Bags - what’s trending?

What’s trending in bags? And any suggestions in the £300-500 region? I’m starting my last job before retirement and I’m looking for something nice to last for the next couple of years. I don’t need to carry a laptop.

I saw a bowling type bag which looked the right size but I can’t decide if it doesn’t look a bit ridiculous

I wouldn't purchase a trendy bag, because next season it'll be out of style and look passé. Buy a classic style instead that withstand the trendy ones.

LasVegass · 23/08/2026 00:10

I’m not particularly trendy, just thought I’d get a new one as I start a new job and I hope I’ll retire from it. So this would be my last work bag. But I’ve wasted so much time on the Selfridges website and I’m none the wiser. As usual, everything goes: slouchy, structured, totes galore. I might just get a new haircut for that morale boost instead 😀

Just go for classics like Fairfax and Favour

LasVegass · 23/08/2026 01:53

Thank you @Noras some nice bags on there and in the right price range. Also a British brand and I could get a 10% discount! A lot are suede, which I want to avoid, but I saw a couple which could be just right. I need to work out how secure they are. The ones I like don’t seem to have zips, only a flap. Thanks again.

I’m half Italian and I get bags from here - they are 5 minutes from where my family live and the best quality leather.

For what it’s worth, Versace and Armani ( company) buy their leather from this area. I know this as my now deceased cousin was one of the tannery owners until ten or so years ago and his sister had a jacket personally made by Versace in 1982 as a thank you.

I hope to be importing them direct shortly as they are great products.

Or you could pay a few hundred more for the same product with a label.

I have this. I love it; very sturdy and a classic.

@Noras thank you, those are gorgeous. I love them all. Beautiful colours too. I’m tempted by the Margot medium, Allegra or another one. I like that not only the sizes are clearly listed but also the weight, a bug bear of mine, I don’t want to carry more than I need to. I’ve never watched videos of bags before but I did now 😊

@MyManinCaracas thanks for the suggestion. It’s too big for what I need. I kust want something big enough for a kindle and a few items.

I’d go for the DeMellier Stockholm if you want a bowling bag style bag. I don’t think they look ridiculous at all. The midi would probably be the right size for what you want.

They also do a ‘shoulder’ version which is a more traditional shape.

The Midi Stockholm is effortlessly versatile, shaped by a minimal yet considered design.

@user593 I was very impressed with the whole story of DeMellier until I came to the bit about the name and how the “De” is because the founder’s family is descended from knights etc. That put me right off, which I admit is highly hypocritical as if the info wasn’t there I wouldn’t have gone looking for it and I’m sure I’ve spent more money with less thought at other times. But here we are.

In the end I placed an order for an Apatchy bag (seen on a parallel thread) via John Lewis. It delivers to my local Waitrose and I can return it there. Uhmed and Arghed about the Italian bags but 35 euro postage and hassle of similar if I need to return (I didn’t get so far to check returns), I decided to play it safe. I spent £200 in the end and hope it’s nice (though rather safe and boring).

Correction that the bag is delivered home by RM, so that’s annoying.

What is objectionable about being descended from knights? I’m curious as to why this would be relevant to bag purchasing…

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 25/08/2026 07:50

@LasVegass Strathberry. Excellent bags in your price range. DeMellier. Lots of great bags.

I find bowling bags sag! I much prefer a bag with structure. It’s just a classier look.

These bags look fantastic. They have so many pockets, including zips. I have been looking for these kinds of bags for a long time. And a lot of them fall below the import duty limit which is good.

Do they retail in other shops in Italy? I go to Italy most years but probably not to the areas where those shops are. Do they sell them in other stores there?

LasVegass · 25/08/2026 10:30

@eurochick i admit it’s not rational. I was reading around, I liked the whole ethos of sustainability, funding vaccines. Then came across this origin story and it felt incongruous and it was a snap decision.

The Strathberry bags are v nice. I liked one v much but watched the video (honestly, had no idea bag videos existed or can be so mesmerising) and the woman seemed to struggle (v slightly) to fit the handle through the bar to close it. So I thought if she can’t do it in a video with editing, I won’t be able to do it on the bus and so on. So that put me off. But v pretty designs.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 25/08/2026 13:34

I cannot find the video. I think these bags are well reviewed and don’t have issues.
