Help - I’ve become resistant to Botox

Has anyone else had this and found an alternative?

Apparently I’m a bit of a unicorn and have had 3 separate doctors scratching their heads. They’ve all read about it but never had anyone that Botox (including various different brands) not work at all.

Have been doing it for 15 years and my body has had enough 😭

I didnt know that was possible!! I looked it up on Gemini and got quite the essay back about what causes it and the reasons. Have a look.

IndieRocknRoll · 23/08/2026 22:09

Does it not work at all or is it the effects don’t last? I know my friend had it wear off really quickly the first time and went back again and it wore off even quicker. She gave up as it was too expensive to go every 6 weeks! Sane happened to her mum. Apparently some people just metabolise it really quickly.
Do you exercise a lot or drink loads of water? I think that can flush it out.

OneTake · 23/08/2026 22:11

How often over the 15 years?

GarlicAnything · 23/08/2026 23:58

Other injectable neurotoxins - according to Google - include Dysport, Xeomin, & Jeuveau. Another one is Daxxify, which is supposed to last much longer.

An alternative approach would be hyaluronic acid injections like Profilho, which some members of this board have had.

I guess you need to find practitioners with expertise in the other substances. Or, after 15 years of facial paralysis, you must be almost wrinkle-free so you could just let your face begin ageing with a delayed start!

SucksToBeYou · 24/08/2026 09:56

I had this. Alluzience is the only one that works for me now.

whatsit84 · 24/08/2026 10:07

It works on me but wears off quickly and the doctor who did it said it’s because I exercise a lot (have not stopped exercising because of this!)- does it not work at all on you?

IHeartFridays · 24/08/2026 10:17

I burn through Botox! I’ve heard taking zinc around the same time as getting topped up can help and reducing caffeine. I also try and not exercise and wash my face really gently to prevent my Botox dispersing when it’s freshly done but I’ve just made my peace with it lasting 3 months on me. I’ve not noticed it getting any worse anyway and I’ve had my done 10 years now.

Rosietru · 24/08/2026 18:06

I’ve had it done 3 times and it’s only lasted 6 weeks each time. Going to try somewhere else next and if it’s the same, give up on it. It’s too expensive to have it done so often.

MildlyAnnoyed · 24/08/2026 18:16

Your practitioner should suggest a 12 month break. You can become resistant which sounds like what’s happening here. It can also have less of an effect if you are taking weight loss medication. As someone else mentioned, don’t take zinc either.

ThatGladTiger · 24/08/2026 20:43

Don’t take zinc or take zinc? Have been taking that!

Been to three very good practitioners and tried all the brands mentioned above. They obviously never believe me at first and explain it as bad doctors doing it properly. Then do it themselves! It has no effect whatsoever Last guy said to wait 5 years!

One of them did recommend the hyraloronic injectables but don’t they do something different?

So close to just getting a Claudia Winkleman style fringe!

Mine used to last quite a while then less and less! Gutted as loved the difference if made, albeit temporary!

Probably 3 times a year. Filler too, though that only ever lasts 6 months so given up on that too as it’s so expensive!

This happened to me but very quickly. I had it for about a year then it simply made no difference - I tried all the different brands.

I didn't realise though that I could try again years later. I assumed the resistance was permanent

Waitingfordoggo · 24/08/2026 21:00

I had it once because my friend had just qualified as a practitioner and offered me a cheap go. It changed my face an imperceptible amount for a few days and then straight back to normal. Friend said I metabolised it quickly because I exercise so much. (I haven’t bothered since, obviously).

Do you think you’ll try again?

I’m sorry this thread title really made me laugh

roxyro · 24/08/2026 21:51

I’ve tried several times over 15 years and it just stops working after a week and tbh the difference it made to my face was so tiny it wasn’t worth the bother.

TheWytch · 24/08/2026 22:01

ThatGladTiger · 24/08/2026 21:34

Probably not.

I don't earn as much now as I did then and as I spend most of the time in the workshop I don't need the level of grooming I once did! Just as well really....

Barely even use make up these days. It's actually very liberating. I'm quite enjoying growing old disgracefully.

I love this!

I’m just not there yet!

Maybe your body is trying to tell you it doesn't like being injected with poison?

Manename · 24/08/2026 22:28

I didn’t know this could happen, have it medically not cosmetic, but good to know there are different types that can be tried.

Additup · 24/08/2026 22:46

This thread has been an education. I've never had botox but I assumed you had it and then it lasted for about a year. I had no idea taking exercise and drinking lots of water made it disappear. So basically it works best on dehydrated lazy people 😂

MoIey67 · 25/08/2026 10:18

I had Botox and it simply didn’t work on me. I went back for a top up and the GP was surprised by my lack of response to it. She said my frown muscles must be very strong!

I don’t exercise but do have an unusual thyroid profile so that might be something to do with it.
