Any ideas about how those with summer colouring can deal with the sea of brown and khaki in the shops?

Yesterday I went casual coat shopping, just something to throw on for shopping and car journeys. I scoured M&S and John Lewis. Nothing except for a blue coat in White Stuff with a collar that didn't sit right. Lovely styles, but....

Does anyone have any ideas?

Ditto winter colouring. It's all such a disappointment.

Brown, khaki, orange are all such no-nos. I think I'll stick with what I've already got until blue, green and red come back round again!

Ashmoleum · 13/09/2026 11:58

Wear what you have already. I'd look like a ploughed field with cow dung if I wore any of the awful boring browns and shite green that's around now. Awful colours, I hate them. So I won't buy them.

Where are all the lovely wines, burgundies, nice greens and so on?

I feel your pain! Just looked on Roman, filtered for blue coats, 67 results. Anything?

I cant wear any of that. Burgundy looks especially awful so no matter if it's in Im not wearing it.

HellonHeels · 13/09/2026 12:04

Agree with pps - just wait it out and shop from your wardrobe for the season.

If you desperately need a new coat, look on Vinted.

momager22 · 13/09/2026 12:09

I’m an autumn so I love it !
I would try vinted and filter BNWT

Keymoment · 13/09/2026 12:41

For a coat, I’d just get a scarf in the right colours.

Thank you. I prefer to try on before buying if it's a coat.

Thank you but a bit too casual for me.

Ditto Spring colouring - everything is geared towards those with Autumn colouring - all year round. I suppose the logic being that most people have brown hair, brown eyes and blended/low contrast colouring so it’s financially beneficial. I’ve often thought about arranging a trip to Scandinavia purely for clothes shopping.

I think your only solution is to go online or perhaps focus on legacy brands who do outdoor/activity wear such as Rohan, Trespass etc..

RosesAndHellebores · 13/09/2026 12:50

@JustSetFireToIt funnily enough my hair was brown and I am brown eyed but I am most definitely not an autumn. Anything from the autumn palette completely washes me out.

So if you want to try on in a shop, have you got other shops locally you can try other than the ones you've listed? Or a nearby town with other shops?
Any markets nearby? Charity shops?

Ashmoleum · 13/09/2026 13:13

I haven't shopped there in ages, but I think TK Maxx often have last season stuff on special. Maybe have a look if there's one near you?

TheOGCCL · 13/09/2026 14:01

I'm amazed at how stubborn the brown and sludge tones trend is lasting. It suits me as an Autumn and I do feel it's slight payback for YEARS in the wilderness but I really expected it to have been and gone by now, it's now been years of this. Shows you how some fashion isn't fast and fickle.

I have noticed grey starting to creep back in so I think we are maybe turning a corner. Makes me want to buy everything brown/khaki/rust in sight. My wardrobe has never looked better.

bananaobama · 13/09/2026 14:04

I love brown and blue together. Get a scarf in blue

OsfameronTanamoril · 13/09/2026 14:07

I had to google what summer, winter and autumn colouring. Never bothered to have my colours done.

I can get up to Central London fairly easily and may well do that.

JL stocks most of the brands who have independent shops in my county: Seasalt, White Stuff, Whistles, Hobbs, Hush, etc. They had a nice navy barbour jacket but the sizing was off. Even an 18 was too narrow on the shoulders and I'm a standard size 14.

TK Maxx is definitely a good shout. I'd be surprised if they had nothing suitable. If you can wade through everything! I find it a bit overwhelming at times. But if you know what you're looking for it's a bit easier.
