Does mascara need replacing regularly, and are single-use options available?

I dont wear make up very often- maybe once a month at most- and mascara now seems to irritate my eyes. Is this because it should be changed regularly. Is there such a thing as one use mascara, I wouldn’t mind paying a bit more if it solved the problem.

Clinique is good for this. Don’t use waterproof. Ditch after 3 months.

I look out for those offers where you buy two things and get a free bag of minis- it almost always includes a mini mascara. Obviously this only helps if there are two things you would actually use.

A few brands do mini mascara- VB, Charlotte Tilbury, but I'm not sure they're much cheaper than the regular size.

I use mine for months and month until it runs out.

i buy mine in the pound shop. along with eyeliner. it’s fine. the rest of my makeup is a bit dearer (laura geller etc) but the cheapo mascara seems just as good to my untrained eye.

I’m going to start buying travel sizes of mascara and throwing them away after 6 months or so. I wear lots of make up but I don’t think I’ve ever finished a proper mascara in 6 months. I’ve noticed you can often buy tester travel packs of a couple of mascaras from places like Benefit; that suits if you aren’t super particular about which one you use.

I use a mascara up about every three months so no issue. I wear most days of the week. After years of Dior this tubing mascara is my new favourite.

Buy a packet of spoolies and use those, rather than applying with the oneit comes with . Never double-dip. So to speak .

I’m pretty fast and loose about dates on both food and makeup, but I actually do chuck mascara after three months. It’s the only thing I’m funny about, possibly because I’m a contact lens wearer. I use an ELF one which is about £8, and I stick a little label on it with the date I opened it so I know when to bin it.

(I have other products that are pre pandemic, I’m not some weird germ phobic person about the rest of it!)

CatVester · 08/08/2026 22:46

I just use mascara until it runs out, maybe every 8 or 10 months. Never had a problem. If your mascara is irritating your eyes it's much more likely that you are allergic to it. Try a different mascara. My current fave is the Elf tubing mascara. I have v sensitive eyes and skin and it hasn't caused me any problems.

I tend to use mine till it doesn’t go on well as it starts to dry up. Don’t use it every day, probably lasts about 4-5 months

Contrarymary30 · 10/08/2026 08:51

I use trial sizes of a good quality mascara ie lancome at the moment. I get them from Ebay. They last around 3 months

ExtremeDecluttering · 10/08/2026 08:57

I chuck mine every few months, they do dry up, I wear a bit most days but only one coat so it hasn't usually run out. I do think cheap ones can be just as good as premium. I don't like tubing ones myself but they are better at not smudging and therefore not getting on your skin.
