. Want to get to 21/22 again. Its still surprisingly hard tbh and is going slow, but it is remarkable to me how little I actually need to eat to lose weight. Im talking 600 cals a day!! I simply cannot do that without jabs. Just makes it way easier to portion control and not think about food all the time. I honestly don't think i could do it without jabs. Its been nearly 2 months, and gone from a size 12 to a 8/10 (Im a 9 now really and its annoying cos nothing fits) Want to be a solid comfortable 8 again and then I will maintain. Im tall (5 10) with massive norks so its not easy to achieve naturally. I far prefer the way I look at this size.

If you're on Tiktok have a look for Style by Nerys, she gives no nonsense advice for over 50s including the big 'Nos.' No crocs, no leggings, no waterfall cardis, no floral dresses with a denim jacket, no zip up fleeces, no cropped tight trousers, no badly styled handbags. It's quite an eye opener how we can lapse into 'lazy can't be bothered' attire.

Vinted & Ebay can be our friends, getting eg tailored Zara blazers, well made wide legged trousers, Marc Jacobs camera bag, Adidas Sambas or Gazelles... I have got rid of all my floral stuff as it was so aging.

I cant stand that woman. All the preening, teen girl posing, and dissing other women looks and style. Its just so mean girl - not a womans woman at all. Also her style is so blah. Theres nothing interesting or unique about it at all. Her whole schtick is 'classic, plain, conservative'. Theres no edge or individuality. Not my bag at all. Apparently its slutty to wear low cut tops in your 50s! Yeh whatever.

Exactly what we don't want - more rules.

No crocs, no leggings, - pah! Maybe not in public but I love mine..
Agree about waterfall cardis, if your figure is matronly and they're dated.
no floral dresses with a denim jacket - it just needs to look current not something you've been wearing for the past 20 years. Tiny print midi dress and teeny jacket with white daps is dated.
no zip up fleeces - sod that, they're warm and I've been wearing them since they were called 'Helly Hansens'.
no cropped tight trousers - no cropped anything thanks.

T K Maxx was only ever any good when the Gold Label stuff was in a separate section.

Now … You definitely deserve better.

Don’t know your style - but one or two of these might suit:

https://aimelondon.com/

You only need a tiny number of excellent things and you can fill in the gaps from Uniqlo.

These clothes are ridiculously expensive and out of reach for huge numbers of people. This is just bragging, frankly.

@CousinBette , the post is fine. You can look at the £££ brands for inspiration and buy a similar garment from a brand within your budget.

Surely no one would wear any of the above to work? I would get laughed at if I wore this stuff to school…

And me.

cityliving99 · 26/09/2026 18:01

That would be a big Debbie Downer for me, working from home. My favourite part of the day is deciding what to wear. I love clothes, so at least I get plenty of wear out of what I buy.

permanently · 26/09/2026 18:41

OP what are you doing with your hair? Have you let your natural grey grow? I’d say this would be a strong start with a modern short cut X

TwinklySquid · 26/09/2026 20:20

I’d book a personal shopper with someone like John Lewis. Get them to do the hard work.
