Alternative to t-shirt

I have loads of t-shirts that I rarely wear. In the summer I tend to end up wearing strappy tops. But as it cools down I am looking for something that is a bit nicer than a t-shirt. I am 51, if that matters, I’m a size 16 with big boobs and a bit of a belly so don’t want clingy. But when I wear the smock style tops I end up feeling like I look pregnant.

Any ideas of what I can wear please?

Ooh - I really like the look of these! Would you say they are true to size? They look a bit clingy on the models

I find them true to size, and not clingy. But maybe buy two sizes and compare?

I'm sorry, I really don't like that one. It's too long and just looks a mess at the bottom.

I agree with @Gwenhwyfar . I don't like any of the Bam t-shirts
Prefer Women's T-Shirts - UNIQLO UK

For casual but put together, I default to button down shirts in Oxford cotton, or ribbed Henley style things with long sleeves. Agree with investing in higher quality t shirts too. Uniqlo HeatTech stuff can be layered underneath any of the above on a chillier day!

I think I'm just fairly long in the body so it stretches out, plus I very much have a mum tum. All the Uniqlo etc. t-shirts are way too short for me and nobody needs to see my belly button when I raise my arms.

I'm between sizes and I need the bigger size in these. They are definitely not flattering if you get them too small. But in the right size they are amazingly comfy. Slightly lower than crew neck, so no strangled feeling, great over leggings for Pilates.

Have you considered dresses? I tend to live in dresses.

And virtually impossible to find in non crap material.

White stuff does a range called “Nelly notch neck”. They are t shirt material but 100% cotton, are v flattering and wash well. There are thousands on Vinted.

Thanks. White Stuff colours tend to make my soul die a little, if I’m honest, but I’ll have a look in case there happens to be a good deep black or red.

I have loads of these- I am busty and squidgy of middle and they are fine for normal size as they have some stretch plus the gather works on your favour. They also wash and wear well (thigh cooler temps are better)

bridgetreilly · 28/09/2026 01:09

I just got a couple of these and I really like them. Good quality, look smart, still basically a t-shirt.

Another vote here for the Seasalt Larissa shirts. New colours annd patterns every season, last season’s always in the sale and tons on vinted. Added bonus for me is they are in a crinkly cotton so don’t need ironing!

CaveMum · 29/09/2026 11:24

I have a few Massimo Dutti tops that I’ve picked up from Vinted (after finding one in a local charity shop). They’re great “transition” pieces do good for spring and autumn when you want a bit more coverage but don’t want to over heat!

Agree with all of this.

I live in button downs - have a look at WNU. Usual suspects Cos, Massimo etc. also have lots of options.
