M&S is cool, but we knew that, didn’t we?

Interesting article on the BBC website today. I’m actually really surprised that it’s not done a London Fashion Week show before.
Certainly over the last few years it’s become one of my go-to places if I decide I need new jeans, a particular kind of dress etc. It’s even acceptable to my 16yo DS who’s very particular about where his clothes come from and has quite a small list of “acceptable” high St brands he’ll deign to go into!

Is it cool to wear M&S clothes now? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cje3rk4p39zwo

The retailer hosted its first-ever London Fashion Week show this week, celebrating 100 years of producing clothing.

The Director has come from Topshop and you can see that influence

The trouble is good quality material costs ££££

I buy a lot of clothes from M&S.
last week a 16 year old told me that everyone thought I was the most stylish member of staff at school. They also pitched me at 38. I am 60.
I mix M&S with other brands.
Another student said I should get on Tik Tok which isn’t going to happen.
i am sorry, but these people who say it’s cheap and not stylish have no clue. Their crepe tab trousers are amazing quality.

Cmon, no one thinks you’re 38. I’m sure you look good for your age, but no one thinks a 60 year old is in their 30s.

MadGoodAndCompletelySafeToKnow · 19/09/2026 18:36

It's OK for underwear and menswear (though their supposedly premium bra ranges are a rip-off), but the womenswear is boring and the fabrics are cheap and nasty. Per Una used to be wonderful in the 90s/2000s but that's gradually deteriorated into the same tired old rubbish too.

Yes that’s the issue, they are trying to keep the price point low, to compete with the likes of next, god knows why they wish to, I guess it’s how they think they will make money, pile em high sell em low, volume sales. and to do that they need to use low quality cheap material

but hats off to them, as said, their website looks fantastic. But when you see the clothes in real life, you can see its cheap

bingobangs · 19/09/2026 18:38

@Notsosweetcarolinenot enough people will buy the higher priced items though for them to overhaul the entire range.

That’s where you are wrong.
Teenagers don’t have the life experience, to really understand people’s age. So I am going to own the compliment.
And we have 40 year olds with no fashion sense, greying hair and damaged skin.

when they decorated my room for my birthday, staff were shocked. Many said they thought I was in my 40s.
I am sure it’s because I love clothes!
When parents pick up students I am often shocked how old they look. It’s all about skin care and a great attitude.

I agree with the quality not being great. I've had summer linen trousers a few times but the fit it never great. Standard length are too short and long are too long. And the dark colours lose dye very easily. I find the hems are poor quality and they always just come loose. You get what you pay for though. I paid nearly 80 quid for a pair of linen Hobbs trousers recently and they are fab. Fit and length are great, the pockets sit nicely and are lined. Hems are properly sewn. Wash ok. They just LOOK more expensive on.

I'm a fan of natural fibres and will splash out on things like cashmere jumpers as I think they really do keep you warmer and are much nicer to water than cheaper fabrics. They're like a hug! I splashed out on a cream crew neck cashmere jumper from M&S last winter. It was 90 quid. The tag is still on it. The fit just wasn't good. The arms were too short under the arms. It sat strangely on the collar bone. The colour was too yellowy. Should have sent it straight back but I thought I maybe just needed to take time to style it right. What a waste of money.

I'm happy to spend more money on staples I will really get use out of, but I do find that quality really varies, even with more expensive brands. So much probably goes towards expensive marketing rather than the actual quality of the items.

I think M&S is the opposite of cool despite their hard marketing campaigns.

I found an Instagram account recently of an English woman who lives in Spain. She was in the UK over the summer and made a beelline for M&S because so many influencers people being paid to say so were exclaiming over the clothes. She walked around shaking her head, picking up items that looked cheap and nasty and wondering aloud why on earth people were saying it was great. It made me laugh because it was one of the first honest influencer accounts about M&S.

I wouldn’t say the Spanish are celebrated for fashion sense. Beauty yes.
But not fashion.
And I would never ever trust an Influencers opinion.

Aquasoap · 19/09/2026 19:00

I think they've effed it again. It had some nice things last year but I went in recently and it was all bras, sportswear and beauty.

They have stopped a few old classics (cotton regular fit tshirt), and replaced with synthetic or skinny fit items. On their website, it seems mostly items from other brands and few M&S. Bags look cheap - either pleather or cheap looking leather.

Are you serious? The Spanish are one of the best dressed in Europe!

Zara, Massimo Dutti, Otho, Mango, Pull& Bear, Loewe flood high streets for a reason!

It’s because they are beautiful. Everything looks good on them.
But no, fashion is all about London, New York and Milan.

I don’t buy much from those stores. But I am tall and so struggle.
Also mass produced….

Don’t nod too much, you will get a crepey neck!

This is bollocks. Skin care helps, but I imagine diet, luck and money help too. A great attitude won’t get you far if you haven’t got enough money to buy loads of fresh fruit and vege.

I am not sure eating lots of fruit gives you a certain style?

And retinol is your friend.

You appeared to be saying that your youthful good looks are down to skin care and a great attitude. Skin care doesn’t give you style!
