Jumper came apart - would you send it back?

Didn't know where to put this

I ordered a school jumper for my child from the online school uniform shop. Wore it once and washed it and second time she put it on - as she was putting it on the next bit came apart (it's v neck and that bit came apart). She wasn't doing anything rough it just came apart as she was putting it on.

Obviously this isn't right as it's the second time she's worn it. But I'm just worried that if I send it back they won't refund it because they'll say it's been washed or try to get around it and say it's our fault or something

What would you do? Do you think they'd just refund it or try to say no?
Has anyone else had this before?

I'd email them with photos explaining it's been washed once according to instructions and this has happened and please can they refund or replace. I wouldn't send it back without them confirming it.

purpleme12 · 10/09/2026 21:38

Ok will try sending a photo

Does anyone know how to word it to make it sound like they should replace/refund it? And to make it clear that I shouldn't have to send it back without knowing if they'll refund it too?

They might have to inspect it before guaranteeing a refund. I don’t work with clothes, but we do get items returned to us broken sometimes, and we can tell by looking at them if they have been mistreated or got caught on something, rather than just fallen apart.

‘Hello, I purchased a jumper from you on x date. It has been worn once and washed once according to instructions, and has come apart on the second wear. I attach pictures. You will see it is clearly faulty. Can you please confirm how I can send it back for a refund or replacement?’

So what if they then tell me oh we don't think it's faulty we're not refunding? (Which will make me really pissed off because I know we haven't done anything). Will they just send it back out to us and then I'll have to mend it cos she can't go round school with it like that?

I mean if it had been some months since I bought it I'd be pissed off but I wouldn't bother complaining or trying to get a refund but it's the second time she's worn it so I shouldn't be sending it back worrying about it they'll agree with me surely

Just stop stressing about it and send them the photos. They'll tell you the outcome by email, and assuming you've bought it recently and can send the receipt to show it won't be an issue. If you were querying a high value item they might want to see it, but they won't give a damn about one poxy jumper.

purpleme12 · 11/09/2026 06:37

Well they've told me to send it in so they can see it and decide. That's why I was stressing..

But I can try sending a photo

How much was it and do you have another one.

likelysuspect · 11/09/2026 06:57

OH was laughing at me yesterday because I was complaining that a seam had come undone after the first wash on a shirt I bought recently. Its a really nice shirt. It was £3.50 in poundland!!!

I wont be taking it back.

purpleme12 · 11/09/2026 07:01

No I probably wouldn't if it was £3.50! 😆

It’s not unreasonable of them to want to inspect it though. Before they refund / send you a new one, they need to make sure it’s not been damaged by you. A photo won’t necessarily show that so manage your expectations in how this might go as they may still insist in wanting to see it themselves.

BalakayAARon · 11/09/2026 07:09

Just send it in. It sounds like it has come apart at a weak part that wasn't sufficiently reinforced in manufacturing.

It is probably only the second week of school, if in England, so if it was a recent purchase for the school year this will be obvious.

Don't stress, send it in and I'm sure you'll get a replacement by return. Is it the school you are returning it to?

I take things back for less than that. These firms need to know when stuff is faulty and making them refund gets in in the system and their statistics.

No, there used to be a uniform shop at school. Unfortunately they've outsourced it to an online uniform shop now. I would have felt better going in person about it but can't do that now

It sounds like faulty manufacturing. The stitching around the collar wasn't secured properly when it was linked and has unravelled. They should just replace it.

Why are you stressing though, they’ll either replace it or they won’t - I’d think if you can prove purchase and it’s recent they’ll struggle to say it’s wear and tear. If they don’t replace it you either mend it or replace it. They’ll need to return it to you because you’ve bought and paid for it. It’s a pain to send it back, but not a huge stress. Does your DD have a jumper she can wear in the meantime?
