First day office wear

First day at council office job. Dont want to spend money if I can get away with what I have at home.

I was thinking of smart casual look: wearing black wide leg jeans with ribbed top and blazer, with white sneakers?

Would that be okay?

Jeans and trainers usually both allowed by local authority dress codes, but IMO wearing both together is a bit too casual even though some of my colleagues wear that. I'd do jeans with another flat shoe, or clean leather trainers with wide legged trousers.

Thanks all

I've never worn loafers, what type would go, leather with or without tassles, swede etc

Thanks 😊

Edited

If you've never worn them I wouldn't go buying a pair you might never wear again. Honestly 99% of the time your outfit sounds perfectly fine for all council staff I've seen (I work in local govt and visit multiple councils), if anything it's much smarter than many wear!

People are only suggesting smartening it up a bit for your very first day when people traditionally try to make a good impression, but you don't have to buy anything new - do you have any just plain tops, black trousers, a decent ish dress you can wear with boots or shoes - basically anything that aren't trainers. Then for day 2 your outfit would be more than fine.

Thanks everyone

Please could you help decide which loafers 😊

oh god not the first ones, they are hideous. Look like school shoes. the second pair are okay, but again I wouldn't go panic buying something you might never wear again. Do you not have any other shoes that aren't trainers?

Yes definitely. I have them in several colours and am considering the burgundy. They are great with a blazer.

Of your loafer options, I have the brown suede version of the penny loafers and theyare lovely. They are YSL dupes and a total bargain. Not keen on the horsebit ones.

It’s casual but not usually jeans. Trainers may be ok but I’d err on side of caution day 1. Dress or trousers and jumper is pretty standard.

Did you ask your new manager what others wear in the office?

I wouldn’t wear trainers straight off, see what others are wearing first

That’s them
For the poster who asked if you could wear them with a blazer - absolutely
