Well, it's not really relevant what I would wear, as I doubt if you'd choose the same outfit!!

But if you are after advice, then more details of your height/size/colouring, likely budget etc would be helpful? Type of venue, time of day, by formal is it black-tie???

Sorry not black tie, early 40s size 10/12. 5ft 8.
Id like sleeves but other than that no ideas!
find it hard dressing up in winter as I tend to hibernate in winter and go out as little as poss.
Glam day / evening in a swanky hotel in Bath.

What colours do you like/suit? Do you prefer plain or patterned? And do you definitely want to wear a dress rather than coords/a trouser suit etc? Do you want it to be versatile enough to wear again? Do you already have shoes/jewellery etc?

And ... budget?!!!!

I would wear a velvet column dress I have, probably with a full length velvet coat.

I would either go for a short (just above knee) structured dress or a longer dress with cape sleeve detail.

I am mid 40’s, 5’5’ and size 10/12. I have my eye on this for a cocktail party in a swanky Glasgow hotel this December but conscious it will luckily be longer on me.
