Hair thickening product recommendations

Can I ask you what you’ve used and actually works to make your hair look and feel thicker / voluminous?

Ive used the colour wow spray and mousse and that’s quite good but very heavy on my hair and makes it greasy quickly.

Anything you’ve tried and would recommend?

If you can find it, the Volume Head and Shoulders really works without being heavy.
If you have fine hair, most products will weigh it down. Mousse is essentially weightless and a small amount added carefully can be very effective to add 'bulk' without heaviness.

..I think it's called Thick and Strong now.

BlackCat14 · 20/09/2026 10:20

I’m suffering with post partum hair loss and it’s driving me insane. I’ve been recommended pumpkin seed oil tablets and just ordered some from Amazon. Not sure if they’ll work but hope they do. Has anyone else tried these?

Calypsocuckoo · 20/09/2026 10:26

I have had very thin hair since being on weight loss injections. I like the Hask thickening collagen shampoo and conditioner (got mine in waitrose, not seen them anywhere else). I also use the Pantene thickening serum, it’s the best serum I have tried, has started working and only half way down the bottle. Much better than the L’Oréal one.

I have tried pumpkin seed oil and I did think they worked well, but then I read that you shouldn’t take them along side HRT so I stopped.

I also found that having my hair cut shorter into a bob has made it look thicker as have lost the thin ends.

Squirrelsnut · 20/09/2026 10:28

Actually I do! I'm much older (55) but my hair is pretty nice if I do say so myself.😄
I know it's easy to say, but don't worry about pp hairloss. It'll almost certainly correct itself after a while. Just take care of yourself.

Squirrelsnut · 20/09/2026 10:43

Sorry, me again!
I've just remembered that both rosemary and peppermint have been proven medically to stimulate hair growth.
Have a look online, there's hundreds of simple instructions to make sprays and oils containing the active compounds.

Pumpkin seed mildly suppresses free testosterone, as Regaine does slightly more strongly. Worth a try, it won't do you any harm.

I got some Regaine-alike scalp serum from Hair & Me, but didn't use it because it darkened the hair where it was applied. I idiotically thought pumpkin seed oil might be better, only to find it's also dark and stained the hair!

Keep taking the pumpkin, and good luck 🎃

Thanks - I’ll give that a go.

That’s a good point actually with the mousse. I’ve definitely been adding loads after I saw a video with a stylist doing the same.

Champo pitta growth serum was excellent for me - my hair was wrecked after extensions and this helped it thicken back up relatively fast

GarlicSomething · 20/09/2026 10:51

I've got some John Frieda Pro Filler products last month. They do make my hair look a bit thicker, but I prefer mousse and, in a bad situation, 'thickening' hair spray. I looked up how all these new 'grow & thicken' products work. They don't stimulate growth, but help to stop old hairs falling out. This wouldn't continue to work over time, but may well do if you're dealing with a short-term condition.

As PPs have said, a bit of mousse in the roots is still the best way to give the impression of volume at the styling stage.

I found that Bed Head by TIGI - Small Talk Hair Thickening Cream works the best for me. Not much needed, rub into roots and style. Lasts forever

MyDuvetDay · 20/09/2026 11:11

Life long thin haired person here! I spray Aveda Thickening Tonic on my hair before blow drying. It plumps it up and adds a touch of weight which helps a lot. I’ve been using it for decades, it’s great.

onemoretimefromthetop · 20/09/2026 11:30

Ooo the aveda spray! I got a small bottle of that years ago and remember it working.

I just started using Sam McKnight plumping and voluming cream and it's amazing. With a bit of mousse at the roots to help

TheOGCCL · 20/09/2026 12:36

Second Small Talk. There was a whole thread on this once and there was so much enthusiasm I got some and it’s really good. Small amount snd rub between hands first.

BlackCat14 · 20/09/2026 12:55

Thanks guys, hopefully the pumpkin will do the trick!

Also based on some other posts, I’ve just added the Aveda and Small Talk to a basket on Amazon… aveda is £22 for 100ml and Small Talk £10 for 240ml, so might go for the Small Talk first but save Aveda for when I’m feeling more flush!

I add pumpkin seed oil to my daily salads and my hair is much thicker and I have less hair loss. Even my hairdresser noticed which was nice.

I use Ouai detox shampoo it transforms my hair into lovely thick swishyness.

Ive been taking biotin supplements which encourages growth and has really worked, got it from nutrition geeks. I think I got a 3 month pack and it worked so bought a year long supply not ££££.

I am using the John Frieda pro thingy shampoo, conditioner and spray too, it works well. Also got 3 inches chopped off, back to a bob from a lob and that helped too.

Had thicker hair as a child that went very fine at puberty and then fine and limp at menopause (possibly also the mounjaro effect too).

This is why I don't understand all of the young girls getting extensions (not clip on, but hairdresser type pulling on the scalp). Surely their hair is already healthy, and this will ruin it. Alot you can tell as well, as they're not done well.

That’s so good to know- thank you!

I have been having chemo but not a hair loss one, one that thins the hair. I have used rosemary oil in a silk bonnet and massaged my head loads. Silk pillow and a shampoo called grow me along side biotin tablets. I have lost a bit of hair but nobody can tell. I have been really lucky

dontcookwontcook · 20/09/2026 15:41

I use regain because my hair was falling out. Theres
much more of it now
(I know it’s not a thickener but my hair was so fine I doubt a thickener would have helped much in my case!)

I’ve been taking pumpkin seed oil supplements for about 4 months and have definitely noticed a difference. Hair is much healthier and thicker. It’s never going to be the hair from the herbal essences commercial but it’s definitely less brittle.

Boots, Superdrug and Sainsbury's often have Small Talk reduced to about £6 or £7.
