Winter coat

On the look out for a winter coat. Im 61, 5 ft 2 and a size 16 so would need something petit preferably. My idea is a belted wool coat, 3/4 length. Something I can wear to a night out but also with jeans and boots. I’ve tried to look already, with not much choice. Budget is around £150. TIA.

You're unlikely to get pure wool in your price range unless you buy second hand.
For new coats, either wait until winter stock has arrived or grab the last of the sale bargains.

From squinting at the close-ups, it seems to be boiled wool (has a felted texture) but that does make it warm & durable.

By 3/4 length, do you mean hip length as that's what I thought you meant initially - or do you mean midi? Either is fine with jeans & boots, but if you wear dresses/skirts I'd go for a length that is a bit longer than them.

Do you have a colour in mind? And by belted, is a wrap belt ok or do you want a belt with a buckle & eyelets? Proper 3/4 length coats often have a half-belt at the back rather than a belt all the way around the middle.

I am your size, OP - but a lot taller. I have a great double-faced wool wrap coat from Jigsaw - but I prefer it worn loose, as the wrap belt makes me look shorter & wider when it's tied. However, the 3/4 length pea coat that I have is double-breasted with a half-belt at the back - & that has a more elongating effect.

So I would bear in mind exactly what type of belt style you want - if you're sure you definitely want a belted coat - as they don't always suit everyone?

What you’re imagining mostly doesn’t exist, @Mattsmum2 - pure wool coats straight out of the shop and not on sale generally don’t cost £150. (And where they do, the wool may not be terribly good quality.)

The Whistles coat on sale above looks a tremendous bargain.

You could probably get something really excellent in 100% wool pre-owned - if you know what to search for on Vinted.

Vintage shops are brilliant at wool coats. I’ve learned from MN that younger people see them as elitist and impractical so you should be able to take your pick.

(By the way, are you certain you need stick to petite labels? I’m a similar age and height and my current favourite winter wool tweed coat is from a men’s department. I find the weight and proportions deeply satisfying in really cold weather.)

I’d not go for belted. I think a boyfriend style would elongate you. Single row of buttons and not too long. Loads will be in the ships soon/on line.

I’d try charity shops as I have picked up two 100% wool coats for £10 each one of which was a Jaeger 1980s coat!

TK Maxx is worth a look, especially now they have all the Ted Baker stock since they went under.

Ted Baker are so obvious though. Like wearing a logo handbag.

Check out vinted or ebay, there is a lovely black wool wrap coat on there from monsoon unfortunately its not my size, a red one as well.

As you’re petite, I wouldn’t go for a belted coat. I’m 5ft 1in and I think they just emphasise all the wrong things!

Im looking for a chocolate brown wool or wool blend wrap coat, I’ve been looking on Vinted unfortunately most of them are camel colour which I don’t want. I love the TK max one pp linked but I’m a size 8.

Check Joules sales. Some are 40% off at the moment. Otherwise you’re looking at second hand.

Thanks we have a Mango in our town, hopefully they have it in, I’d like to really see it and try on. We have Reiss too but ££££ 😬

@MakemineaGandT I tried both those coats from Tkmaxx, they were dreadful, the brown one especially. It was like a shiny plastic looking material which fitted like a sack, black slightly better.

I did wonder is that why TK had then as they were so awful.

@MissyB1 Wrap coats are wrap coats really! Mango often have the same coat in various colours so even if they don’t have it, in line order is easy.

I have the dark green variant and it's well made.
Failing that Mango is good for stylish wool coats. The only issue is that they're generally around 50% wool and they can crease badly. I dont think they necessarily wear well.
It would also be worth looking on Brand alley or Secret Sales for last year's winter coats.
