Red head going grey

I hated the colour of m hair, particularly in my teens. by mid/late 20s I started to like it and now I’m late 30s I love it. I’ve not dyed it in about 15 years and I get a lot of compliments on it. It’s a mix of really red hairs alongside very blonde and even dark browns. I have very thick, wavy hair and the texture of the red and dark hair is coarse whereas the blonder hair is quite fine.

anyway, over the last couple of years I’ve noticed more and more white hairs creeping in. It’s now quite noticeable at the front of my hair at the parting, and of course the white hairs and the coarsest and shiniest of all!

I was going to leave them and kind of ‘fade out’ as I was assured red heads do. However, I actually think they are really prematurely ageing me 😰

I don’t even know where I would start with covering them up, I’d definitely go to a professional but as my hair isn’t just one colour what could they do that wouldn’t mask my natural colour on the rest of the hairs??

I’ve included a small picture to show the shade it currently is.

I get my roots done. I'd assumed the colour used was red, but the hairdresser showed me it's a fairly light ash/mouse brown. I still look like a dark redhead, my natural colour. It's magic! I guess the light brown just blends in with the darker red somehow, perhaps it isn't dark enough to cover the actual red hairs, but hides the grey hairs.
Someone told me red hair is very slow to go completely grey, I'm not sure if this is true, I'm in my early 60s and still only about 30% grey.

I think the age at which you go grey depends on your family genetics. I was a fairly similar colour but started to go grey in my mid 30's. I did get it coloured for 20+ years but eventually let it go in covid to find I was silver rather than grey.

Your hair looks a beautiful colour. I would leave it personally. It will look gorgeous and you'll not have to worry about doing your roots. I'm a blonde and going grey/silver naturally.

It's true. My red relatives never actually went grey (died in 60s or early 70s), maybe there were grey hairs in it, but overall looked red still.

I’d go back to good old henna! There are different colours available now - you could prob have a red-gold. Or if not avao, just leave it on for less time. Bit if a pain but it’s great on grey and washes out gradually and gracefully, no roots! Plus extra shine, what’s not to like.

Your hair is very pretty ❤️

I use a level 7 ash blonde on roots and I still look strawberry blonde / lighter red. I need the warmth. You can always use semi permanent if you want a less harsh grow out

Thank you. I just worry using a colour will totally change the tone of my hair. Some of the white hairs are quite long so just doing roots won’t really solve the problem. However, I really don’t like those shiny buggers taking the spotlight!
