Leave in conditioner for children’s dry hair - can you use adult ones?

My 10 yr old daughter has very dry, fine, frizzy blonde hair with a wave - poor kid gets it from me 😂 although mine isn’t as dry as hers or as coarse. I’ve tried Childs Farm etc but it just doesn’t touch the sides.

I’ve been looking at Kerastase leave in treatment, but are adult products ok to use? Does anyone have any really good children’s products they’ve used please?

Thanks x

Of course you can use an adult one.

Not sure there was an ‘of course’ about it but anyway…

Of course you can.
She’s 10! Why are you not just using normal products?
I’ve used adult hair products on my kids since they were babies. Unless it’s a medicated or bleach product I don’t get why you’d think it wasn’t okay.

Wow you are quite highly strung aren’t you! I definitely wouldn’t have used adult products on my children as babies like you have - their skin is far more sensitive than an adults - it still is even at 10.

You are putting it in her hair so no need to worry about her skin. Leave in conditioners can be quite heavy so you definitely don’t want it on the roots.

greengreengrass3 · 02/09/2026 12:17

Of course, I’d just say avoid the roots

I don’t think anyone above was being rude.

Only Curls is amazing! Transformed my daughter’s frizzy hair

Yeah, I’ve been using adult stuff since they stopped being wispy and flyaway at about 2-3. DD uses all sorts now at 8, I just limit heat styling to special occasions and let it air dry mostly.

It does actually make a difference when they are babies and young children as the PH level in theirs is different to adults but by 10 you will be ok

I'd never heard of this before but I just googled it and it seems pH drops to adult levels within days of birth?

I use a fair dollop of normal faith in nature aloe conditioner on my kid's hair (ultra thick, coarse and wavy) and don't wash it out at all. They then like to faff about with my wide tooth styling comb before it air dries.

Prior to this I was washing out the conditioner and then adding some of my curl cream, but this is way quicker for similar results. It just makes their hair less crazily puffy and the comb leaves it with slightly defined clumps.

I was using adult shampoo on my 9yo and he developed some flakiness which Google suggested was because he should still be using children's shampoo. I switched and the flakiness went - I do use normal conditioner but I make sure it doesn't touch his scalp.

I've not used the product you mentioned, but it should be fine on a 10 year old. Are you using products for wavy / curly hair? They tend to be heavier / more nourishing as the hair is more porous. Definitely look for things that are sulfide / sulphate free too. You can also make leave in conditioner yourself if her actual conditioner works well for her hair type. Mix with water and a few drops of a hair oil like argan or jojoba oil.

You can’t stress about using leave in conditioner in a 10 year old’s hair and then call other posters highly strung.
