Suggestions for a conference blouse under £50 to wear with black trousers

I have to attend a professional conference and I would like to wear black work trousers with a nice blouse. However I don't have a blouse, can anyone make any suggestions? Budget £50 max.

I suit cream/burgundy/olive more than white or light blue. I would like long sleeves, not sheer or too low cut. Can't be high on my neck or too tight on my armpits.

I was hoping for something with an interesting feature, embroidery or a bow or something but doesn't look like I have left my pjs on!!

Long list of demands there, please help!

How about this? It comes in a range of colours too.

Aargh! I don’t know why my link isn’t posting. Google Finery London Mavis Ivory Pussy Bow Button-Through Blouse.

Uniqlo has nice blouses/shirts - but I think it’s worth trying them on, so if you can get to a physical store, it’s better than online.

This is nice if you can wear polyester.

I love the monsoon one @TemporarilyCantDoMyself

The other options are all nice too!

Hawes and Curtis shirts are lovely and well within budget

Bought this in Tescos today, it looks really good on, it’s shorter at the front, but not too short, batwing sleeves so won’t be tight on your armpits, cuffs, v neck but not too low, with a tie front as the detail and it’s cream, not sheer. It might tick all of your requirements - oh and it’s £22.50 so well within budget

I much prefer a blouse or shirt worn with black trousers to have black within the pattern - it makes the outfit look much more deliberately put together. IMO it can otherwise look as if you've just gone for your usual work trousers with any old top.

This is why I would suggest you go over budget & buy this one from Jaeger!! It's got olive, mustard & black in the pattern, will really elevate (sorry! I dislike that word but am having a blank!) your black work trousers, & you can just add gold earrings & decent footwear & you're sorted!!

I am another one that would suggest keeping some black in the top half, and think about pairing with a decent coat or jacket. Black trousers and a different coloured tope can make you look cut in half, so unless you are deliberately going for block colours better to blend. Quite hard to match blacks though so choose wisely.

And depending on your shape, a top (rather than a blouse/shirt) and smart jacket can often look as smart, even smarter.

Also, there are loads of lovely blouses on eBay/Vinted. I'm a bit obsessed and I think I've bought 8 recently. All between £10-£20.

I search brands I know I like- Mint Velvet, Jigsaw, Hush- so the choice is narrowed down.

I just got a brand new Jigsaw dress for £20. I'm cock a hoop

RappelChoan · 12/09/2026 13:01

I’d go on Vinted and get some patterned Hobbs blouses.

I’d avoid plain as you only need one splash of coffee or bra too snug or whatever else and you then look a bit scruffy.

BugOnARugDrinkingTeaFromAMug · 12/09/2026 19:01

@minnowonthesay that looks perfect, it won't be stuck up my armpits or choking me around he neck!!

I take on board the comment about black trousers, maybe some olive green would be better? Or dark Tan?

What shape is fashionable at theoment?

I love a phase 8 dress, Vinted isn't a bad idea. Will look at mint velvet or hush.

I saw a gorgeous outfit in a jigsaw with a white shirt under a v neck knitted vest and wide leg trousers that matched the vest. It worked really well because they were the same colour group but totally different textures, and it wasn't black. Something to try?

minnowonthesay · 12/09/2026 21:04

Could you wear navy pinstripe wide leg trousers?
I’ve also got this plum (burgundy) blouse from H & M which might work for you

If you’re a size 16 I’m about to list a finery blouse never worn cream and has a long tie bow as shown above 🙂
