Where to find good quality knitwear for the mature woman?

I am in my early 60's and in recent years have worn knitwear from Pure Collection, Kettlewell, Woolovers and Hobbs among others.

Kettlewell used to do lovely 100% merino cardigans (Aurelia/Marta if you're familiar with them) but they haven't done anything of that quality for two or three years now. The shapes of the longer line type cardigans (without being ridiculously long) suits my body shape much better than the boxy, short body shapes that are everywhere.

The other problem is that places like Toast also do the boxy shapes but tend to focus on more warm, natural colours where as I tend to suit cooler colours like fuchsia, royal blue, black or grey. The thing is knitwear imo has seriously gone downhill in terms of quality in most places (e.g. Pure Collection cardigans are now too short in the arm for me even though my arms are normal length and the body length seems to be getting shorter each year for years now).

So where does someone my age get decent knitwear in nice colours (not short in the body and boxy) and I am prepared to pay a bit for it, just not top quality designer prices which are silly. I like to buy decent quality pieces that I take care of - I've had a Hobbs cardigan for about twenty years now and it's still going strong.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Navy Grey
Not cheap by any means but lasting , classic designs and beautiful colours. I’ve been wearing mine for years , genuinely worth investing in

Have a look at Gudren Sjoden.

Gonegrey31 · 18/09/2026 17:07

I’ve also bought Autograph Men’s merino wool round necks , size S or XS
I’m older than you but these are a great buy and fit well

Uniglo men’s merino cardigans.

Gonegrey31 · 18/09/2026 17:09

Should have pointed out Autograph is M&S

I have this jumper from M&S in four colours (they do a striped one on a different listing, plus grey, pink and blue).

it’s perfect for these autumnal days where it’s too hot for proper winter clothes but too cold for nothing. Lightweight but you can tell it’ll be cosy in the winter too. I love it!

Dilling, a wide range of mainly wool clothing from cardigans to knickers. Their striped thermals are brilliant. Plus their super wash process does not involve any coating of plastic or teflon.

Lambswool I would really rate Patrick Grant’s Community Clothing especially for more traditional shapes. For cashmere Brora or even better Poetry but colours can be a bit iffy.

Plus countless brilliant Scottish knitwear manufacturers which others may list. There’s honestly no shortage of excellent knitwear - for any age group! Though I should say I’m a similar age to you and would find the things you describe somewhat dated and not to my taste at all. Some of the brands I’ve listed do the most fabulous colours - but it may mean adjusting your eye to more contemporary shapes.

Please may I ask what you mean by “contemporary shapes”?

The two best jumpers I've bought lately are from 1) Peregrine - absolutely gorgeous quality but is a boxier modern cut and 2) Mars Knitwear - really soft lambswool and a bit longer in the back.

There's a royal blue one here.

Yes that's the colour I want - I'll take a look.

contemporary shapes in my mind are short boxy jumpers and cardigans so think of a square rather than a long rectangle that I seem to suit - the sort of thing you find literally everywhere.

I really rate Seasalt for their knitwear

Women's Cardigans and Jumpers - Knitwear - Seasalt Cornwall
Some good styles but a lot of short and boxy looking ones. I don't need knitwear right now but could be tempted.
