What could I wear over a Fortuny style dress for a wedding?

I have a Fortuny style dress made by Patricia Lester. It’s sleeveless so I really want something to wear over it.
it’s identical to one one worn by Helena Bonham Carter in Wings of the Dove. It’s made of finely pleated silk. I’d like to wear it to a wedding event and as is the modern trend this seems to involve wearing black tie during the day. It will be too chilly on its own. I think perhaps I’m after some sort of vintage opera coat, but I’m hoping for some ideas.

Vintage Jaeger one on ebay I'll stop now!

On a side note, Fortuny are still around, but I can’t figure out how/where to buy one of their dresses?!

Fortuny do make some gorgeous capes/shawls that would be lovely, but of course they’re not cheap.

I believe the only place to buy their dresses is in their boutique or boutiques - there may be more than one but I’ve only been in the one in Venice. The shawls and some other things are sold on line. Pricey though, as you said.

What a stunning dress! 😍

No jacket suggestions as this is totally beyond my fashion pay grade, but I think it'd look nice with something in dull gold.

@Sunbringer Thanks to all the lovely suggestions on this thread, the idea of an opera coat has gone right out the window. I like your cape idea.

It's a stunning dress OP hope that it has many outings.

OP, will the top layer just be needed to keep you warm during the church service? I imagine that the church will be quite cold in March.

I'm imaging a country church service followed by a reception in a hotel or large house nearby, but may be wrong.

I assume you will take off your coat or shawl once you get to the reception.

It's a lovely dress.

Yes - very Country wedding and not sure how warm it will be. I expect quite cold until the champagne warms me up.

For faux furs, www.helenmoore.co.uk takes some beating. The hats are very warm, so I would think the capes and jackets are too.

For full glam I'd treat myself to a vintage Assuit shawl but would worry about snagging. Maybe mohair as suggested upthread, with a bit of lurex.

Cherrypie0210 · 02/09/2026 16:41

Any of these any good?

I think a cream/ivory jacket would look great either plain or embellished.

My first thought was a cream single breasted blazer jacket that is well cut and fitted with a nipped in waist. It could then be worn open. I think the structure would look great with the softer bohemian vibe of the dress.

Something like this, or with actual black feathers.

That's very nice!

Floisme · 02/09/2026 17:40

If it passes the 'warm enough' test, I really like that feathery bolero / shrug. It's striking but I don't think it would drown the dress. I've still not got my head round the colour of the dress though - how well would black work with it? (One of the very few Trinny and Susannah rules I still have time for is that black doesn't go with everything.)

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 02/09/2026 17:43

Fur jacket! Have a shawl for inside if it’s cold. You can get great embroidered ones.

Itsnouse · 02/09/2026 17:56

I think black works with it very well. I’m loving all these fabulous suggestions from the tailored jackets to the furs and feathers. Maybe I’ll have to get two and change it up during the day 🤔 😂I think once the evening wear collections come out in October/November there will be plenty of choice.

Here’s the dress in daylight. And with olive and teal for colour comparison. Teal suggested by @Redrosesposies and they are Venetian slippers!

It’s so beautiful OP. It suits your shape very well too.

In the 80s I bought a large rust coloured silk velvet shawl from Georgina van Etzdorf which I still have, but I think the company has gone. You might find one on a vintage site. They are astonishingly warm to wear.

I was thinking this too. She made such beautiful shawls.
