Looking for old-fashioned pearly nail polish

I have a couple of old bottles of polish (which I think belonged to my mum), they're years and years old, and they have a lovely sort of pearly sheen, but I can't seem to find anything like this anywhere.
Any ideas? I'd like a nice mid-brown, but if I could find a brand or range that had that old-fashioned look to it I'd get a few colours.
Am not in UK, so needs to be available online.
Thank you!

Which brand are the pearly polishes you have, OP?

HolyRavioli · 19/09/2026 14:29

I can't read the name on the bottles I have, it looks like it might be "Mo" in very cursive letters.
unfortunately the Barry M ones don't seem to be readily available here (Germany).
i had a good look i while out shopping today, there's occasionally a pearly pink but that's it.

I'd look at Rimmel ,they have tons of shades.

Yes I second that, and was going to be saying the same. I only just bought a shimmery pink colour from their range yesterday!

Theres a nice Rimmel shade called Euphoria.
I've had several bottles, its a pearly nude colour, lovely on tanned hands.

Can you post a pic of the nail varnish colour? Maybe we can find a dupe for you

TheBitterBoy · 19/09/2026 14:53

Mavala do lots of pearly colours, they are often in Lloyds chemists

Can you post a pic?

If they are of a vintage to be your moms then it’s unlikely anything on the market will be an exact copy - brands largely phased out the use of guanine for shimmer by the early 2010’s.

there are some that get pretty close but nothing that truly replicates the effect.

@HolyRavioli

I wonder whether they are old Margaret Astor bottles. That was a popular brand when I was studying/working in Germany.

I know you don’t want pink but this Rimmel one is good quality with a couple of coats and really takes me back!

I used to have Astor, and yes, that's exactly the type of nail varnish I mean! Another brand was Misslyn.
The shimmer effect doesn't come from sparkles/glitter, it's like a very, very light metallic sort of look. I think most nail varnish used to be like that, with occasional opaque "flat" colours.

@TheBitterBoy that's a great recommendation, thank you! I'm just looking through all their colours, they have "cream" and "pearl" varnishes.
