Gymwear recommendations

I need some new gym wear and I’d love recommendations for suitable clothing. I walk the dog and hike but I’d also like to start going to the gym and attending classes.

I currently wear gymshark leggings and a baggy top, I bought 3-4 of the same black top and leggings a while ago. It’s not the most comfortable outfit, especially in this weather and I’d like to dress for function rather than try desperately to cover up! I’m a size 16/18 and clearly overweight, I’d like to work harder on changing that but I’d also like to feel nice/ be comfortable exercising.

I have tried gymshark shorts and they are quite short and ride up constantly. I have very wide hips so shorts are always an issue. If anyone has a similar shape and can offer suggestions that have worked for you, I would be very very grateful!

Most do my running stuff is either from Lidl or decathlon! And that isn’t just because I’m tight! Decathlon can come up a bit small, but always find them comfy. I’m a 12 (now, but have been a 16/18) but still have wide hips and find the double layer decathlon shorts the best. They have an inner short with stuff that makes them stay still and then over shorts.

My running leggings are mostly Lidl when they have running stuff in. I have vest tops from decathlon which I like as they sort of flow out towards the hips

I didn’t even think to look at decathlon for shorts but all of my winter stuff is from decathlon! They do the best waterproof trousers. Thank you 😊

I wear any old crap in the gym. Mainly very cheap leggings and tik tok teashirts.
They are only going to get sweaty anyway.

I'm very unfashionable in wide legged, v loose, cropped, thin "sweat pant" material with a cotton tee. I'm not sporty and don't need high tech gym clothes. I felt comfortable in this. The only part that really touched me was the elasticated waist.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 09/08/2026 21:11

I do reformer and tend to wear Sweaty Betty leggings with one of those built-in bra vest tops (from M&S or Uniqlo) then with a “sports t-shirt” type thing over which I can whip off if I get too hot - I have a few of those but I really like the M&S “good move” one best.

The SB leggings are very £ but I have Nike and New Balance pairs which cost about the same and like a lot less. (I’m a UK 12 and wear M.)

MiddleAgedDread · 09/08/2026 21:15

Flanci or sturdy by design for shorts and leggings. Sweaty Betty if you ever get a sale deal or on Vinted.
M&S Good Move range is decent too.

Pistachiocake · 09/08/2026 21:31

Sweaty Betty and Tala do nice, comfortable gym wear that lasts and washes well, so worth paying for. Doesn't fall down like cheaper stuff.

WomBat55 · 09/08/2026 21:48

i like Nike dri fit tops - I find them comfortable and sweat wicking. They definitely have plus sizes online (I find sports shops near me seem to stop at size 16).
I have a range of leggings/shorts - my favourites are capri length - my favourites at the moment are Lululemon groove high rise notched crop.

It nearly killed me trying to get sweaty betty leggings on. I came out of the changing rooms and had to admit defeat. Its like trying to get 2 pints into a 1 pint jug.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/08/2026 22:15

Good Move at M&S is very good.

Africa2go · 09/08/2026 22:27

The most flattering leggings are the Powerhold range from Fabletics - not trendy but so good. I have Lululemon and Sweaty Betty leggings too - they're good but expensive - not really worth full price but if you can get a deal, they're very comfortable. There's a "dupe" brand on Amazon called CRZ Yoga - their leggings are good too as are their tops.

hellospring26 · 09/08/2026 22:30

Fabletics. Get the deal and cancel.

I like the next gym vests.

willowstar · 10/08/2026 05:56

I am size 6 and couldn't get on with the gym shark shorts either...tiny and rode up...so it is not size, maybe shape.

I second poster above and mainly wear running shorts and tops from Decathlon. M&S Good move range is well priced. I have a pair of Lululemon leggings which I love. Expensive but have lasted very well.

I have hideous loose skin everywhere so wear sports bra/crop top with a running vest over it.

Octomingo · 10/08/2026 08:39

I only really wear leggings now when it's baltic. Reebok and Nike work for me there.

Tops- anything goes. Primark and asda.

Shorts- I like 2 in 1. For running, it's Nike or Adidas, because I've been chafed on a run and it was not pretty. Gym- anything goes.

Don't skimp on a sports bra. If every girl in the country was given a decent sports bra for PE, I'm convinced fewer girls would give up.

ProfessorGarlick · 10/08/2026 08:44

I have many sweaty Betty leggings, get them on Vinted for much cheaper than buying new (and you can still get NWT ones). I've gone from a size 18-20 to a size 12 over the past 18 months and they have worked well at all sizes for me. Also a fan of the CRZ yoga leggings.
And M&S good move tops.

PearlRuby1 · 10/08/2026 12:56

There are some fab suggestions here so I’m going to try the ones with repeated recommendations. I cannot wear leggings in this heat any more and the T-shirts I have are all quite a thick material. After I wrote this, I had an advertisement for JLuxe so I’ve bought two pairs of shorts from them too.

I think the 2-in1 type shorts will be better, or at least, I hope they are! The riding up and ending up like a thong is not a good look and it’s driving me mad! My waist is so much smaller than my hips so I just don’t think the cycling short type work on my body shape.
